I'd first like to begin with my biggest complaint:...

I'd first like to begin with my biggest complaint: they didn't locate their restaurant here in Rancho Santa Margarita. Had they, not only would we dine at The Ranch Restaurant more often, they would have most certainly received considerably free publicity from visits by the Orange County Housewives... That aside, The Ranch is as close to perfection as an anthropogenic contrivance can get.

Both times I've dined at The Ranch were for anniversary celebrations. One was for close friends, while the other was mine. Both occasions were special and The Ranch exceeded our extraordinarily high expectations. Those who are aware of my finicky nature will readily attest that this is no small feat.

On a quick side note, being a photographer you'd think I would have posted a few images along with my review, as most included in this Yelp page do little justice to the presentation and sizzle. I promise, on my third visit I'll be more vigilant.

That said, one element that does shine through these slapdash snaps is creativity - not the photographers, but the chef. Yes the food is delectable, but I'd be remiss if I did not mention that one of the key ingredients in what makes The Ranch such a phenomenal dining experience is their inventive flair. I'd love nothing more than to wax on about each dish and what made it so exceptional, but then this would evolve into a book rather than a review (which is already getting longwinded).

As to the particulars, there are ample reviews here for that. However, I would like to add that I've had the opportunity to travel and dine the world's finest restaurants; The Ranch assuredly rates among them. And to think The Ranch is right here in Orange County - in our own backyard! Procrastinating to make a reservation might be considered some sort of gustatory neglect.

We have had the pleasure of experiencing the wonderfulness of The Ranch since it opened. It's always fun to watch the owner move from table to table checking to see if everything is okay. There have been many instances when our table was not graced with a visit from the owner. Andrew Edwards stopped by our table on our first visit. We have been loyal customers since them. Tonight's experience was one of the most relaxing dining experiences since Marcy 2020. We felt safe and welcome. The food is amazing. The staff is phenomenal. The restaurant has done everything to ensure that we are in a safe environment.

Totally wowed! We had a neighborhood night out, with seven couples. From the moment I made the reservation the staff exceeded our expectations! Catering to a party our size always comes with hiccups, but last night was seamless and absolutely amazing! Every wish was our command from splitting salads to splitting checks! Absolutely awesome experience!

My wife and I have been to the Ranch a number of times and we haven t been disappointed. The service is always top notch and the food is absolutely worth the price. This most recent visit was for my wife s birthday and we had the seasonal mule (recommended!), the BBQ Bacon Manhattan (Jack Daniels, cherry, and bacon, personally prefer a standard Manhattan), Foie Gras (amazing!), lobster mac and cheese (recommended: crispy, gooey, and slight lobster taste), New York Strip (solid piece of meat, well-seasoned and well prepared) and the Chilean Sea Bass (a surprisingly delicious dish, wish there was even more shrimp risotto!). Finished the meal with the popcorn ice cream which tasted close to a butterscotch way too sweet for my wife but interesting in my opinion (would recommend trying a more standard dessert). Can t wait to visit again. They also host some cool wine events, and the wine + whiskey selection is pretty extensive.

There was nothing really that was exciting about this restaurant, except the price tag. The service was ok ... nothing exceptional. Our waiter seemed almost bored and I had to ask for the specials, he was not outgoing at all. He did pay attention to details but was not really sociable. The food was okay. The BBQ beef ribs were not worth a second try. Very earthy tasty not much flavor. The beef was very tender but there was no flavor (we are from the south though, so we are quite spoiled when it comes to BBQ) The lobster mac and cheese was clumpy and had flavor but nothing compared to other restaurants that provide you with actual lobster in the mac and cheese and lots of creamy sauce. The spinach asparagus was hardly edible and the cream corn was not creamy or tasty at all :( It is the first time that I have ever seen my friend not eat ALL of the cream corn! The beet salad and the onion soup were superb! The best part of the meal and the Sea Bass was exceptional and loaded with nice soft complimentary flavors. With all of the other amazing restaurants in town, this is not one that I would return to.

