This is a great museum with so many interesting and educational information, beautiful organization of everything! Love this place, my kids got a lot of fun!! Only security were really unfriendly at 5:20 by sending people out despite the museum closes at 5:30.

Excellent and huge museum. The Dark Universe show was amazing. We went with small children and that place is too big and with a lot of stairs for them. They enjoyed but get tired very quickly.
Very large museum with a ton to see. Unfortunately several exhibits are very dark making it nearly impossible to read anything, particularly in the Asian cultures section. It is definitely worth checking out.
This museum is truly a work of expert taxidermy and small model making art, fascinating to walk through...as you secretly pretend what it would be like if everything really came to life when the museum closes. The ocean exhibit was my fave.
The one thing that didn t fit--the excessively exorbitant prices on the elementary school-like nasty cafeteria food. Are you trying to preserve the 90s public school lunch experience too?
On cafeteria prices...$4 for a trans fat packed muffin. $26 for a plate of Mac n cheese for a child. Zero healthy choices. People travel from all over to visit this museum with their children and get stuck having to pay those prices? NYC is better than this. Shame on the museum for inflating their mall-ish food court prices like that. Consider planning ahead pack some snacks. Your money is better spent at one of the hundreds of great restaurants nearby.
Terrible and dangerous conditions outside museum on Central Park West between 77 street and 78 street. The crowds to get into the museum are lined up 4-5 deep and the museum staff has only cleared a very narrow path through the snow; people trying to get to the subway entrance at 78 street cannot get through and folks are walking on top of a mound of snow- museum doesn't appear to care about the safety of its visitors or NYC residents. This happened on the morning of March 15, 2017.
My 4 year olds loved walking through the major exhibits, especially the huge whale. I hope to take them again as they get older and can appreciate more of the content.
My wife and I visited while on vacation and were disappointed it wasn t exactly like Night at the Museum. No but for real, it was a solid experience and there were tons of things to see there. Only downside is that it was extremely crowded. Nonetheless we enjoyed the exhibits and learned a lot while walking through. Don t expect it to look as cool as the movie though (:
The planetarium is great, but just walking around the Hayden sphere and getting a sense of the scale of the universe was pretty amazing. You could easily spend all day here and still feel like there is more to see and learn.
We spent 1h in a security line, and 1h more to claim tickets that I bought online. And it s on Tuesday. Very frustrating ticketing system. Better to buy tickets onsite in kiosks if you really want to visit
This is a fun museum to go to on a cold and rainy day. I recommend checking out Nature's Fury: The Science of Natural Disasters. I learned some interesting facts from earthquakes and volcanoes to tornadoes and hurricanes.
I have visited this place many times and I can never get tired of looking at all the exhibitions. Now my three year old is in love with dinosaurs and what a better place than this. He absolutely loved it.
The line was so long. We came from FL to see the museum so my three year old could see the dinosaurs but there was no way he would wait in that line. We did drive the hour and a half to philly and go to the Drexel museum which was great!
Simply put, an American institution. You could spend several days here and not run out of exhibits to wander through. The dioramas are my personal favorite -- they feel torn from another time!
Yes, you can donate what you please, rather than pay $30 like most other museums. But as a result, half of Manhattan will have considered this as well and will ALSO be there on a Sunday afternoon trying to beat the heat. So please, go early and be prepared to stand in several lines for a minimum of an hour before you even GET IN to see anything.
The American Museum of Natural History, is worls famous, it has 45 exhibition halls including favourites like The Rose Center for Earth and Space, the dinosaurs, the Hall of the Universe and the Butterfly Conservatory (on display from October through May). The Museum is often very crowded, but you'll face fewer people if you visit during a weekday in the late winter or spring. Get there by train B or C to 81st Street or the 1 to 79th Street.
Amazing obviously. 3rd and 4th floors are jaw dropping. The dinosaur and extinct mammal collection are truly unbelievable. They now have the worlds largest dinosaur. Did 4 hours there easily.
The perfect nature museum. This place is a must visit for basically everyone. It has everything from dinosaurs artifacts to meteorites. Endless sea of knowledge and discoveries that will blow you away. Come here ready to spend a few hours of walking around and reading the various explanations about each item. An absolutely amazing experience, I would come here again for sure.
Grand and large exhibits. You cannot cover the whole museum in one whole day, there s so much to do and see! Shows and special exhibitions are very good and it s evident that a lot of effort goes into making them. Friendly and helpful staff.
