My husband and I chose Ad Hoc as our last dining experience in Rome. It did not live up to our expectations (which were high given the reviews).
The restaurant is lovely, and our table was in a nice location. The server presented us with prosecco, a nice start.
Our orders were taken quickly (we did not choose the tasting menu, but a primi piatti and secondi). An unusually long time later, a
server came back to take our wine order (they were out of our choice) so we took a recommendation which was suitable.
My husband's trio of carbonara pasta were tasty but a bit "gunky", maybe they were not hot enough. My ravioli with an asparagus cream sauce had a nice flavor, but a were heavy for house made, compared with others I've eaten in Rome in which the dough was thin and light.
A very long time later, our second courses arrived. We chose dishes with black truffles as recommended. While the shaved truffles were generous, my duck was extremely tough and chewy, as if it had been sitting out of the pan/oven a long time. My husband's beef cheek was tasty but again, the dish seemed a bit leaden. We waited a LONG time for the check (mind you, it was a pretty quiet latish Sunday night and at the few tables around us also seemed to be anxious for their courses/the check).
In conclusion, if you are looking for a "fancy" dining experience with dishes not found at the usual Roman trattorias and restaurants, Ad Hoc fits the bill. We just expected the service and especially the food itself to be better.
