Good food service was good. We enjoyed our visit will come again. Alec.
Good food service was good. We enjoyed our visit will come again. Alec.
We stayed just across the road at The Mill Cottage and even tho they were busy and we didn't know you may need to book a table on our first night they found us a table within half an hour.
We had a lovely meal of Mussels and Rissoto for me and shrimp and venison for her.
Lovely staff so friendly and we will be going over to try a pizza tonight and a few good beers.
I ate here about a year ago and the food was great. Unfortunately it wasn't today. Initially it was amusing - the menu showed that the starters consisted of a vegetable soup, with a bread roll and butter, whilst the vegan option was the same but without the butter! Clearly not much effort was expanded for vegans and as it turned out, not for anyone else either!
When the starters arrived I had the opposite of food envy - the food just looked awful. The person sat opposite me had a prawn cocktail which was just half a prawn, about a third of another prawn and a very small salad portion. I had chilli mushrooms which were over cooked and very poorly presented. The last member of our party had a soup which was too spicy and very watery. The main courses (turkey and beef) were generally ok, but came with cauliflower "cheese" which tasted nothing cheese like.
The pudding were more like childs' portions and the apple crumble was nowhere near crumble like.
We only complained about the first course and did get an apology but there was no offer to fix the problem.
I've no idea what happened since our last visit but we all said there was no way we would eat hear again.
The staff were pleasant (although I felt could have made more of an effort to put things right) and there was ample parking.

Friendly staff, nice little beer garden/patio outside. Cozy log fire in the winter.
I called in for a pint and a packet of crisps while walking the National Forest Way, which goes alongside. Lovely beer on their very pleasant patio, and friendly, helpful staff. Sadly, probably the only visit I'll ever make.
It was ok but nothing outstanding.
First beer was off but another was offered in its place.
The food was acceptable but portions are small and therefore expensive. Only 2 roast potatoes each!
Very quiet for a Sunday. School holiday season I suppose.
First time that the 5 of us have tried here for Sunday lunch so we ventured into the unknown.
Service was fine and timely.
Overall we thought it was good but slightly disappointing.
We will try again.
Had Chicken Club sandwich not overly impressed, chips were greasy and chicken was cold and dry. Very pleasant service though
Super cosy old worlde pub. Very historic and a disused mill wheel inside the pub behind glass at one end of the building. Excellent seating areas downstairs and even room by an open fire during colder months. There is an open plan restaurant upstairs for dining or larger parties. There is an amazing menu that caters for all tastes. The food is beautifully presented using unusual pottery and tastes amazing, to the point where you eat slowly to savour each mouth full.
The Slice of India is a superb meal selection. An enjoyable evening with lovely food and excellent staff.
It was good for food and good real ale selection but taste in music not good. Terrible chart r and b is not great in a rustic pub.
Superb food and excellent friendly service in a nice setting.
Driving up to the Mill Wheel in the dark you'll be greeted with fairy light lit up trees and an old barn style building. Inside its a nice cosy bar with casual sofa seating and low tables.
The restaurant is on the first floor and has a rustic feel. Service was very good with a friendly personal touch. Food was superb. Very well presented and well cooked.
Well with a visit.
A lovely little restaurant with a great atmosphere and a varied menu. The food is excellent and the price is very reasonable. They are very accommodating of children and dietary requirements. Lots of parking and really lovely staff. We've stayed overnight there too and it is lovely.
Would not go here for food not much of a chioce on menu shame as the pub itself is really nice and cosey
The location and setting is lovely. Unfortunately the service and food is awful.
An interesting place stopped for a drink but look forward to visiting again for a meal
Lovely friendly pub... Great food.. Dog friendly in bar too
Extremely impressed with the cuisine. It's rare to find good quality, vegan friendly food out of a large city. Top marks.
Christmas Dinner was a bit of a let down.
Starter - Brie, lovely
Main - lamb shank, tough and chewy
Desert - tiny slice of rhubarb tart with hard chunks of what looked like gelatin.
Disappointed as I always wanted to go here.
The pizzas are lovely, there is a nice atmosphere, the managers are very friendly it's still got the old Millwheel which is being restored back to working order.
Nice and clean, friendly and efficient staff, good range of reasonably priced drinks on offer. The food smells delicious, we will definitely return and next time we'll sample the food
1st time I have been to the Mill Wheel and I will definitely go again, excellent food and friendly staff , worth a visit
Excellent food and service!! Good selection of Ales!
