Pauline Shephard Review of The Mill Wheel

Unfortunately we did not have a very good experience here. The young barman downstairs was friendly and efficient but upstairs in the restaurant it was poor. The tables were shabby and sticky and the chairs looked like they had been bought from a sale of old school chairs. Three of us had a starter of chilli mushrooms, which was bizarre! It was far too spicy, even for chilli lovers, and the few mushrooms there were were hidden in some strange gloopy, soft batter. There was more of this stringy batter stuff than mushroom and we did wonder what on earth we were eating. Two of us then had the Thai curry, one of which arrived a good ten minutes after the other. To be fair we received an apology and that late meal was not charged for. However the curry was barely edible, it was so ridiculously over spiced. Both of us who had the curry can take plenty of heat but this was beyond hot. The chicken itself was nice, and tender but what on earth goes on in that kitchen with chilli?!! Apparently the bread and butter pudding was very nice, but the brownie two of us had was dreadful, far too sweet and the sugar crystallised. Brownies are supposed to be gooey. These were flat and hard. And to top it all off the two young waitresses were very good at ignoring us while busy chatting with their heads down behind a counter. They didn t seem happy in their job and more focussed on their own conversations than keeping an eye on the customers to attend to their needs.
