We went today as members of the RHS to look at the gardens so I am unable to comment on the hotel service. The gardens were good, we especially liked the water gardens and lakes. My husband loved the large koi carp in the top lake, they came right to the edge to see us as we walked along the bank. We would definitely visit again.

This hotel is a tale of two halves. We booked 2 delux rooms and a junior suite to celebrate a 60th birthday. When we arrived our rooms were not in the main house but in the outhouses in the grounds. The rooms we were given were very run down and tired. In all three rooms there was damaged/broken furniture. The rooms smelt musty and were dusty. In one of the rooms we were in the eaves of the attic which meant you had to duck to get into bed and my husband (who is 6ft) had to crouch to fit in the shower! Given the amount we had spent to stay we complained and quickly the staffed changed our rooms to ones in the main house. These were of a much better standard and what you would expect for a 4 star hotel. We ate in the Oak room restaurant on our first night and were very disappointed. There is a very limited menu with only 8 choices of mains. The portions were small and the mains came out cold. Given the price for the food it was just not up to scratch. The staff were very friendly and helpful, however there seems to be a bit of an issue when it comes to getting orders correct especially at breakfast. We stayed 3 nights and there was always something forgotten or came out wrong. The 'spa' is nothing more that a very tired looking swimming pool and a very old whirlpool which only fits a few people. There are saunas but these are tiny- fit two people at most. There were only 5 loungers so on busy days you struggle for somewhere to sit. The gardens are beautiful, however the hotel itself has areas for improvement

Great place, and lovely large rooms. The room was bit sparse in terms of amenities (no soap for hand basin), or a suitable phone charging spot next to the bed. Staff were lovely and very friendly. The grounds were outstanding, so pretty.

Pampered or ignored? You decide...

On arrival we were booked in hastily and then marched down to the spa area, the porter made sure to stop and show us the outdoor pool which was unavailable (expected due to weather). We were then shown the treatment area and changing rooms. To our horror we were informed one must change into robes and then walk outside to treatment areas?! Not a chance.
We decided to stay clothed in the single digit weather and have our welcome tea by the pool. The pool area was not as expected. The photographer did wonders to promote this tiny, shabby pool in the hotel website. There was limited seating at points throughout the day which was odd on a supposed pamper and relax day. Our tea arrived within ten minutes although another couple waited over an hour for their welcome drinks.
The facial treatments themselves were lovely and I cannot fault the ladies who administered them however more thought should be taken into the locations of the treatment area and distance from the pool area.
We decided to try the pool after another 40 min wait (pool too busy and loud with babies and families) and then try a relaxing swim only to find the water was so cold we could not remain still or even swim slowly. We needed to raise our body temperatures considerably! The 'spa whirlpool' was equally freezing, particularly as you had to leave the pool to turn it on!
We decided to give up on swimming and await lunch. One couple had waited 45 min for their lunch to arrive before complaining. Ours was only 20 mins late thankfully but our drinks arrived after we had eaten. The food was of high quality which was a highlight.
The dinner and tea dishes were left in the pool area for over three hours without being collected. We rarely saw staff and when we did we were questioning where food and drinks were.
At certain points people from outside came walking in an open door (which would not shut) to use the toilets dragging muddy boots through the pool area. (Presumably guests walking around the grounds).

At reception, staff were willing to listen to our complaint but no sincere apologies were given. The bill was farcical as despite giving vouchers on entry to the hotel they had not deducted these correctly from the bill.
I feel sorry for my friend who had this pamper day as a gift, an expensive gift and who took a day off work to feel pampered and relaxed for the first time in over three years. I feel sorry for the couple who were there for a 60th birthday gift who did not enjoy their experience either. I then feel sorry for myself who gave up a day with my children to feel like a woman not a mummy only to feel cold, ignored and disappointed.
Advice for hotel: reduce your prices to reflect the experience; improve your facilities; ask staff to pay attention to guests; heat your pool and try to match the grandeur of the building in the quality of your gifts.