First half of the museum was old and exhibits were unkept. Very dusty and needed a good cleaning. The newer portion, with the dinosaurs and space exhibit were terrific. I m giving one star because the staff were incredibly rude and unhelpful. They treated my family and other guests as if we were a nuisance. From the moment we walked in, we were herded like cattle and greeted with dirty looks. The maintenance people with garbage cans shouted at people to move in a very angry tone. The cafeteria workers were the same. Guest relations did not exist at all. Very sad for myself and children. We had such happy expectations. Never again. Sad.
Before you visit this museum get ready because you will need all day long just to see one part of it. The museum is so huge and so interesting and for sure you will be amazed. Dont miss this opportunity and visit this beautiful museums.
I have lived in New York for about five years now and I ve always wanted to come and visit the Museum of Natural History. I finally visited today And it was everything that I had hoped for!!The only thing that I would suggest is if you are the type of person who just likes to look at the pictures and the statues then you could get through the whole Museum in about three hours, but if you are like me who likes to take time and read then I would suggest you go early because it will take you all day if you really would like to get the whole experience. Another tip is the price for general admission is A suggestive amount. You could pay one dollar to enter and you should not worry about getting nasty looks from the employees because they deal with people paying low amounts on a daily basis. I saw at least five people walk in line who gave a dollar so you could give as much as you like. Overall it s visually outstanding and very informative . I will definitely go back!
I would say it's my favorite museum in NY. There are detailed diagrams and models for people especially the kids to understand our nature history. Including biology, cosmology, geology, etc. Definitely fun and very interactive. You can learn a lot with just a day trip there. The only thing I will suggest is that most of them are permanent exhibitions, but I hope for more variety and some more new knowledge and understanding to be displayed.
Amazing obviously. 3rd and 4th floors are jaw dropping. The dinosaur and extinct mammal collection are truly unbelievable. They now have the worlds largest dinosaur. Did 4 hours there easily.
A really great day out, and you really do need a day to fully appreciate everything here. Awesome exhibits but the food is (as expected) pricey and mediocre.
After 50+ years of visiting, still a remarkably great educational experience for the whole family. The Hayden Planetarium show should never be missed. A great way to spend the entire day with loved ones, even if a bit expensive....
Bring kids is amazing trip to show all the natural and animals habitats. I'll come back and spend more time here. The ticket price is donation. The pictures and all the caracteres are super real like 3D.
Exhibits were informational and interesting but overall we didn't have a great experience. Everything having to do with logistics was terrible. Ticketing (we had city passes) was chaotic, no options for shows (we were supposed to have an option for the movie but they only allowed us to do planetarium), coat check was slow. It took over an hour to even begin our time enjoying the museum. We did enjoy the dinosaurs fossils and all the different animals from different parts of the world.
Just took my out of country family members here and they loved their 1-st time experience(I've been here many times). It's always great to come here and see the exhibits. Why 3 stars? Last year I was here with a group of friends and it started to rain heavily( pouring rain that soaks you in less than 1 min) after it was closed so nobody was coming in or out. All of us along with about 40 other people tried to hide at the entrance's roof outside as we were waiting for the wall-of-rain to pass and the security was attempting to kick us out as "we were a fire hazard blocking the door" I found the security managed this situation horribly with no empathy at all. Fire hazard comment during a pouring rain was just stupid to say the least as well.
This place was my childhood and ultimately put me on the path of my current hobby of paleontology. Awesome collections, all of anthropological, zoological, and paleontological finds. Staff are super friendly and accessible to the public too, I have an ongoing email exchange about my nerdy hobby with a gentleman by the name of Carl Mehling.
When my wife heard that I spent a full day there she was shocked! For me it wasn't enough! This place is awesome, well maintained, well serviced and so satisfying
There are so many exhibits to explore that one day is not enough. I intend to go back.
A must see for the family.
There is something for everyone.
Four floors of amazing art and history.
My family had such a wonderful time.
Food is a bit pricey but this is an experience and it's in Manhattan. But the choices are great. Especially for people with food allergies. There was something for everyone.
Parking right under the museum. You can't beat that.
"Suggested" entry price is $22
Parking was $33 - we stayed 3 hrs ( take the train in for more of an adventure)
Food was $30 bucks (pack a lunch)
Our son loves the giant whale and seeing other little ones like himself enjoying the experience. He also loved the dinosaurs. He roars when I mention them
Well worth it in my opinion. Children 2 and under are free.
