Impressive collection, lovely gallery, the special...
Impressive collection, lovely gallery, the special exhibition on right now, 'Soy Isla' is absolutely incredible.

I didn't come earlier because I thought you had to pay, but it turns out over half of the exhibit is free on weekdays! I really enjoyed their beautiful collection, and the gift store is great.
Wonderful collection and vibe! Beautiful exhibitions. Go check it out.
What a Wonderfully quaint little gallery. Honestly I enjoyed it just as much as the National Gallery. Way less people too.
Impressive collection. I love going here. Look for the small 4 painting room. It will calm your soul. Attractions include the Rothko Room, the music room .The Phillips is fantastic!
Really interesting museum. Much larger than it seems from the outside.
Great collection. The Boat Party is there, spoiler alert
A gem of a small museum. The current exhibit important and relevant.
A place for modern day artist with revolutionary Ideas. Beautiful Collection.
Very good temporary exhibits, concerts and permanent collection
Other than the fact that there's barely any parking spaces around the building, I really liked the place. There are so many great paintings and collections of the most well known artists around the world. You are allowed to take pictures of most of the artifacts, which is definitely a plus for me.
Beautiful collection. Great interior space. Fun times.
Tge Philips Collection is a gem of modern art curation. The current Exhibit, Nordic Expressions is on display through Jan13, 2019.
One of the most wonderful museums I ve ever been to. The luncheon of the boating party by Renoir is just one of many highlights. Even one of my favorite expressionists (Franz Marc) made it into the Phillips Collection. They have a superb variety of artists and styles. I like how they displayed the paintings. The rooms are decent sized so you don t have to squeeze yourself through masses of people gathered around a single painting. Staff was very engaging and was fast giving you an explanation for some of the art work you were looking at. Great museum cafe with the possibility to sit outside in the sun. If you have to decide for one museum in DC the Phillips collection should be your go to museum. Even though you have to pay an entrance fee it is totally worth it. I would chose this museum over any other museum in and around DC!
Over bearing staff. Bird dogged during entire visit.
One of the treasures of DC. An extraordinary private collection turned museum. Definitely worth a visit.
Great collection of Impressionists, plus fun events
There are important works as the first modern art museum in Washington. Mark Rossoko, Mondrian, and Van Gogh. It is the best museum to look around quietly.
The Phillips collection has to be one of the most interesting, unique, and actually very valuable collections in the world. People come from all over to see this charming downtown homey gallery. With nice-looking classic chairs that you can actually sit in, you can view a wide variety of important 20th century art by artists such as Daumier, Klee, Rothko and daughters Impressionists. The most magnificent of course being the Renoir Boating Party. The Rothko Chapel in Houston was actually inspired by the Rothko Room at the Phillips.
One of my favorite DC museums, although it's paid for (unlike the Smithsonian) the Rothko collection is well worth your time and money.
Excellent small art gallery! There's a wide array of styles on display from a lot of prominent modern artists.
Beautiful space, carefully curated art. First US gallery dedicated to modern art--all you need to know
The Phillips Collection is one of my favorite museums in DC. They have an amazing collection of work that showcases the best of modern art. They often participate in cultural events around DC, and host fantastic events with music, food, and drink. Check out "Philips after 5" for fun monthly events.
Small space but exhibiting great art; saw a couple of Mark Rothko paintings and was impressed by the curation and space given to a single painting, which an absolute necessity to give Rothko's work justice.
Rated at 4 only because part of the collection is closed at the moment. Amazing, and free entry! Well worth a visit to see famous pieces of art
If you only have time for a single art museum in Washington, you should come here.
Some of the staff that work here were rude. One staff told me to take my book bag off and turn it in but did not tell other people visiting to put their bags up as well. I felt as though I was being judged and singled out which is not right.
This place is amazing. A unique and exceptional collection of modern art. This week see artist Stephan Wiltshite doing one of his cityscapes live!
Great Collection!!!!!!!! It has all my favorite artists and is very well curated. too bad that a large part is under construction
Three things.. it's a good price, its small.. and if you bring kids to perhaps try and get some culture, museum security will openly tail you through every room and floor..
The Phillips Collection is one of about a dozen museums in Washington, DC that requires a paid ticket. At $12 for an adult ticket, it's worth your money. The Phillips Collection is the first modern art museum in the USA and that a lot is worth $12.
It's located in the heart of Embassy Row in Dupont Circle so if you Metro to the museum, you'll enjoy a short walk surrounded by mansions, embassies, and historic row houses. Once you get to one of the greatest buildings of them all, you've arrived at The Phillips Collection.
Once you get your ticket, you'll walk into a room that introduced the history of the museum. Just past the museum store, you'll go up a beautiful winding staircase (there are elevators too) to the second and third floors filled with Renoir, Rothko, and reading nooks.
They recommend you spend more than just a few seconds soaking in the art to really appreciate it and pick up on details often hidden by a first glance. Once you've had your fill of indoor art, venture to the back to see a beautifully painted mural in the alley behind the museum.
If you're looking for off the National Mall museums, add The Phillips Collection to the list!
