I can't say enough good about this place. The service is prompt professional and friendly. The food is fresh and delicious. The menu is unique but not intimidating. The place itself is clean and welcoming. A great place to meet with your friends and family to dine and visit.

Even thoughI had to wait a little bit; like most restaurants that are busy. I was seated at this cute little table. I had the grilled beet salad, It was wonderful; and I had fries (on the side) was delightful , I also hade the basil soup to me was a little muddled and did not remind me of basil soup.would not order that again . It needs to be tweaked. I loved loved the tea divine temple green tea. Nummie. It was vary nice Atmosphere. Love the decor. I think it would be nice for lady's day's outing for a lunch or brunch get together. Even though the service was slow .It was nice getaway for me

Very unhappy!

Very unhappy!
We were celebrating my sister's dinner last night and had one of the worst dining experiences I've had. First off you have to park across the street in the parking lot and ascend about 30 stairs to get the front door with signs that say "Just a bit further. It's worth the walk." That should have been my first clue that something was amiss.

My sister has a young child and informed them of this ahead of time during reservations. They assured her it would be okay. There was no where to put the baby carrier and we were crammed into the corner.

I arrived a few minutes late and the server never asked for my drink order. My mother at the end of the table even told the server that my wife and I would like a drink order when she took the food order and she never came back. She missed out on two glasses of wine (or more). Come to think of it, we never even received a refill on the water. Two people in the group ordered a pot of tea to split and they charged an EXTRA $1.50 for the second cup. This is not a bottomless beverage that they chose to share. I've never been charged for splitting a menu item.

Three of us ordered a ribeye. One ordered medium well and two medium. The medium well order came back medium rare at most. Mine was medium well and one steak actually came back correctly. The underdone steak was sent back and the server took the whole plate with sides an all. This was after everyone else was 75% done with the meal when the server came by for the first check. The steak was gone for a good 10 minutes before it was brought back on it's lonesome on a side plate. It was practically drooping over the edges of the plate. Oh, and before the steak came back the server tried to say that I swapped steaks with my sister, which would make sense if we didn't order a DIFFERENT menu item. Besides, who blames the customer? Anyway, then the server brought a small side of brussels sprouts for my sister's steak on the comically small plate.

After dinner our food was cleared and it took several minutes to come for our dessert order, which we requested right away. My sister's desert was brought several minutes after everyone else's because it had a candle in it or something. The server never brought extra silver for the desserts so people were using their butter knives, or whatever wasn't cleared. She finally realized this half-way through and offered to bring more forks.

As we were trying to leave, wait staff seemed upset that we were blocking the aisle getting the baby in the carrier. Again, they were made aware during the reservation and chose to put us in a high traffic area. My mother very calmly explained the events of the evening to the person that seemed to be in charge and he replied, "I'm sorry about that." Nothing else was said or done to try to make it right.

The worst part of the whole experience was that there was a mandatory 18% gratuity for parties of 6 or more. We had exactly 6 (without baby). I have worked in food service and have never left less than 20% in the last 10 years.. I've never been so angry about having to pay gratuity in my life.

So in summary: The food is mediocre at best and overpriced, they nickle and dime you, they are not kid friendly, they have terrible service, and their customer service is just as bad as everything else.

Do not go here!

Such a great place!! I see some negative reviews and I don't really understand why. The food was great, so was the service. The people that served us were friendly. Their gift shop is so cute! As far as their tea goes, I would say that it was pretty good quality. The really only "negative" thing I can think of is that it was a little expensive.

Heard some good things about the Mad Hatter so decided to take my date out for brunch on a beautiful Friday morning. Made reservations and were taken right away by our hostess. However, if you want a little privacy ask to be seated outside in the patio area which is screened in and has a nice view of the garden area. Our initial seats inside were cramped and within six inches of the table next to us. The restaurant is located in a large Victorian type house so the rooms are relatively small so most of the tables are on top of each other. The food was very good and well presented. I had a plate of their chicken and waffles. Chicken tenders were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Waffles were very large and tasted great. Had one small cup of syrup and my suggestion would be to place bottles of syrup on tables to allow those to choose how much or how little they would use with a couple of varieties. My date had a green goddess sandwich with turkey plus combination of sweet potato and regular French fries which she enjoyed. Only small complaint is they don't have any ranch dressing as most other eating establishments carry. Option of aoli was good but not exactly what she wanted. This place is very busy and seems to be a destination for many tea parties. Service was good and pricing competitive with other places in the area. A very nice stay at the Mad Hatter and definitely would come back again.
Very unique place with some history behind it. Great spot right near the banks of the Mississippi. Check it out, especially when the weather is nice and can sit outside!