Good food and friendly staff-what more can you ask for?Good selection of beers as well.
Wow, How it has changed! Just been for a family meal to celebrate a birthday and shocked at how poor the Mill Wheel is now. The menu is small and unexciting, rustic chips are in fact McCain's chunky chips. The bread n butter pudding dessert was cold when it should have been hot and I'm bald but managed to have several hairs in my dessert! It was that bad we just wanted to pay up and leave never to return. My advice go to the Ferriers inn at Lount, Pub grub but miles better in quality and choice. Such a shame.
Lovely meal.went for the steak cooked perfect maybe a little colour missing rocket or peas. maybe sold as extras would have improved the look. But nonetheless very good. Lovely warm atmosphere friendly staff
The promo leaflet says you'll be made to feel like a regular from your first visit and it really is true, we dropped in on the way back from an afternoon at Calke Abbey and even though it was obviously a busy evening we were warmly welcomed and fitted in.
Theres a great choice of classics on the menu and we were served quickly with generous portions.
The beef dripping chips were gorgeous and the steak and ale pie was packed with meat, My fish had a gorgeous crispy batter but I did ask to take my left overs home as it was so large (not because I'd "sampled" most of my Mums dinner too )
Most of all the genuinely friendly atmosphere is what I'll return for.
Beautiful Sunday roast dinner! My new go-to for a Sunday lunch I think!!
Have eaten here many times but today was exceptional. Venison pie and steamed veg, steak and ale pie with veg. Excellent beer and wine all at a good price. Service, welcoming, above all genuinely happy to serve you and give you the best value for money. If you have a problem raise it. It will be 100% sorted. However this will be a very rare event here. 10 out of 10 all round. Keep up the good work.
Stopped here on a sunny afternoon for a beer. Nice ambiance large choice of beers including locally brewed bitters. Will visit again
Meal was superb and so was the service! Would certainly recommend The Mill Wheel to my friends.
Superb lunch. A simple but adequate menu of pub favourites, but don't perfectly.
The chicken pie was to die for.
Beef dripping chips. Mmm. Mmm.
Most importantly, open all afternoon.
We came here with friends. Great first impressions from the building. Sadly, not impressed with the food or the speed of service. The pizza was apparently very nice (made fresh), however my burger was disappointing (fairly tasteless, probably frozen) and the children's fish was just half of an adult's portion, which looked like a cheap frozen one. Worse, it was beer battered. So the kids ate expensive chips and peas.
Despite booking a table, and having two young children present, we waited over half an hour for our order to be taken - the whole lunch affair took over 2 hours.
Lovely in the sun, nice patio area, great sandwiches
Went there for dinner before Christmas. Nicely refurbished interior leaning towards modern, clean looks, good food if somewhat unconventional combinations, good quality drinks and friendly staff, we enjoyed our evening. The parking was difficult to find in the dark but it could be just me.
Nice little pub with a restaurant upstairs. Food was good and staff pleasant. Decor downstairs is very nice but upstairs is a bit scruffy but not a deal breaker. Recommended.
Good atmosphere, great location, friendly staff, always have a good visit here, lost count the times we have been here.
Impeccable service. Brilliant and delicious vegan starter and main options. Unfortunately no vegan dessert available currently but the standard menu was varied and those I dined with loved every bite.
We have visited a good few times over the past two years.
A 30th birthday party, Valentine s Day and our anniversary.
The food and menu are amazing.
Staff are very friendly!
Would definitely recommend!!
We picked the Mill Wheel for an early meal as we were visiting Calke Abbey. We were not disappointed, staff are friendly and keen. The pizzas we had were really good and our deserts were lovely. Highly recommend if you are in the area.
It was some years since we visited the Mill Wheel so after unsatisfactory episodes with other restaurants when decided to give the MW a go so we booked and were pleased at the menu, food, service and venue. Some days later, however. Mothering Sunday when it was very busy, the meal was good but unfortunately the greens were served nearly raw and uncooked, we complained and a discount was offered off the bill, which was acceptable. Would we dine there again, yes we would.
Turned up this evening and staff were extremely accommodating for a table, with out a booking. Beautiful building, just my sort of place, with beams, bricks and the actual old Mill Wheel still in the building.
Food was very nice, just the right portion size. A beer festival is currently on this Bank Holiday weekend, so lots of choice, of which we are sampling
The best staff! So kind and were quick with drinks and orders! Food was great - good quality and tastes very good. Overall a really nice place for a meal with a nice setting. Even a good place for a pint after a long day! Very impressed!
