Nice selection of painting, but my reason for visiting was the Roman Amphitheatre in the basement. Not a great deal left but amazing what London is built on. Free to enter and well worth a visit.

Free admission to the museum. Very quiet and comfortable art museum. There is a place to sit and there is a souvenir shop.

I stopped by for a while, and I came out to listen to the closing exhibition [15-10-5 minutes ago] rather than children like [the children in art]. ^^

Interesting gallery with a range of not-quite top class paintings beautifully displayed. Some of the works will appeal more to people with an interest in the history of London as they are evocative of life in the streets and pageantry of the past. Included in the visit is the Roman amphitheatre, again lavishly presented (I'm guessing the Corporation of the City of London has more money than most local councils). Well worth a visit.

Small Gallery with some exquisite paintings.. In the basement is a Roman amphitheatre which is great to find after soaking up the fantastic artworks. Grab a free audio guide from the reception it's great to enhance the history portrayed in the building.

A hidden gem in the heart of London, I especially enjoyed walking through Londinium's Roman Amphitheatre in the basement. Superb collection of 19th century art, with Millais, Holman Hunt and two particularly lovely Tissot. And all free of charge. Highly recommended.

The Guildhall Art Gallery houses the art collection of the City of London, England. It is a stone building in a semi-gothic style intended to be sympathetic to the historic Guildhall, which is adjacent and to which it is connected internally.

Quite a surprise really as I never expected the art works here to be so good. It's free entry, I was also very luck as I arrived just as a "Free Tour" was beginning. Our guide (Amber) was very bubbly, fun and enthusiastic. She brought a selection of the paintings alive by explaining the background to the painting and her interpretation of the scene portrayed. The gallery is represented over 4 levels, with the basement level given over to the archaeological revelation of the roman ruins of an Amphitheatre.
The free tours of the gallery are on these days and times: Tuesday, Friday, Saturday: 12.15, 13.15, 14.15 and 15.15.
There is a lift providing Wheelchair access to all floors.

Attended a conference at Guildhall then went to the art gallery and the Roman Amphitheatre, wonderful array of paintings and great sense of history, will be bringing my nieces and nephews who are studying Roman history.

Leaving the circuit of main museums in London is often very rewarding and Guildhall is so worth the detour or excursion, however one sees it!
Though I have to admit going to Guildhall just for the remains of the Roman amphitheater. Went through all the other rooms exhibiting mainly Victorian art without even looking at the walls, straight (though it is the least straight route possible) to the underground of the Gallery to find quite underwhelmingly humble ruins, especially since some event was sadly scheduled for the day and the space was crammed with boxes and technological paraphernalia and not the least atmospheric, as it is supposed to normally feel.
Just then did I go back to the rest of the gallery... The dramatic spirituality of William Blake here, Rossetti s angelic beauties there, and Burne-Jones, Millais... A wonderful collection of pre-Raphaelites, including some huge, epic paintings of prime quality, quite a few show stoppers really and no noisy crowds to hinder one s appreciation. Plus views of London across the times...
And though I don t like taking guided tours, am glad staff kindly suggested I take one for what an amazing guide we had, contagious in her wit and passion for art! Some 45 minutes worth a lifetime of information, that actually felt like only 15 while I wish had actually lasted 90 minutes!

I had a brilliant experience here. A nice range of art work including mathematical patterns. It was very quiet so it was possible to admire the work. Entrance was free and there is a guided tour.

Definitely a neat gallery. While its collections may not be as massive or famous as other galleries around London, the Guildhall Art Gallery is certainly worth a stop. A highlight of the building is the Roman Auditorium that can be found in its basement. It was very quiet the Friday that I visited. This was a pleasant surprise.

Was very surprised by this gallery - came up on a self guided walk and didn't expect to spend time in here but when you're outside the whole area is stunning and even better inside, great art, lovely staff and their own Roman ruins in the basement! Excellent!

A small place - but with beautiful artwork, a fascinating ancient monument in the basement (London's Roman Amphitheatre) plus friendly staff, makes it a good attraction to visit to complement the others in the area.

Awesome art gallery! The cherry on top was the roman amphitheatre beneath; it looks like something out of the hunger games. Amazing art collection with artworks from all over the world and with many focusing on London. There's also a parchment with Shakespeare's signature on it which was interesting to see. Would highly recommend going!

Always a treat visiting this marvelous building full of beautiful art. We come to visit it because of "A Sonata of Beethoven" by Alfred Edward Emslie who lived in our house and painted that picture in our drawing room :) we have a print but it's truly magnificent being able to see it out on display (quite massive in person)
Underneath the gallery are the remnants of a roman Colosseum which are well preserved and interesting to see. The paintings are truly breathtaking and all host such charm about them. I could spend hours here (and have done many times). The atmosphere is so calming and always an appropriate temperature. Highly recommend this as a day out in itself. ADMISSIONS ARE FREE.

A lovely spot! A real hidden gem amongst Londons many many art galleries. Being so close to some of the main attractions it is totally worth coming to and it s mostly free too.

Some fantastic drawings on what london may have been and the environment of the gallery is spacious and welcoming and not at all sterile which is great.

Good accessibility and some security checks.

If you want to know more about London then visit here.

It s also home to some roman ruins, which in all fairness was really boring, but if you re a super fan of that kind of archeological then you re sure to love it.

Go. Go for the underrated (Albeit small art gallery) but mostly go for the beautiful Guild Hall itself. There are few rooms I've been in to in London and immediacy said 'wow' out loud.

The crypt is also incredibly beautiful and the well lit and the roman Amphitheatre fascinating.

Definitely well worth a visit

I very much enjoyed the exhibition of paintings of London architecture. The gallery is superb. My one disappointment is that whilst one is understandably not allowed to take photos of the art, there was not any guide book, catalogue or brochure available. The charming lady on the desk said they don't do brochures because they don't sell! They wont sell if there aren't any! Surely with modern copier printing they could make a small run of colour leaflets at the very least. The exhibition was superb but lack of booklet marred my experience as I have no images to look back on or share with my artist friends.

Some interesting paintings/artwork and an informative mathematical exhibition. The Roman Amphitheatre on the lower level also adds to the interest. A good couple of hours to do it properly. Free to get in.
