One of the best contemporary art museums in the country. Large and impressive permanent collection that is rotated consistently along with shorter run exhibits in galleries of all sizes. A must visit.

Museum offers outdoor free exposition and indoor pay exposition, both are interesting, outdoor has exculptures and beauty gardens with spots to rest. Indoor has a lot of art to see and to connect to. Also there is a roof mini golf to spend fun time. At the main entrance there is a nice restaurant .

The entrance ticket was so expensive that I refused to enter. I cannot imagine how a humble family of 4 or 5 can ever get to see art at these prices! The donnors can pay regular taxes instead of donating to their pet projects and the city or state or federal government can run the museum and make it free or low paying entrance all the time, not just a couple evenings.
I want art for everyone all days at all times!

Great place to see modern and classical art! The building itself is also a work of art, inside and out. We can't wait to check it out again in the winter when outdoor activities are less of an option.

I have an associate membership here and if you really have an interest in contemporary art I'd gently suggest you become an associate. It opens up a lot of opportunities for you to delve deeper into the experience of the Walker.

There is so much in the Walker collection it's difficult to find a place to start. Currently they have a wonderful exhibition of womxn artists including those that express themselves as Fluxus artists. Their permanent collection is diverse and expansive. I'd advise taking several days to wander the galleries in order to really absorb the ideas presented.

The Walker Art Center has been a STAPLE in Minneapolis and my Life for the past 29 years.

Annual Attendances to the BRITISH ARROW AWARDS, Frequent trips to the World Renowned Sculpture Garden, and most recently a Unique and Inspirational Performance On Hesitation and the interactions of Time and Space written by Allan Watts, and Directed by Garcia Torres.

The Walker is a PLACE of Culture, experience, and a QUALITY attention to detail unseen in many establishments.

Am Grateful for the continued operations by the Walker Art Center, and always enjoy their wide variety of shows, speakers, and culture displays!

Even though it was a POLAR VORTEX and -10 degrees in Minnesota, the Walker continued to be a Sanctuary of Peace and Presence that can be lost in the modern Hustle and Bustle!

Highly Recommend if you can Slow your Breath, Feel the Energy, and Channel your Inner Curiosity!

This is based solely on the FREE sculpture gardens. There have been some changes to the gardens. The green housed has been turned into a pavilion & some new sculptures have been added. There is also a miniature golf area next to the gardens. Overall this is a great place to spend an afternoon or evening with a friend or a group of people.

sculpture garden is great in nice weather. Visit on a weekend or before rush hour traffic on a weekday. The sound of cars can be distracting. Good food options in walking distance.

Sculpture garden is not very kid or stroller friendly. The museum itself is expensive, especially compared to alternatives in the area.

My husband did the whole museum in less than an hour. I did two floors in two hours. The difference was I did a tour with a docent. The exhibit by a Persian sculptor would have made no sense to me but with a docent who had a deep understanding of this sculptor brought this artist alive. Modern art is about the artist and if you do not understand the artist, it is hard to understand the art. By learning about the sculptor and his story, it really brought life to his art. If I had not done the tour, I would have done the art in less than 5 minutes. I did the media floor as well. There were some interesting stories, one about the destruction of the old Walker museum, an exhibit where it was more cerebral and made no sense for those who over thing, It was a good floor. For me I left satisfied but would not come back.

If you go, it is less than photograph. Weeds are big and pieces are smaller than photographs. But having such a space in the city is a great plan and the surrounding cathedrals and buildings are combined to enhance the visual effect.
If you go to this city, I recommend you to visit.

To be honest? I had an interesting experience at the Walker. Some things I saw were pretty astonishing. Others were baffling. While some exhibits have vast arrays of visual art (painting, sculpture, modeling, etc.), be prepared for a lot of other mediums that are underrepresented in other artistic forums. A lot of multimedia art, videos, interactive sounds and displays, etc. The building is beautiful, and the facilities are great.

My main digs are:

1. The in-exhibit staff all seem so brooding that they're hard to approach. I'm not joking, and this is the last thing you want in a place that's already attempting to confuse you, because art.

2. The walker has a reputation for being pretentious, and having now been there I don't think that reputation is inaccurate. The gift shop with it's smarmy puzzle-not-puzzles. The gallery of canvases that only had the description of someone else's paintings written on them. A lot of it comes off as a resentment for the audience, and for other forms of art.

3. There's this "Thanks for coming, but you don't understand this." obscurantism that pervades a lot of it. Modern/contemporary art seems like it's attempting to be undefinable, only to find itself perpetually defined only by inscrutability, lest it be held to criticism.

There's this unspoken compulsion when you go to see art to say "all of this matters." But a lot of contemporary art feels very antagonizing because its often intentionally impenetrable. It feels like it's being made specifically for the viewer to question its value, and then resents the viewer for even asking the question.

"Of course it has value, you just don't understand."

It's effectively saying no one but the artist matters. So let's put my name on a toilet, state the art is valuable because it is, and if you question this you're an idiot. And then the self-assured ones become the gatekeepers for an entire generation of art that you're too stupid to understand, and not popularly allowed to question, lest you then be subject to the same criticism modern art is designed to evade.

Some of what I saw? There are some wonderful pieces at the Walker. But there's also a lot of strangeness for the sake of it, which doesn't make anything inherently interesting, impact, meaningful or poignant.

Maybe the point of the art is to force people to write long-winded reviews.

We are having a hard time enjoying the change to the layout since it has removed many of the dividing barriers/structures and is now more of a fully open grass plain. As a normal visitor with kids, the awe of the past design is not there any more.