Foods not very good, building it s self is cool, but who ever designed this restaurants interior must hate the owner because I have never walk into a shop and felt so hungry and depressed at the same time.

A very unique establishment, and a must-see for foodies. This historical mansion, and it's beautiful grounds above the Rum River, are an Anoka gem. Very well maintained, welcoming staff, and a treat to peruse.

I had the Beer and Brown Sugar Salmon, the catch of the day. It was delicious, very fresh and the presentation was attractive but not too foo-foo. My only complaint is the serving size. I do not expect mammoth portions at a nicer restaurant, and I'm prepared for quality over quantity. However, the serving of salmon was literally less than even a serving. If a "deck of cards" is the measure of a serving of protein, this fell short by about 30%. For $26, and with less than a cup of veggies- I was a little thrown off. BUT...quality? Top notch. Probably the best salmon dish I've ever had. Service? Excellent. Try it!!

Our waitress, Bridget, and the rest of the event planning staff did an excellent job staying on top of our ever-changing RSVP list for my sister-in-law's wedding shower today! When more people came than expected, they worked with us to figure out the seating situation. They were all so sweet and attentive!

Been driving buy this place for years and finally decided to stop in and check it out and was pleasantly surprised. Meat balls were delicious and they had no problem making a substitution. Only wish they had a non flavored green tea on the menu had to make do with an Arnold Palmer.

This is easily one of my most favorite restaurant destinations in Twin Cities. The quaint atmosphere, impeccable menu, and knack for creating and executing exquisite events is unmatched. This small business that is locally owned is one of a kind.

I went for dinner along with 4 of my girlfriends. The food was wonderful! I love the decor at this new site. It was pretty busy so we had to wait a long time for our dinners. We didn't mind as it gave us longer to talk. We all agreed that a little roll or bread of some sort would have been nice to go along with our wine while we waited. A roll or baguette would be lovely with the dinners too. Thought you would appreciate our suggestions.

Nice ambience. Upscale but very limited menu. The food was good, but the portions were small for the price, it would be nice to get more pasta in that great big bowl, and it wouldn't cost them much. I was disappointed with the caramelized Brussels sprouts, they were tasty, but not really caramelized. Enjoyed the beer, although again a limited selection, but covered the gamut, light to dark. Plan to return to try the tea service.

We were a party of 7 for the Queen's Tea late afternoon on a Saturday. Their website recommends making a reservation ahead of time especially for a weekend. I really appreciated the confirmation call 2 days before our reservation. Loved how pretty the preset table looked - real china tea cups & saucers, cloth napkins. Very nice.
Our tea experience hostess was awesome! We tried so many teas. Our favorites were royal wedding & temple something.
The multi tiered tea service tray was arranged so attractively. Some items sounded strange by name but tasted great!
We thoroughly enjoyed our time visiting with each other & noshing on such tasty treats as we sipped tea. I will definitely be back again.

Thank you so much Mad Hatter for such a lovely setting, pleasant & attentive staff and scrumptious food & drink!

What an amazing place! The history behind the house is neat. Place is decorated really well giving it a nice atmosphere. Brought my mother-in-law here for Mother s Day and she loved it so much that she wants to come back for her birthday. Tea and food was on point. Gift shop sells nice items as well as tea. Great customer service too. 5-stars and we will be back!!

I enjoy doing Afternoon Tea at the Mad Hatter. Make sure to call ahead for reservations for Afternoon Tea as it's not on the menu. It's a historic home on the river with a wonderful view and good food.

Beautiful building, perfect decor, accommodating staff, passionate owner. Such a gem! The only reason I did not give it 5 Stars was that I did not know and was not asked about the children's tea for my five-year-old in attendance, but she enjoyed herself and wants to go back so all in all it was a great experience for us!

Had a reservation with friends for brunch. I was not expecting the establishment to have so much history and charm. I loved reading about it while enjoying their popular cinnamon roll. The medley hash was a solid choice and would definitely order again. A fun, unique experience that I'll be recommending to friends and family.