Amazing and even more female artists would have made it 5-star.
Impressive collection. It was a surprise find this small museum. Lots of Rothko and the famous Renoir's "Luncheon if the Boat Party"
Breathtakingly amazing works by well known artists
One of the Washingtonian places off the beaten path for outsiders and transient residents. This museum makes art fun! The exhibits are well curated to array and engage. I've been there with friends and solo. Most recently I checked out the American Moments photography visiting exhibit, subtle storytelling through photos and giving a visual historical perspective. Also, rather than a happy-hour I highly recommend rounding up your friends for the Phillips After Five events--drinks and small bites included. You'll have fun! Try it.
Lovely private collection. Usually not very crowded except for special exhibitions.
One of my favorite DC museums. And one of the handful I'm a member of. Don't miss it if you love late 19th to early 20th Century French and American art.
A few days ago I visited this museum, accompanied by some friends, the visit was more than four hours, most of the exhibitions were interesting.
Wonderful art collection - don't miss the impressionists and the Mondrian. Swing by the first Thursday of each month for Phillips After Five - it's on their website, and a guaranteed terrific time!
Quite an unremarkable establishment. Couldn't expect more from a fast food joint attached to a convenient store/gas station/truck stop.
Not free, like the Smithsonian museums, but worth every penny
The ticketed exhibitions may seem a little pricey, but the whole museum is very well done and totally worth a visit. A true star studded collection of work.
Good variety of art from the 1800s and up within a small collection.
Awesome art museum. It was great to spend a couple of hours checking out all the art on display here. I went during the weekday, so admission was free.
This gallery was fantastic. The collection of pieces inside were well presented and well lit. Fun things in the gallery were the wax room, the weird media piece beside the stairs (it had a looping DVD of video beside the piece, my wife and her sister didn't find it as amusing as I did) and the impressive architecture of the building. I will be going back when we have more time to casually browse the gallery, and hopefully I can take more of my family there as well.
Founded in 1921 by Duncan Phillips, the first Modern Art Museum in the United States. Famous works of the museum include Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party, Jacob Lawrence's The Migration Series, 30 odd-numbered works, Marc Rothko's Rothko Room, and Wolfgang Life's Laib Wax Room.
Free admission on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Free admission for annual members of the Whitney Museum in New York.
A half-day trip is enough to connect to The Society of Cincinnati within a 3-minute walk.
Since it is near Dupont Circle, it is convenient because there are many different types of restaurants.
Love small art museums like this with superb taste and collection in art; and a beautiful space to enjoy with. Was surprised to see one of my favorite artists Toulouse-Lautre exhibit here, what a noce treat Might need to come back again tomorrow to digest the permanent collection more
Phillips after 5 on Thursdays is the best time to go.
Can't wait to go back and see the full collection, it was partial closed when we were there for a concert! Loved what we did get to see!
Beautiful private museum. We listen to an excellent critique and explanation of a work. A little expensive.
Classy venue for a cocktail event.. beautiful space and lighting
Awesome exhibit. Would love to bring to SPRINGFIELD IL
Great collection, but strangely curated with paintings that seem unrelated placed together. Beautiful intimate space and good gift shop. Small cafe.
Great small museum with an interesting and ideosyncratic collection. Rotating shows focus on timely themes and artists.
Under renovation, collection quite limited, but free except for special exhibition.
Beautifully arranged permanent collection and exhibits, unique architectural features such as the beeswax room and the Rothko room.
The art is amazing and it's in a setting that's very intimate and cozy compared to the Smithsonian or the National Gallery of Art. That's due in large part to the fact that the building was once a mansion that belonged to the Phillips family.
Great museum. Good rotating exhibits, and has a nice little cafe and gift shop.
Wonderful modern art museum to go to at least once, but with all the Smithsonians nearby, don't waste your money coming monthly.
The smaller scale of this museum helps me really enjoy each piece without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. The collection is great.
My favorite part was the kindness of the guards, especially Sarah, she was lovely
Someone greeted us at the door, helpful without being pushy. And the permanent collection has some very nice selections. Unfortunately, the other building is closed for renovations, so no special exhibits right now.
Wonderful environment to walk around this home and view modern art. VanGogh, Rothko, Twatchman, Dove , O'Keefe. Alittle bit of everything to view. A real gem
Please enjoy Phillips Collection of important artists' work.
Great collection! Renoir exhibit was really nice. Admission with student ID is only $10.
Their collections and special exhibits are top notch. The white bean-kale soup, in their cafe, is quite good.
While the museum itself may seem overshadowed being in the same city as such giants as the Smithsonians and the National Gallery of Art, The Phillips Collection holds its own. The museums history, as well as the ideas and messages from its founder Duncan Phillips, gives all visitors an intimate view of the artwork. Also with Pierre-Auguste Renoir's famous "Luncheon of the Boating Party" residing permanently there, The Phillips Collection is a necessary stop for anyone visiting or living in D.C.
Excellent museum when we visited it was hosting the Rothko exhibit of photographs paintings and sketches