The Ranch is a very nice place. The food is good, our waitress was absolutely fantastic. We had a party of 20 on the saloon side. She was constantly attentive . I was actually shocked how good ahe was. The 4 star rating opposed to a 5 star- it's hard to say. I didn't really like the owner singing on stage. I get it, it's his place- he can do whatever he wants- but to sing about 20 songs was too much. Th he dance lessons were cool, but that lasted a long time. The live entertainment was good, not great, just good. It's a nice place I'm sure I'll go back, everyone was respectful and polite. I liked going here but I didn't love it.

Came here to celebrate a birthday and did not disappoint. We had a mishap and missed our earlier reservation. I was able to grab a real late reservation in the evening. We thought might as well go and grab drinks and sit at the bar. They were so able to accommodate us early.!

We were looking for a restaurant with positive reviews. Last weekend, my friends and I went here because we were food lovers. We tried their various dishes and desserts, and we enjoyed them very much. One of the finest!

Awsome place to have a party
We had our Christmas party there and it was a great time for all. The saloon is separated from the restaurant so your diner experience is not drowned out by the noise of the saloon. When your done, enter the saloon to enjoy line dancing etc.

My father and I visited THE RANCH for the first time about a week ago as we were in town from NorCal for a local convention, and we both can say that it's firmly situated amongst the best culinary experiences we've ever had!! I've been to probably a dozen or so Michelin starred restaurants around the world, and I can say that this place is on par (if not better) than a majority of those. THE RANCH is now on my list of must-visits whenever I visit SoCal - it's THAT good!

TL;DR: THE RANCH is Michelin quality food and service, without the pretentiousness and at a very reasonable price for the quality. I can't recommend this place enough, just go!

FOOD
The food was simply to die for! We had not eaten much throughout the day in anticipation for this meal, and we were not disappointed! To start, we enjoyed 3 appetizers - the Robbins Island Tasmanian Wagyu Beef Carpaccio, the Country Fried Texas Quail, and a Spinach & Pear Salad from the farm menu (I don't recall the precise name of it), preceded by a Salmon Tartare amuse-bouche. The salmon was very fresh and flavorful, with a hint of wasabi (I very much dislike wasabi, but I absolutely loved it in this dish). The Carpaccio was bursting with flavor, and the Quail was probably the most tender fried poultry I've had in a long time (the breading was very flavorful, and the bed of potato salad added a really nice balance to the dish). I didn't have too much of the salad since my dad was enjoying it too much to share!

SERVICE
The service and hospitality were 5 stars throughout the entire meal. We were warmly greeted and seated by Sten (who I assume is one of the managers of the establishment). Our waitress, Tina, was also super friendly and attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. She walked us through the two different menus (the standard menu and the Farm menu) and pointed out the chef's specialties. Our glasses never ran empty (one of my personal barometers for service) - and we were checked on numerous times throughout the meal (without it seeming intrusive).

This was hands down the best restaurant I have ever been to. I loved the staff, the food, the atmosphere. It was so relaxed and beautiful! My steak was perfect (new york strip) and our waiter was attentive and gave wonderful advice. Can't wait to come back! We recommended this to our family members and friends!

Great atmosphere, somewhat loud restaurant, the food is excellent. The filet mignon is better than other higher end steakhouse that starts with F. The salad was excellent. Servers are attentive and careful. Never going to have trouble finding parking.

This place is an excellent find for Orange County. Known for being one of the most romantic dinner settings. I thought it had a very cool vibe! It is a bit pricey, but expected for the place and the quality of food.

This restaurant is one of my favorite in all of orange county when it comes to service, quality, atmosphere and the servers!

last time I visited I tried the lamb chops, lobster mac & cheese, the seasonal calamari, and Milky Way dessert. Every single plate was worth it and was our eyes and my stomach Our server that night was Christine who didn't amazing job and was not it annoying like other servers I have a had at this location. She knew how to read us... When to talk to us and when to give us space.

I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone when I comes to business, dates or showing someone amazing and memorable time

This place gets five stars from me!

I think it has everything that is expected of an ideal American cuisine restaurant. All entrees we ordered- heirloom tomato salad, ceviche, beer carpaccio, foie gras and fried squash- were delicious and their steak was just perfect! Side dishes were all really good too! It is one of my favorites now!!

I heard the owner of THE RANCH is from Texas so I was excited to come dance there being that I am a transplant from Texas and I have been to several of the largest country western bars in San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Amarillo.