If I could give this place no stars I would. I stayed here for work and have to say the service is horrible...couldn't get into my room until 3PM even though I arrived at 10am exhausted after a flight from the US. The hotel clerks don't understand customer service. In the states this would never fly. The ONLY reason this is a 4 star is because there is not much around. The food (unless your are getting served dinner as part of an event...wedding...business dinner, etc. ) is BEYOND sorry. I was hung up on by room service without even speaking to someone...the served me a desert I didn't ask for since they were out of what I ordered...couldn't get a decent meal to save my life, I could go on and on...I know by the reviews that I'm an outlier. I encourage others to share their negative experience. I WILL NEVER GO HERE AGAIN. It really speaks poorly of this area...that this is considered a 4 star...even though you're paying for the experience to spend the night in an estate...there has to be a better option. I feel sorry for this area that this is the only game in town.

Tylney Hall has become a firm favourite place to visit. It is located a short drive from where I live, and as such, we use the venue for special occasions, as they have a lovely way of making you feel very special.
I mention of an anniversary or birthday will remind staff to make a little extra effort for that special touch!
If visiting in better weather, a stroll around the gardens is well worth doing, as they are well presented, and very picturesque.
I m not 100% sure if the current situation regarding hire of the facilities, but at the time of writing, bookings are being taken for meals in their lovely restaurant!
If I had one complaint, it s the price of the drinks at Tylney. A large glass of wine will set you back the equivalent cost of a reasonably good bottle from the high street!
Otherwise, the staff, setting and character of this wonderful place more than make up for any of its shortcomings!!
Treat yourself, I guarantee you ll enjoy the experience.

Disappointing service let's down a lovely location. We booked a table in the lounge for meeting up with friends and upon arrival were told they couldn't find our booking. Then after a long conversation they eventually found our booking. Once we had sat down the waiter came to tell us that we had to leave within 2 hrs as they had already booked out our table. We ordered Tea and sandwiches. When our tea was served (and nearly spilt over one of our friends) it was only luke warm with very little milk for the table and they had forgotten to give us teaspoons for sugar etc. Then when our sandwiches arrived they managed to drop two sets of cutlery while laying the table. The sandwiches were very nice although being made in cub format (bread, filling, bread, filling, bread) made eating them difficult. Then we asked to order more drinks and were told we needed to move to the bar which was as it happened full so we decided to pay and leave disappointed.

Overall the number of mistakes was staggering for the price paid and sorely disappointing.

A great disappointment!! Even one star is generous but is given for the setting.

Having visited annually the last few years, normally as a pre Christmas family gathering, we have always had quite an enjoyable experience.

However, today certainly did not meet our expectations at all.
There is a noticeable reduction in the quality of service and food which is a great shame as it means none of us are likely to return.

The service was extremely slow, the staff clearly not attentive nor did they appear to have the experience for this type of setting. They appeared bored, vacant and disinterested and were not well versed in the provision of food and drinks at a Tylney Hall. After being seated , as a matter of course, rather than the warm welcome experienced on previous visits, we were left to wait quite some time.

(Historically, the staff we'd encountered had been friendly, engaging and switched on and there was always a lovely atmosphere!! )

A waitress eventually attended to take our drinks order yet was clueless in terms of a simple enquiry regarding the type of beers served. She then deferred to another staff member which took more time. We then had to re order and all drinks arrived apart from one ( a simple tap water!) which came later.

It wasn't busy at all, with only a small number of tables in use, yet the wait was painfully slow and with the staff being so inattentive they failed to notice the delays in our food being ready. It was clear we were dissatisfied from early on into our visit yet nothing was done to remedy this and no apologies made.

The majority of the table chose from the festive menu and another from the vegan menu. The starters were received well although the vegan soup choice was only satisfactory - a simple tomato and red pepper soup which lacked flavour. The feedback regarding the roast turkey was mediocre. The potatoes overdone and dry. The rest of it so so. Certainly not of a standard one would expect at Tylney Hall, especially for the prices charged.

Ironically, we were then clearly over charged on our bill which was another convoluted process to rectify and took far too long! Again,no apologies made. So so poor! We did not leave a tip as it was clearly not earned.

