It's weird and unique your bound to find something unusual
I love this museum. Very interesting displays of art and informational. Gift shop has nice selection of fun items. The display outside the bathroom entrance is highly appropriate... You must visit the museum to so for yourself!
Absolutely amazing and fantastic and still need to go back and finish seeing the rest
Voted on of the top 10 museums in the world by Conde Naste! Love this place!
A must visit - def one of the most unique museums ever - Baltimore is lucky to have that place as a remarkable collection of innovation. Check out the gift shop as well, you won't want to leave!
Love this place. Went during the parentng excibit. Not only is the art beautiful, they feature many local artist and the parenting quotes were hilarious. Gift shop is the most reasonably priced gift shop ever and chock full of interesting things
The essence of quirky, fun Baltimore is embodied in AVAM. What a fun, thought-provoking place it is. I totally disagree with the previous reviewer that it isn't worth the price of admission. It's all a matter of having the right attitude, Hon.
Inspiring And unique. High quality of expression and motivation.
Show changes with enough regularity that membership is a great deal.
Not worth it.
There are better museums, with better staff. Some of the pieces were decent and/or skilled. But overall it was like walking through an elementary school "art" exhibit.
I think the front desk girl was either hungover or still drunk.
I absolutely love this place and don't see how people live in this city and don't support the local culture.
Very cool and kitschy art museum. Exhibits highlight uniquely Baltimore art and artists.
To see how much people without art training could do really inspired me to start trying for myself
Great artwork in my favorite place the inner harbor, awesome place to have events Weddings, proms, listening parties,etc..
So cool! I spent all day here, and it still wasn't enough time. This is a MUST for a Baltimore trip! There are art exhibits that you will never see elsewhere. If you appreciate outsider art, you will have a smile on your face the entire time; I promise.
A beautiful museum and collection of various works. Lots of different things to interact with. Fun and entertaining much to explore. The staff are friendly and get along with kids well. ! I recommend everyone to visit here once in their life!
I love this place - so many cool things - not a typical museum. A must visit when in Baltimore.
Unbelievable experience so much fun. Will def return.
I love AVAM. They are not as kid friendly as you would think, so prepare to practice look don't touch.
Very cool primative folk visionary collection, small intimate museum, not far from inner harbor
Mind blowing. It is worth reading and getting to know each artist's story. Will go again soon.
Went on a feild trip with my camp. We did a crazy fun workshop activity and then went on a brief tour. The ppl there were very friendly with our kids and informative and also didnt bore them. The the fart button was the kids highlight lol.
Amazing exhibits! Sadly, the flatulence machine in the basement was not working that day. Very eclectic museum store.
The atmosphere is amazing! I enjoyed myself very much. You will have to pay for street parking if you want to be near the museum. Great place to bring the family and friends. They have a store inside that sells all kinds of wacky things.
Been here several times. Talented artists. Some suffered quite a bit from mental illnesses.
Fun unique pieces. Always something fun to see at every corner
One of the few museums in Baltimore that's free but more than worth it
This place is amazing! Definitely will take your breath away!
It was a field trip of 7 year olds...totally not appropriate.
Our favorite art museum in Baltimore. Expensive but worth it. Free on MLK Day.
This museum is wonderful for young and old alike. It is colorful, mechanical, and urban. So much to see there.
You don t need to love art to enjoy this attraction. Priced way better than Ripleys believe it or not, the family will enjoy. Military friendly.
Great Museum, not that many exhibits but still very worth it
AMAZING! I could have spent all day in this museum and STILL wanted to come back again. The displays are so thought provoking and well put together. We'll be back again soon!
Awesome museum. Must visit in Baltimore. Tons of activities. Sensory overload. Has a great shop & restaurant too
Modern art, which I'm not fond of, and by people without former education in arts, so expect anything.
We were at the "Secret Life of Earth" opening exhibition tonight. The event was over sold. The galleries were so crowded and hot that you could't walk, let alone enjoy the art. What could have been a fun classy event was turned into a sh**t show because twice as many tickets were sold as should of been. There was a party next door to the exhibition with a huge line that was almost completely empty an hour later (likely due to bad music and lighting). Then to cap off the night, as we are leaving the exhibition I am told by staff that my spill proof water bottle has to go. I am 8 months pregnant, but hey, rules are rules, right?