I never ever heard of a hiring an over gown security guard to patrol the dance floor to see what people are dancing and making people conform to line dance if others are doing line dance. I mean really! HOW RETARDED IS THAT!!

YOU ARE MAKING YOUR PLACE AND YOUR EMPLOYEES LOOK LIKE COMPLETE A-HOLES!!! SERIOUSLY!!

You kicked my 57 year old friend and I off the dance floor because I was showing her how to do the 2 step. MY LORD, who has ever heard of such a dumb freakn thing. Your damn floor is so freakn big and we seriously we not even in the way because your self-imposed rule that your "meathead" said that " you can't dance any other dance if others are doing the line dance!!

Funny thing is, I heard about this idiotic thinking before I drove from San Juan to Anahiem but I still went!!

You ought to be ashamed to even suggest you know anything about running a country western place much less a call yourself a Texan?!?! REALLY!!

YOU OUGHT TO KNOW THEY DON'T EVEN DO LINE DANCING ALL THAT MUCH IN TEXAS!!

One final thought, think hard about what type of clientele that is dancing two step and what time of clientele is doing line dance. I am sure you would agree that YOUR PAYING CUSTOMERS ARE OVER 40 and have professional careers and your LINE DANCERS are all under 30 barely making a living!!

WAKE UP!!

By the way, the LADY your employee asked to get off the dance floor owns one of the largest real estate business in Laguna Beach!!

Please, Pretty Please with sugar on top, let people freakn dance the way they want to! Act like you own a Texas Honky Tonk for heavens sakes!

It's a freakn dance floor and making people wait sometime 10 minutes to get back on the floor is so so dumb!!

YOU AIN'T NO TEXAN I KNOW!!

Nice restaurant food was probably really good just had to deal with a sick kid and late dinner no fault of the restaurant. Would have been nice if it was just adult night out. Will come back next time will be willing to try out the $115.00 ribeye.

Suggest leaving kids home if you want to enjoy the atmosphere.

I love the food here and the decorations is very upscale . The wait staff is kind and courteous. The food quality here is amazing, especially the steak, of course it's really pricey and it's for really special occasions only. our final tally came out to 375$. Of all the food I ordered the salad was the most disappointing because there was too much sauce and made the salad too wilted. This place is reservation only because it's super packed. The ambiance is quite loud and really took away from the dining experience. I wish we were seated in a quieter locations.

Rob was our server and extremely knowledgeable and easy to talk to. The prime rib was great but the real star of the show was the cowboy ribeye. Beef carpaccio was also a hit, and immediately made our table smell like truffle. Everyone that approached our table last night was welcoming and friendly.

Oct. 9th, 2017. 8pm. Didn't call ahead of time for reservations so my wife and I decided to wing it and walk in. It works and we get seated within 10 minutes. We usually get seated in a booth, but this night we get seated in the open restaurant right past the bar. We get seated next to some suit and two younger ladies that have seemingly had their fill of drinks and are very lively.

What I love about this place is the service is ALWAYS EXCELLENT. Everyone works as a team to get drinks, appetizers, and orders precisely correct. Even the general manager dropped in to see how things were going.

I ordered my drink of choice, Old Fashion Bulleit rye and the wife orders a cabernet. Drinks are superb, albeit on the pricier side. Initially, the intent was to get the Cowboy cut of steak. A 57 oz. cut of juicy meat, wonderful marbled fat and bone. Originally, this cut off steak was $99 and comes with 1 side. This same entree is now $116 with one side. (None to happy about this part). Another option I was told about was a special of the night. A USDA PRIME PORTERHOUSE of the top 2/3 of 1/% of steaks in the USA. I would say about 35-40 oz. PRIME meat. And of course it did not disappoint. Mouth watering USDA PRIME steak sent my taste buds to a divine place. Add a tantalizing lobster mac and cheese and whipped potatoes for a whole entree at $150.

Now, I wish this was an everyday thing, but then I would probably be in the top 2/3 of the 1% of the unhealthiest in the USA and broke. In the end, this was an amazing dinner with my wife and an amazing experience, save for the bill. Nonetheless, this is a steakhouse I will return to again and again and again.