Even the " music" played was a disaster. The (invisible) piano player was an iPod connected up to a speaker playing some tunes that were out of tune or getting stuck. It all sounded like it was on the way out and was a very distracting nuisance to a few people in the room. The waiter made light of it but it wasn't really acceptable.

All in all a waste of time and money!

Tylney Hall as a building and setting is lovely, but unless management address the obvious deterioration in staffing/ service and food quality then this won't be enough to keep a steady flow of visitors. It's definitely lost the sparkle and fizz that used to be present.

A great shame!!

Lovely historic building and grounds. All staff very attentive and courteous. Breakfast varied, fresh and good quality. Evening meal - service very slow but I believe there was an issue in the kitchen the night we dined. The food however was very tasty and delicious steak.

I am just checking out of the hotel now. Exceptional staff and service they provide is second to none.
I highly recommend eating an evening meal here I had a steak dinner with a passion fruit souffle. It was honestly the best meal I have ever eaten. It is such a shame we are only here for 1 night. :(

Very nice place for a weekend escape. Amazing nature and garden. Huge territory with a old trees. Feel like in a fairy tale. For food you can choose hotel restaurant or visit some local places by taxi. Mesmerizing architecture.

We have been for afternoon tea with friends on a number of occasions. We couldn't wait to get back after lockdown & will be visiting next week. Lovely venue, great service & wonderful food. Good choice of teas. Highly recommended.

This is without a doubt the most picturesque hotel I ve ever stayed in. If that wasn t enough, I am openly staying that the staff of this hotel is the most polite, guests oriented group of people I ve come across. There is one person who s a shining star within that staff, her name is Cecile (hope I spelled that right). She made any of my stays ten times better. Special shout out to the concierge who told me a bit about the castle and showed me around, answering some of my questions. I didn t catch the name sadly. Thanks guys for another lovely stay.

Impressive buildings, gardens and McLaren cars in the car park, but let down by lots of weeds in the flower beds and very poor service of tea and cake. Dirty tea stained table cloth, piles of tea bags, no saucers offered with the tea.

Absolutely stunning grounds and interior. Service in the run up to our visit was also seamless-- I organised a bridal shower here and the team were super accommodating. We easily spent over 2.5 hours there and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon tea. Prices are also very good value for money. Definitely recommend!

Hotel is beautiful.

Hotel is beautiful.
Service is pretty poor. Long waits to be served, unhappy looking staff who don't seem that interested to help or be of use. Dirty plates laying around for ages.

I had a gorgeous time at the hotel.

I had a gorgeous time at the hotel.
The room was spacious and comfortable. We also used the Sauna and Swimming pool. Saunas are segregated so if you come in as a couple you won t be able to enjoy them together. The swimming pool was nice but I just wished it was a bit warmer.
We also booked a one hour body massage for two, again segregated, the hotel doesn t have the facilities to do couples massages.
The decor is absolutely stunning (conservative) and the grounds are well worth a walk.
The down side for me was the breakfast food, we ordered eggs royal and toasts. Both were cold and the bread was hard, just very unexpected for a 4 star hotel.

A beautiful building and grounds, but this hotel is very inconsistent. Staff is friendly but over familiar, rooms are large but without soul, common areas with original features but also cheap furniture. Not good value for money, the redeeming feature is the site.

Absolutely beautiful place- the grounds are stunning.
Friendly staff, every one of them. Just wish I had longer there.
Only downside was tired decor in some places but apparently getting upgraded.

Tired decor + awful room

Tired decor + awful room
Not even a 2 star ....I've been in better hostels ...over priced ..
Food quality let it down ...
No vegetarian or vegan menu
The breakfast cook... needs lessons ...
The building and grounds stunning ...however the decor is tired ..old ...very out dated ..
Needs some money spending on it ...they surely can afford to with the price they charge
Room 22 ..shower awful.. that bad it took me 20 mins to get the shampoo out of my hair...I want going to even entertain. The conditioner...
Not worth the money
