Unfortunately, our experience with Tripix fell short of our expectations. We specifically decided to arrange for a guide because we wanted to do an overnight climb. Having never done such a climb and unsure of the conditions on Pico, a guide seemed like a good idea. We scheduled a date and Tripix included a backup date.
We came to Pico island for 4 nights to give ourselves a few days in case weather conditions weren't great. Sure enough, Tripix cancelled our original hike several days in advance due to a forecast of unstable weather, and we were offered a day climb instead. As forecasts changed, this date was suddenly moved earlier, and then cancelled again. In either case, an overnight climb was never offered. It seems that during the summer, with the influx of tourists, there are many more people doing the day climb and in situations of cancellations, whether due to considerations of profit or availability of guides, overnight climbs simply fall to the side. We were extremely disappointed, as we relied on Tripix to have this experience, especially in case of unfavourable weather conditions (we had spent a good amount of time and money preparing for the possibility of bad weather!) We did not complete the climb with them.
On the positive, Tripix refunded our deposit promptly and without any hassle when we realized they wouldn t be able to provide what we had signed up for. Pico looked beautiful and clear on our backup date, but unfortunately we were not there. We did however climb Pico during the day on our own without any trouble--no guide was necessary in good conditions!
I have little doubt that Tripix can provide an excellent experience on Pico. But you have to be prepared that they may not be willing to climb in potentially imperfect conditions and may not have a ton of flexibility in rescheduling during peak season. We weren t!