Enjoyed the first visit so much came back for another! Definitely one of the best Steak Houses in Orange County if not the best! On a previous visit I came to enjoy The Cowboy Ribeye ; this time around I selected the 40 oz Aspen Ridge Prime 28 Day Dry-Aged Bone-In New York Delmonico - delicious! I will say I am still partial to The Cowboy for the tenderness!

For a solid opener the Kale Salad was delicious - you won't go wrong with selecting this as shareable appetizer!

Tip: If possible, try to avoid being seated in the bar area for a romantic dinner (unless you prefer) as it is very intrusive as others unintentional having drinks and socializing can be very loud.

Cheers,

I can't say enough positive about this restaurant. All of their staff were very outstanding. Their hospitality and genuinely care to costumer are very laudable and commendable. This is without question one of the best in OC that I have experienced. I have eaten a wide variety of the menu items and they were all prepared excellently and were highly gratifying. The service is amazing too. They really know how to take care of a customer. Dining room atmosphere is very nice. I have not been in the bar side, so I cannot speak about that.

First off I will say this ... STAY AWAY FROM THIS ...

First off I will say this ... STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!
The drinks are watered down and the tap beer does not taste like your called beer.
Here is our experience and why we will never go back!!!!

On their website they say no reservations can be made on line and to call the club for reservations. I called three weeks in advance to reserve tables for a party of 25 family and friends. I was told on the phone we could not make reservations over the phone but if we were to arrive when they first open the doors we could get in right away and grab whatever tables we needed because they work on a first come first served basis. Ok so get there early.. No Problem right? WRONG!
We arrived right when they opened the doors at 5:30 pm and EVERY TABLE WAS RESERVED! You could not find any tables at all. Every table had a reserved sign on it. They had about 9 stools against one wall at one end of the club by the restrooms. Hum!! What is going on here? Why are all these tables reserved and I was told you could not reserve a table.

One of our family members asked for a single table and they said "Let me check and see what I can do for you" as to say like you are some sort of VIP "I will be right back" Then they return saying they found the last table in the club due to a reservation cancelation and you can have it if you open a tab and post $150.00 to a credit card so if you do not reach the minimum they will charge you the whole $150.00. So with 3 stools per table that is a $50.00 minimum per bar stool.

We had set this party up with Invites and carpools for 25 close friends and family members. I then asked to speak to the manager. This is when the story gets good.
He told us that he could set up 9 tables and the cost would be $1500.00. That would be for 27 stools. That would be $55.00 per person. That is just to sit down. If we did not spend the full $1500.00 on food and drinks they would charge whatever we did not spend to the credit card that was on the running tab. Then he proceeded to tell us that they will add a $300.00 tip to the $1500.00 reservation charge at the end of the night and if the tab is higher than the $1500.00... the tip would be adjusted for the amount we spend .
Enough was said. I told the manager I would not spend another penny in this place and we all left.
After speaking to the few of my friends that ordered drinks while I was working with the manager they all informed me that the drinks were really weak as if they put very little alcohol and the beer did not taste like the beer they asked for on tap.

I will say it again short and sweet... If you are looking to sit down and enjoy a night out for dinner and dancing go somewhere else unless you want to spend $150.00 Minimum per table.

Just stay away ... we will!

PS..........

The website says No Cover before 5:30. Well guess what time they open? Yep 5:30 so everyone pays a cover charge!!
Do the math 25 people walked in at $5.00 per person. They made $125.00 for us to walk in and leave after about 30 minutes of trying to get a table.... Thanks The Ranch! You sure know how to treat your customers.

My wife and I went to The Ranch for our 27th wedding anniversary and I was extremely disappointed in the prime rib that I ordered. As always I ordered it medium rare and it came rare. I even asked our beautiful waitress if she put down rare instead of medium rare. She said no and even told me it was really rare. I sent it back and it still wasn't cooked enough. This was our first time there and probably our last. Except for the poor quality on the prime rib, everything else was outstanding. Someone from the kitchen even came out to check but I was done at that point. New cook or just a bad night?

This food experience is not one to miss. I had an heirloom beet salad and lamb chops. The mix of greens and the tangy-sweet flavor of the salad's vinaigrette was delicious. Nicely balanced with the salty roasted Marcona almonds. Lamb chops were tender and not at all gamey. Loved the accompanying bean-pasta melange. Service is knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic. I love visiting The Ranch.

