The American Museum of Natural History (abbreviated as AMNH), located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City, is one of the largest museums in the world. Located in Theodore Roosevelt Park across the street from Central Park, the museum complex comprises 28 interconnected buildings housing 45 permanent exhibition halls, in addition to a planetarium and a library. The museum collections contain over 33 million specimens of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites, human remains, and human cultural artifacts, of which only a small fraction can be displayed at any given time, and occupies more than 2,000,000 square feet (190,000 m2). The museum has a full-time scientific staff of 225, sponsors over 120 special field expeditions each year, and averages about five million visits annually.

This museum is amazing. It is a temple of knowledge and a shrine of scientific thinking and discovery. This is a place that can inspire curiosity and care for nature and encourage sane thinking... Something we so desperately need, especially in these times.

The AMNH is basically a second home to me. I love it there. It does get crowed, but if you go, you'll know why. The exhibits there are spectacular, especially the temporary ones. The permanent halls are a joy to be in and there is so much to learn. My personal favorites are the Hall of Ocean Life and the Hall of Asian Mammals. And the Hall of Asian Peoples. And basically then entire museum. The museum itself can get pretty cold, especially during the fall, and food isn't what I would say the most affordable, nor is the gift shop. However, that's what occurs in most museums. The IMAX is amazing, and I love the Hayden Planetarium. The tickets are quite cheap considering the experiences you'll have. I recommend getting a membership because it's impossible to visit the AMNH just once. You'll be living there soon :)

Best museum in NYC, especially for anyone with even the most remote interest in science. People of all ages will find something truly wondrous here. The walk through the Hayden sphere--showing the scale of the universe all with reference to the size of the sphere--is a mind-blowing experience. The exhibits with dinosaur and mammal skeletons are well-done, and they are ingeniously laid out in a "tree of life"/evolutionary path. The animal and civilization dioramas may seem generic and not worth a look, but no other museum's dioramas compare to the quality and life-like quality of these. (word of advice..get close, cover one eye (to prevent your eyes from getting binocular clues to the true depth of the room), and you'll actually feel like you are *IN* the nature. The human origins exhibit is fascinating, and every other showcase within the museum is well-curated, modern and thrilling. AMNH routinely presents visiting exhibits that are relevant and stimulating to the curious child within all of us.

Whether you are a long-term resident or just visiting for a weekend, the American Museum of Natural History is not to be missed!

Great museum for all ages. There lots to see displays every where. Staffs are friendly and nice, lead you to the correct way of what you need to go. I suggest bring a light jacket/sweater it get pretty cold inside the museum. If your a student your in luck just flash your school id and pay whatever you want as a donation. Overall great experience in this museum.

We went a few days ago and we loved the experience. If you just want to visit the permanent sections, the pricing for the tickets is up to you, which is great if you are in a tight budget. The museum is huge so you may plan a whole day for your visit or may as well visit the museum several times. We only stayed there for 3 hours so we only had the time to check the Civilization's exhibition and the "Our Senses" exhibition. It seemed to me and my family that the permanent exhibitions we saw weren't very well lit. However, the "Our Senses" special exhibition was outstanding specially for the kids.

I love the MUSEUM i cant wait for March 14th to take my DAUGHTER and my Nephew back to see the new T-REX exhibit. I love the food in the cafeteria its all very good. But its a little costly. and i also love there gift shop.

COVID INFO EXPERIENCE: museum seems to be doing their best. They have health check type stations you have to go through, and they have hand sanitizer everywhere. Masks are required, and the floor has directions to follow. They are also keeping the occupancy down, which is nice because it's a lot less crowded than it probably would be normally.

The BAD: not everyone kept their masks on once they got in. People were NOT staying 6ft apart, masks or not, and some people were not following the directions guides. These are not problems that are unique to here, but they did not seem to be trying to enforce all of this as best as they might have. Less people or not, it doesn't matter so much when a group of 4 (kids included) are walking the wrong way against the flow with no masks on.

In terms of the museum: it was fun. The main problems are there are only 2 special exhibits (one about the T-REX, and another about the "Nature of Color") neither of which I saw; some other sections are closed (Meteor, Gems, part of space) which was a bummer. Not sure if this is a result of COVID messing up schedules, or if it's what they would have planned for end of summer/early September, just wanted to put it all out there.

Overall it seems they're doing what they can, but I'd like them to be stricter about enforcement of their rules, and although not everything is open, it was still nice, especially because there were less people than there normally would be.

4 outta 5 because of the sections being closed, and the lack of special exhibits right.