We prebooked a table for a thursday night.
Bar service a little shambolic and table wasn't ready.
Had to ask for more cutlery after eating starter. Main course of chicken/mushroom pie was a little dry although plenty of filling.
Salmon was dry and not very exciting, crushed potato and asparagus lovely.
We have had nicer food locally for same cost.
Whole experience was slightly disappointing.
Excellent quality food. Great selection of beers. Great venue. Good friendly service
Tasty meals, friendly staff. Place worth to visit and have a lunch or dinner there.
Unfortunately we did not have a very good experience here. The young barman downstairs was friendly and efficient but upstairs in the restaurant it was poor. The tables were shabby and sticky and the chairs looked like they had been bought from a sale of old school chairs. Three of us had a starter of chilli mushrooms, which was bizarre! It was far too spicy, even for chilli lovers, and the few mushrooms there were were hidden in some strange gloopy, soft batter. There was more of this stringy batter stuff than mushroom and we did wonder what on earth we were eating. Two of us then had the Thai curry, one of which arrived a good ten minutes after the other. To be fair we received an apology and that late meal was not charged for. However the curry was barely edible, it was so ridiculously over spiced. Both of us who had the curry can take plenty of heat but this was beyond hot. The chicken itself was nice, and tender but what on earth goes on in that kitchen with chilli?!! Apparently the bread and butter pudding was very nice, but the brownie two of us had was dreadful, far too sweet and the sugar crystallised. Brownies are supposed to be gooey. These were flat and hard. And to top it all off the two young waitresses were very good at ignoring us while busy chatting with their heads down behind a counter. They didn t seem happy in their job and more focussed on their own conversations than keeping an eye on the customers to attend to their needs.
Always delicious food at reasonable prices served by friendly, helpful staff
The whole place felt cold and unwelcoming. The staff were pleasant enough. The food was passable. I had the roast beef Sunday lunch. There were 3 small thin bits of meat, 2 roast potatoes, a small amount of parsnip and the plate was swimming with Luke warm gravy. There was a small bowl of cauliflower cheese between 4 of us and 2 bowls of, what looked like, unwashed baby carrots, mange tout and broccoli.
For pudding I chose apple crumble and custard. This was under cooked and luke warm.
I won't be going back.
Lovely food. Great atmosphere. Friendly staff. Recommend a visit. Food for all tastes including veggie n vegan x
Nice place, beer good, pizza good especially as it was 2for1 on Mondays.
Lovely country pub/restaurant we recently went for Indian night and it was really nice fresh and the staff made us feel very welcome x
Thank you
Food was lovely and the staff were excellent
Highly recommend by all 14 of us. We all enjoyed your pizza menu.
See you soon.
The staff were very helpful fitting us in around a large party booking. The meal arrived quickly and it was really good. The seafood platter was substantial and the tiger prawn starter was amazing. We will return.
Lovely food & friendly bar staff. It was a joy to see a roaring fire in September.
Nice Sunday roast with excellent Yorkshire puds, the veg was a little disappointing but not exclusively
Lovely place, nice atmosphere, tasty food. Well labeled gf veg and vegan items on the menu, and a lot of variety - we had pizzas and they were delicious. Was impressed by the old mill wheel display, pretty awsome.
Excellent Sunday lunch. Great place, lovely atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff.....what more could you ask for! Fantastic in every respect! Highly recommended
First visit today with Grandson and his wife. What a beautiful place this is, staff are so friendly you would have thought we were regulars! We all had pizza and they were probably the best pub pizza I've ever had. Recently moved to the area and will most definitely be visiting the Mill Wheel again. Many thanks for superb service and friendly Staff.
Found this lovely place by accident while returning home after purchasing a car, looks great from the roadside and even better on the inside, when you walk in, the mill wheel is on show and immediately gets your attention, walking through to the bar you immediately notice a lovely log fire (perfect on a winters night and smells wonderful) and a well stocked bar, the guy who works behind the bar is great and very attentive! The real ale selection is great, I had the Jaipur IPA, it was spot on . Definitely be returning soon!! Great to see places like this still thriving.
First impressions of the Mill Wheel was that it looked lovely. Definitely the type of place we would like to enjoy a Sunday roast though sadly we never had the opportunity to try the food as we were told we could not have the beef roast as More