My experience at The Ranch was sort of a mixed bag. On one hand, the place did have the ambiance and cleanliness that I would desire out of a restaurant (and the fashionably high prices can be justified if the food was worth it, which it can be if you've got a good cook.) But the place wasn't too fun for anyone who isn't a "concert cowboy" who likes to have a good time without worry about a litany of rules.

My personal experience was something like this: I went in on a weekend and had to pay a small cover to enter ($5.) I want to peruse the gorgeous dance floor they have, but I'm not a trained line-dancer so I can't step on it (seriously, this would be like going to a concert hall and not being able to go on the floor and instead stand to the side of the stage.) Also, if you're wearing "baggy" clothing, t-shirts with no collar, shorts, bandana, or a backwards hat, you may be either denied entry or asked to leave. I sat down at the bar (which was well stocked and had sports on) and managed to place my dinner order. While my server wasn't rude, he was definitely more interested in cavorting with the other guests (who may have been regulars) as opposed to making me feel welcome for my first trip to The Ranch. The food came and it was good - Had a chicken sandwich that was actually pretty enjoyable. Went outside to get air and that's when the over-zealous bouncer told me that I wasn't allowed to leave if I wanted to go back in. Considering that I paid a cover and had my wrist stamped, I was kinda taken back by this. I then decided to leave, because while the food and ambiance was nice, I simply wasn't able to have any fun there.

This place was excellent. Service was excellent. We had reservations and as we walked in they took us to our table right away. I've had reservations elsewhere and I've always had to wait a few for our table. Like I said service was Our waiter was very attentative. Food was excellent as well. We ordered the baked artichokes as appetizer and also ordered soup and the wedge salad. As for the main course, we had the salmon and petite filet. As for sides the cream corn and beans/mushrooms. As for dessert, the creme brulee. All was delicious and excellent. Presentation of the food was amazing. This restaurant is an excellent place for romantic dinners as well. The lighting puts the mood for romance. Overall this place deserves 5 stars. We will definitely come here again and this time for their steaks!!

My husband surprised me with a nice idea to dine here at The Ranch for our Anniversary. Our reservation was at 8:00, We arrived 5 minutes late, we were sat right away. Once we were sat we were greeted by our server (or so we think) she explained a few things on the menu and then left. We received water, plates, and silverware from one of the gentleman. About 10 minutes later she came and got our drink order. I ordered a lemon drop martini and he ordered a specialty cocktail. 20 minutes has gone by after we ordered just the drinks and still had not received them. I stopped another server to ask if we could place our food order since we hadn t seen our server. He gladly took the order and placed it. Then a few minutes later our drinks came out and were dropped off by someone else. Our actual server came out finally to ask how the drinks were. She also repeated our order to us to confirm the order she received from the other gentleman. She repeated it correctly and knew that the lobster Mac N cheese was supposed to come out with my salad before our meals. The lobster Mac N cheese came out in less than 10 minutes and I had not received my salad. About 20 more minutes go by before she comes by again to check on us. I explained the salad was supposed to come out with my husbands appetizer, which she confirmed earlier. She apologized, However it then took another 10 minutes to receive my salad. My husband had already finished his appetizer at that point. The server had the Audacity to try and make a joke saying, Was the salad worth the wait? Literally unbelievable. We were also wondering why the food wasn t coming out because we had ordered it about an hour prior. We had been at the restaurant for almost a full hour and half before our entrees reached the table. Not to mention that every table around us seemed to be getting great service from other servers. One table that was next to us had received their bread, drinks, and meals within 30 minutes of dining. The server we had tried to explain that because she forgot my salad and they were waiting for me to finish my salad before giving the entrees. Why make my husband wait to eat because she messed up on my order. By that point we were not even hungry anymore because we had been waiting so long. We just asked for the food to go and the bill. I asked to speak to a manager. The General Manager Sten Green came by to drop off our food and once again we just asked for the bill and the food to go. They boxed the food up to go and brought it to the table. I expressed the bad experience we had to Sten and he took care of the entire check. It was a nice gesture, however we were willing to pay for the food. We just wished we had a better dining experience for our anniversary. We had higher expectations because of the ratings and recommendations from friends and family. Unfortunately it was not a great experience. We didn t even get her name.