Great museum; you can see multiple places and times in one site.. My wife and children liked it so much.. It's huge and needs more than one day to see all.. The app. is very helpful; you have to use the layers icon; a layer for each floor and in each floor you can choose what you want to visit and it will lead you.. You can find hand sanitizers everywhere.. Sure we'll go there again.

This museum is amazing. They have so much to see and do. The exhibits are so great we go there just to see them. The reason why I give 3 stars is because the staff is HORRIBLE, rude and disrespectful. We have a membership here-we visit about 5 times a month- and every time I have run across a rude staff member. Whether it be the security guards or the stroller staff. I m unsure we will renue our membership because of it.

Excellent museum with tons to do foot a whole day visit. This last time I went we did both an IMAX and the planetarium and both shows were excellent. The museum is a no brainer for kids, but all the adults in my group had smiles on their faces.

Disgusting money trap. Was told by an employee I couldn't leave and re-enter so was forced to pay for the completely overpriced and less than one step away from a healthcode violation style GARBAGE in the cafeteria and 46 dollars just for parking in their parking area. Honestly, not worth it. Staff is rude and would prefer not to be bothered with any questions. All in all, experience was worth never going again. Wish the Hayden planetarium could be independant of this money trap because it was the best part and the only part worth the money.

My family and I visited AMNH a couple days ago and it has cleaned up immensely from the last visit almost 7 years ago. However, as a Creationist there are no exhibits in a public museum that take this heavily researched field of perspective into consideration. In the huge spaces that are filled with everything from Plankton to Meteors, there could be a corner dedicated to these well researched and documented fields of Creationism.

First time back since the closures. Only encountered two families with horribly misbehaving children who they watched try to destroy the place, including a little boy with two toy cars rolling them all over displays, including glass in The Nature of Color. They did nothing to stop him. Most followed rules and followed arrows for safety flow. I said 'MOST.'

Got trying at times, with the obvious tourist, who for so reason, insist on getting in the way, not following flow and being pushy. Yeah, not looking forward to their return to the City.

A lot was still closed. Interactive displays and Discovery Room were closed, due to safety. Was a nice walk around, and good crowd control. Only a few non-compliant, but we're quickly put into place by staff. I think I'll renew membership next year. Probably won't return till Fall. I used to visit almost daily.

One of my favorite museums in New York City. I was lucky enough to go before coronavirus pandemic started. Therefore, I was able to see most of the exhibits. The crowd was very heavy.

I suggest to start from the top and make your way to to bottom floors one by one. There is plenty to see and many fascinating stuff across the exhibit halls. There are over 40 exhibits halls so you can imagine how long would it take to conclude the museum. You get to see animals , plants , minerals , stones, rocks, skeletons, etc...

Do not miss the mammal hall, the giant whale and the Dinosaur skeletons halls. I d love to go again when the crowd is much thinner. Once you are done and got enough energy, you could make your way to Central Park and relax for a little bit.

Great museum. Use one of the side entrances if you are coming. We went in the north entrance with a tiny line after seeing massive ones at the front. Great museum, so many really interesting things to see. Some of the displays though are aging and not kept up, they have lights out and some wings had incomplete exhibits. But what was there was nice. We did the all inclusive ticket price to get 4 special shows and general admission. The shows were all great but it was hard to time it to see the rest of the museum. You need at least 4 hours here.

Wonderful museum, could easily spend a good couple of hours here. Like other museums they are doing timed entry with limited capacity due to covid. Staff at ticket counter was the worst interaction I ve ever had at a museum, she was clearly new and confused and no one really helped her which ended up wasting my time

Make a reservation!! Otherwise, you ll end up waiting outside in the cold! Great place to walk around. Time flew by. We were there for 3 hours. Felt like one hour. Time flies when you re having fun

I do not recommend this museum. It is overpriced for what you get. The exhibits do not look real and are outdated and old looking. There are no interactive exhibits like I have seen in other large museums. The atmosphere is dead and dark. The staff was also unfriendly. Go to smithsonian museum of natural history in DC 100 times before you go there. (It is free of charge).

If you're interested in art, than do not overlook the collections of beautiful artifacts from various world cultures. The museum has a HUGE issue though with upkeep and staffing. Many of the exhibits, especially less popular ones, are in disrepair, with paint peeling and dust gathering. Some of the info plaques have letters peeling off. One case had a big drop of brown water that had dripped onto the display backing. It would be so easy for them to fix this and im honestly shocked that they let it get this way.
There is also a serious lack of staff within the galleries, and visitors are going full Mad Max the whole time; kids running and smearing their little greasy fingies on the glass was my most common gripe. There aren't enough places to sit and the layout is bad. 4 stars because the treasure in there speaks for itself, but get there early, line up, and pay $5-10, not $23; that said, looks like they could use the money.
Also, final thought: the toilets were disgusting.

