This is a joint, in an old house - it's all in the name, as advertised. Barstools are on screws, to raise or lower yourself, high ceilings with windows set up high in one wall, a loud juke box, multiple double door entries on Bienville and Bourbon, and a bouncer not to be messed with ... and of course there is absinthe, which does provide the warm, almost narcotic buzz that the old literary expats of Paris desired (it is *not* a hallucinogen), but it will cost you: two White Butterflies (I believe that's the name) and a tonic water cost me and my wife $40.00. I did not catch the name of our barkeep, but she was friendly, and she took the time to explain the process of her pour to us. "Rookies" get extremely loud and boisterous, but remember that bouncer?

On bourbon it's hard to find a bar that feels genuine and non touristy, but this place felt original and an easy duck in from the madness on bourbon street. The absinthe drinks are strong and a great way to start your night at 130+ proof. Would definitely return.

Went in the other day, we waited for a while but weren t upset- it was busy, I am also a bartender and have been for years so I get it. Only thing I was a little upset about is when I asked for a regular gin fizz the bartender snapped back at me that there isn t such thing there s only a sloe gin fizz and a Ramos gin fizz I m no master mixologists, but I have been around the block or two and have read many books on bartending and have bartended in multiple different states, a gin fizz is a thing. It s a classic cocktail (along with Ramos gin fizz). Sloe gin fizz obviously is made with gin infused with sloeberrys, wasn t even made popular until the 1960s. Just a little upset about the attitude I was given about it.

Service wa subpar. The bartender appeared to not really want guests. She rolled her eyes when We asked for absinthe drip and instead gave us a pour over not sure we will return or even recommend. I prefer the pirate alley absinthe bar.

The building is non exceptional from both inside and out. It s old and looks like a place that, if anywhere else in the country, you wouldn t want to walk in to. Once you re inside, New Orleans and the history come alive. It s a must stop anytime I m in New Orleans.

I tried the Pernod Absinthe on a recommendation. It's wonderful. Watching the bartender make it is a treat. The anise notes makes the taste quite black licorice heavy but the absinthe is smooth and easy to drink. I might order the Butterfly Classic Absinthe next visit since it's a sweeter, less licorice heavy taste after trying a friend's. Glad I tried the classic Pernod though. Amazing place. I wanted to shake my head at anyone ordering beers or not even trying the absinthe.

After paying $20 for the top shelf absinthe and only 2 drinks my glass was knocked over and broke and my drink went everywhere. The bartender was rude when it happened and before we left when my cousin asked for a glass of water all she did was give him a dirty look. I'm a bartender if I KNOW someone had only 2 drinks out of their drink and it got spilt I would have made them another one.... ESPECIALLY AT $20 a glass!!! I do NOT RECOMMEND THIS BAR!!!

It was interesting watching absinthe made. The cards all over the walls make for a very interesting past time while you're sipping the absinthe. We had an awesome time in New Orleans and this spot in Bourbon was a highlight of our trip.

Old school tavern feel. Absinthe wasn t my thing but wanted to give it a try again. It was exactly as I remembered it but the price tag is a bit high. The place is nice but given the price tag, and my so-so feelings towards absinthe (not to the fault of the bar) I rounded down from 3.5 stars. Cool spot for a drink, especially those that like absinthe, but not for me.

My group of locals came in,not only were they rude to us,they over charged us for drinks and were rude while they did it. 20$ for just 2 drinks that they tried telling me,an experienced bourbon street bartender, that both drinks were an ounce and a half shot...they weren't...rum and coke in a 3inch high plastic cup wouldn't be dark brown,it would be a lot lighter in color! That was just 2 of the drinks that we ordered! Then tried telling me they are the only ones pouring an ounce and a half...not true...but to get rude with 15 of us?! We realized that's why they were empty on Mardi Gras day, rude employees and rip off drinks! I will be telling ALL my tourists not to bother going there unless they like getting taken!

Wow! I didn't think the Old Absinthe House would amount to much but I'm really glad I stopped in. Even though I'm not an absinthe fan the bar tender made the best martini! Julie's bartending performance and work were like no other!! I highly recommend stopping here if you like a great mixed drink and atmosphere.

We stop here every time we are in New Orleans. It is a small bar and the staff are always cheerful. There is a lot of history in the old building and the big fireplace is nice and warm when it gets cold outside.