One of my favorite museums EVER. And the gift shop is a MUST- I could literally complete ALL of my Christmas shopping right there!
Interesting art museum where none of the artists have been classically trained. There are 3 buildings but one is used only for events. The main building has 3 floors of exhibits and is handicap accessible. There's a sculpture garden outside the main building. The 3rd building has a few exhibits but the main building in my opinion is the best. There is also a gift shop in the main building with unique gifts, books, cards, etc. We spent about 2 hours but did not read every detail on the displays. If you live in Baltimore and really enjoy going or bringing guests it may be more cost effective to buy a membership. It was $60 for 4 adults or $100 for a year membership for 4 adults.
I had a profound experience looking at the exhibit by Esther, a Holocaust survivor. The parenting exhibit also moved me greatly.
This was my first time going in the museum. The current expo was very moving emotionally.
Lovers of art, culture and Folklore this is the best place, they will surprise you with their exhibitions. Lovers of art, culture and folklore this is the best place, will surprise with its exhibitions.
This place has amazing works of art all made by self taught artists. It fills three different buildings and takes a while to see it all. It is worth the time and money to see. The gift shop was so much fun, too.
Very stimulating and interesting. Tactile exhibits that make you think and feel about many aspects of life.
Had a great time exploring all that the museum had to offer... which is a lot! Everything was beautiful and unique.
A must see if your in Baltimore. Equal parts outsider art fair, community center, modern art museum and new age collective, the American Visonary Museum is certainly unrivalled in the D.C.-Baltimore region. Steeped in local flavor, but with a more global outlook, it does live up to its name. Parts of the museum feel straight out of Pee Wees playhouse, and it's sprawling three building complex make it feel like your exploring a campus. Exhibitions subject matter is broad and ambitious, and usually not easy to define in anything less than a paragraph and very conceptual. A very instragram friendly museum with plenty of photo ops.The bar-restaurant upstairs has a great happy hour special ($15 unlimited mimosas, bellinins, or bloody marys) and has quite tasty fair. This is not just a cafe but a carefully curated selection, with some vegan options too. Late night outdoor movies provide another entertaining option, and the museum store is a fun pop culture wonderland that will certainly stroke the nostalgia in us all. All in all a unique space and a highlight of any Baltimore trip.
Fun for kids, about an hour or twos worth of stuff for them to see. We really liked the gift shop. Lots of handmade and vintage items.
There's always something new, and the curators know how to tell a story with a collection. There's nowhere quite like AVAM. An amaxing restaurant and unforgettable gift shop complete the experience.
Sort of hard to find your way around, like there isn't a logical path through the exhibits. I thought some of the art is repetitive. The way different artists drew people was the same in a lot of different pieces. I didn't go to the second building because I was tired but anyway. The gift shop is really fun. They have locally made stuff and imported stuff, books, cheap jewelry, eclectic stuff.
Loved the opportunity to support these self taught, creative and excellent exhibits . Great gift shop.
This was different. It wasn't your normal art museum. The collections seemed eclectic and some of the paintings seemed like a 6 year old drew them. We walked around for an hour and then left. Some of it was cool, but most wasn't our style.
I go there almost every time when in Baltimore even if I don't visit inside - the outside is quite entertaining and sometimes it could be even more interesting. Exhibitions are a mix of kitschy and tasteful art. Worth visiting at least once!
AVAM rocks - be it the art, the events, or the space. Gift shop access is free, and they have lots of amusing gifts.
Definitely a unique experience worth visiting if you're in the city. Marvel in the strange and interesting.
museum which is wonderful and thought provoking nevertheless takes a back seat to the delight that is the Visionary Gift Shop. delight as in if you're on this side of the harbor, stop in. one of the greats
This museum is fantastic! I can't recommend it enough. Saw an amazing quilt exhibit about 5 years ago.
We've been coming since the boys were 7 & 8. They are 12&13 now.
The American Visionary Art Museum is a great little museum. When I visited there was an extremely moving exhibit of embroidery by a Holocaust survivor and an interesting and informative exhibit about climate change and environmental degradation. There is a good blend of the visionary/psychedelic, the visionary/scientific, and the visionary/cautionary. Beautiful and enlightening!
One of the most thought provoking museums I've been to.