This museum is definitely one of the most interesting places I have ever visited. There is something to enjoy for every family member. You could basically spend the whole day there and for sure it would not get boring. Should you visit NYC soon please go & visit this attraction and you could even learn something ;)

AMAZING place.

AMAZING place.
We were really impressed by the amount of exhibitions and the huge variety of subjects museum's exhibitions cover. We went with the standard pass, that includes "only" the regular exhibitions. Needless to say that it was well above and beyond enough, so that we didn't even has enough time to spend sufficient time at every one. Can't imagine how much time the visit would require if one wanted to also visit special shows and exhibitions.
If you want to have enough time to see everything, I would recommend to allocate a full day to this visit.
Another excellent point - regular admission is a RECOMMENDATION only, visitors can pay as much as they want/can if they only wanted to see the regular exhibitions. That allows EVERYONE to get access to this welth of knowledge and information.

arrive early... you might feel day was not enough to see this huge museum... ;)

its sooooooooooooooo big that one day was not enough for me to see all the things.
and if you read out what's written on each display, you ll never make it.

it is one of the largest museums in the world. it has plants, humans, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites, and human cultural artefacts.
it has Hall of Asian Mammals from India, Nepal, Burma, and Malaysia.
Hall of North American Forests/Hall of Ocean Life where you can see big blue whale
Hall of African Peoples/ Mexico and Central America

Rose Center for Earth and Space housed in a glass cube containing the spherical Space Theater,
The best part was Fossils on display, where we can see all the dinosaurs and its types like Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, and a Stegosaurus.

this is a great museum, I will definitely come back when I visit new York again,
I loved the displays which are perfect and so well made
as a visitor you can really well imagine the animals living in the wild
the other expos are also really well made and thought out
the origami Christmas tree is lovely! I love the concept and looking at it gives you the perfect Christmas spirit

If you want to spend your day bumping into a plethora of civilians, some of which had a personality you would find in the pits of hell, then this is the place for you! After spending 8 splendid hours in this massive building with displays that one could easily find at their own state museum I just might get completely inebriated. Don t assume you will find displays portrayed in the movie Night at the Museum, much to the dismay of your children who don t comprehend how old that movie truly is; though, you will find dum dum and various screaming children saying that phrase to that damn Easter Island clay or whatever composite material that sculpture is made from. I had, however, to give this 2 stars primarily because Neil Degrasse Tyson s amazing voice and knowledge was at the forefront of the Dark Universe planetarium show I attended...oh with that don t spend the extra money for the Senses exhibit or the Ocean journey thing unless your children are under 10, totally not worth it. Ok, longest review I ve ever done and am now almost drunk so I will say peace out, check it off my bucket list and wish I never put it there!!

Nice museum, but very poorly signed, and it is very difficult to find the different displays, despite the provided map. To make it worse, floor representatives cannot help with directions.

Adult experience, we enjoyed our day. Saturday March 17, 2018. Best deal is the all in for $33 each and you can visit all the special exhibitions, plus giant screen and space show. When you arrive if you don t have your tickets go to the left to the kiosk. Your bags will be checked, we did get in with a water bottle and they have fill up stations along the way. For $2 each you can check your coat, very nice that we did not have to carry those around. On the lower level they have a food court, $6 for a piece of pizza, but if you are hungry it works. You can go in and out with your ticket, so you could hit the outside vendors for lunch. Take your time and spend the day. If you don t get your showtimes entered and have unlimited pass for the day, go to customer service and they can add those on for you. For example we forgot to enter the space show. They did it for us without effort. Great customer service and very attentive.

Hands down the best muesuem I've been to in the world. I spent the whole day here and could have spent much longer. It's got it all: space, evolution, dinosaurs, human history... The price you pay to enter is up to you, they have a 'recommended' ticket price but how much you pay is completely your choice

As a first timer to The Big Apple, I made this a must go destination. Perhaps the biggest museum I ve ever been to, it houses over thousands of amazing artifacts and figures that will fascinate even the youngest minds around.

This was a great experience. They did a great job to make you feel safe. I was a bit bummed that not everything was opened but that s ok, there was enough to see anyways. It was great to go and not be over run with people. I could take my time and look at everything and not feel rushed. When you have time you really do notice a lot. My only suggestion would be to maybe sell water, that would have been helpful.

The AMNH is truly one of a kind. I still vividly remember my jaw dropping open the first time I walked into the Roosevelt Rotunda as a child and stared up at the barosaurus. That feeling never quite leaves you. All these years later, I'm a member. This place is awe-inspiring regardless of your age.