This is a fun atmosphere. The staff is friendly and the ambiance is spot on. I love the whimsy of this historically preserved home/restaurant. The only issue is the food portions. They are extremely small and the sweet and doughy scones take center stage. The finger sandwiches are good but beyond delicate. It doesn't need to be a gluttonous meal, but for $45 a head, it's not quite hitting on par. The savories were the best part, but very limited and tiny. The tea is ordered by collective consensus of your party, which limits your selections. Other than that, fun and great place for a little par-tea. Lol.

My daughter and I have been twice now - and hopefully will become a tradition. This is definitely a destination when I visit her in Minnesota! Cakes and scones are wonderful and tea is always plentiful. The house is full of books and granny s and sits up on a hill overlooking the river. A peaceful and special place to visit if you are in Anoka!

We come here every year for my sister's birthday. We are usually happy with everything. Yesterday, we were in and our server was not pleasant at all. We got the tea service which isn't the cheapest and could not get our server to bring us additional tea nor did she check on us at all. She was checking on all the tables around us. She also almost dumped the dessert tray all over my sister and some on the desserts fell onto the table. Every time she did stop by, she would just grab something and not say anything. It was the worst experience we have had here. My sister was dissapointed as this is her favorite thing to do for her birthday. She said she is not sure if she wants to come back.

My first time at the Mad Hatter was very pleasant!...

My first time at the Mad Hatter was very pleasant! We ordered off the brunch menu and the food was excellent. All 8 of us ladies were very pleased. The atmosphere was fun and light, there was 4 other parties in our room, and it didn't feel crowded or too loud. We all had great conversations and the server was great! The house has been restored beautifully and it was fun to go upstairs to the giftshop and tour more of the house. Parking lot is a little small. The main entrance was a little hard to find at first but they have lots of signs to guide you in the right direction. I think because the entrance is at the back of the house, not the traditional front. I bet this is a great place in the summer for outside brunch. I'd recommend to anyone.

Back in January this year (2016) I chose this place to celebrate my birthday with my gal pals -- a full service "parlor" tea! And, what a splendid birthday treat it was! The service was exemplary and the food and tea were extraordinary! Thank you Mad Hatter for a wonderful birthday treat!

I came here for a special event and did the Queen of Hearts tea service package for $36. Everything was pleasant until we realized they over charged most of my friends and family. They ended up getting charged about 50% gratuity for some odd reason. When we tried to dispute it with the managers they denied overcharging as well as failed to explain in detail what the charges were. It doesn t make sense to pay $36 + .18% tip and somehow got charged over $50. One of us thought we paid and signed for $48 but were charged over that amount. This is fraud! This place is sketchy! Beware if you go there!

I really wanted to like this place considering there s not a lot of places like this but due to the discrepancy and inability to rectify the issue, I don t know if I would want to go back.

We just stopped for a drink on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The grounds and restaurant are very pretty and the food we saw was prepared with great detail. Appropriate for a fine English tea. On the other hand the staff is anything but polished and could be said to be a tad rude. They weren't in costume thus shouldn't behave like Alice's tea partners. We were sorta greeted and asked to look around and that was allowed with great hesitation. We were pushed to get a table (and it was almost empty due to being at 2pm.) Our waitress was short and missed most verbal social amenities. As we left at 2:25, an handicapped older couple arrived and was turned away being told they were already closed for lunch. The website clearly stated they were open until 3pm for lunch. A word of warning, handicap parking involves walking up the hill and then around the building.

The place has a ton of potential but the staff need to become more refined and work on social graces that are equal the level of the cliental they should be able to draw.

This was our first visit and as stated we were impressed with the building and grounds. We loved the screened in wrap around porch and will try it again. I hope for better results next time.

My family and I visited this last weekend for high tea. They were very accommodating of wheelchairs and gluten-free needs, and also worked around my and my husband's vegan diet. The staff was incredibly helpful and kind. The house and property is charming, too!

This is the most special and wonderful place to go if you want to escape your cares. I have been a long time customer of the Mad Hatter but what Liz and her amazing team has done at the new Ferry St location is unbelievable. It is like you are escaping back in time to an amazing southern mansion! Not to mention you are treated with the best service, food and warm hospitality. The decor is so beautiful and the FOOD IS AMAZING! The scones, the tea, the BEET SALAD...YUM! I love having dinner there as well, it is a private feeling & very quaint experience. Can not wait to go back!

We attended a Fairy Tea Party at The Mad Hatter. It was a lot of fun. The Mad Hatter worked hard to make each child feel special. They served finger foods, tea and lemonade for the kids. Really fun!