You get an additional 15% discount on food if you are a member.
I was a little disappointed with the things they have it there. Their collection is not very interactive and the although is quite large there's not a lot of interesting thing to see.
It's amazing! All the culture you've heard about and it's history. Everything from Asia, Africa, America, Europe, and so much more. It's a must see for everyone visiting Manhattan.
My daughter's class just went to the museum of Natural History for a field trip. It was so poorly organized! I think they must have one day when they have schools come there for 'educational' trips, because it seemed like every school in the city was streaming trough this one area of the museum. They herded the kids through like cattle so quickly without any guidance. It was very chaotic and almost impossible to take in much information. I wanted to contact the museum to talk to somebody about it but this review seems like it is the closest I will get to filing a complaint.
Was pretty neat. Lots of exhibits are just taxidermy or models of things which I didn't love as much. Dinosaur wings and planetarium are pretty cool though. Massive space with a lot to see, something for everyone.
It's a huge museum with exhibits ranging from Animals, Birds, Dinosaurs, Space, Rocks, Ancient people, cultures of various continents, american history etc. It will be very crowded on weekends. Photography is allowed unlike most of the museums. Will take 5-6 hours to cover almost everything.
Overall super cool, but some parts definitely give me mixed feelings. Parts of the museum make it feel like the museum of taxidermy; It's like walking through a zoo, except every animal is stuffed.
However, the dinosaur and prehistoric fossils on the fourth floor and the meteorites on the third(?) floor make it totally worth it. I thought the human history exhibit was interesting, as well as all the halls with artifacts from different cultures.
I'm all for classic golden age styling. But this place is dated. The majority of exhibits are large still-life taxidermy displays. The Pacific Northwest Indians was good. But I was rather disappointed to find a private event had blocked access to the ice age animal skeletons area. "come back in a couple hours" said the clerk at 2pm.
There are 4 floors and each floor has a particular theme. The top floor is where the dinosaur section is. The middle is about mamals and New York City Birds and the ground floor is Asian and South American History. Difficult to cover the whole museum in a day but definitely worth the visit.
I would definitely rate more stars if it was possible. The museum is amazing! All the exhibitions are great and even one week is probably not enough to explore it all! Restrooms were tidy and they offer enough food options. Water fountains are available as well. Its pay what you wish which is great even if they recommend $18 I think.
This museum is a great place to visit. If the amnh is in your agenda for the day or week, be prepared to consume the most of the day. Families with little children utilizing strollers or in need of service ramps may need additional information on getting around the different floors, or the same floors for that matter. Other reviews that I glanced at mentioned the crowd, its true. The museum does have a tendency of being populated with excited viewers from all over the U.S. and world . Set aside time for eating. I never utilized the cafes or food courts, so I will leave that to the food connoisseurs to compliment or critique.
I love this museum!!!!! The staff are really helpful! The food at the food court is affordable. Most of the restrooms are clean!! The planetarium is amazing!!! I love it all!
Just get out of there and I won't go back until they make some changes (old presentation and videos, closed parts, not kid friendly, hard to go around, etc). I was expecting way more with the good reviews but I am very disappointed specially that I love those museum (I'm a fan of the ones of San Francisco and London).
Nice, I like that you can pay your own price. It's a huge museum, can easily spend the entire day there. Bring snacks for the family. Come early as it can get really crowded.
The best museum in NYC by far. Great for dates, playdates, and a rainy day or just any day at all. I have been going there since I was a kid and the Rose Hayden planetarium is amazing as well. I recommend anyone who is visiting NYC to spend some time there
For the positives: The museum has great exhibits. I especially liked the Teddy Roosevelt stuff. We didn't stop for food, but we did get some beverages from the gift shop. I didn't feel gouged like I normally would at other attractions. Overall, the museum is solid and my only criticisms could be easily remedied. A word of advice to visitors in the cold months: Dress in layers, and you're gonna want to take most of those layers off.
If you want to get in and look at EVERYTHING that they have you should really get there about 30 min before it opens just to get in line if there is one like the weekend. The 4th floor is an amazing with all of the dinosaur fossils.
MUST SEE
Tip: Eat before you go as the Cafe's are a bit pricy, or leave and come back for a quick bite outside at the hot dog stand
