A hidden gallery in a city square, where we find a strange circle with darker tiles that tell us the size of the Roman amphitheater that was located there 2000 years ago

Best paintings and full of history. The amphitheatre is worth a visit.

This feels a little hidden away, but it's a really interesting gallery. Even less well known is that in the bowels of the museum is a Roman Amphitheatre!

The Guildhall complex is London's oldest city hall. It rises in the Square Mile where the first urban nucleus developed from the Roman foundation to the middle of the first century AD.
Various noteworthy rooms of different capacities for entertainment, dinners and shows can be visited: The Great Hall 900 seats, the Old Library and Print Room 500/600 seats, East and West Crypts 500 seats, the Livery Hall 330 seats, Basinghall Suite 100 seats, Chief Commoner's Parlor 24 seats and the Art Gallery 330 people.
The latter, already present at the end of the 1800s, was destroyed during the Second World War, and then rebuilt in 1985 and inaugurated in 1999. At the beginning of the works, the Roman amphitheater was discovered underground, which has been open to the public since 2002 .
The entrance to the Gallery is free, there are Victorian works from various periods and others representing events and city life from the 17th century.

Collection of paintings and some pretty interesting stuff. How about magna carta? Go see.

A fantastic collection of 19th century and pre-raphaelite paintings, I was thrilled to see such quality, and all for a free entry fee, you will want to donate something after seeing what quality there is here. Also, I went to see the special exhibition of King Henry V's Crystal sceptre, which was a gift to the city of London in the early 15th Century.

A gem in the City of London. Free to view and in there basement is a the remains of a Roman Auditorium. Kids will love this.

Beautiful place in a beautiful part of the city. Rally quick to go through it so its definitely worth a visit. Don't forget to go below the ground floor to get a look of the roman amphitheatre.

A gem in the city of London! I caught the start of a guided tour. Worth it. A good lunchtime detour. Tours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Fridays 1.15, 2.15 and 3.15. The artwork on display has rich history which is quite mind blowing. Will try to upload photos later

Really interesting and beautiful art gallery in Central London

Small, but incredible place, some great artwork and seasonal exhibitions changing at regular intervals. This placereally is a hidden gem in the city that unfortunately not enough people know about, though on the plus side that also means it's never overcrowded. See the art and also the Roman amphitheatre. Re-live real history beneath the streets of London. Has a nice little museum shop too where goods are reasonably priced compared to similar places. I've taken many visitors here and they are always impressed. Whilst here, it's also well worth a visit to the main guildhall itself, which is just opposite. If you're lucky they sometimes have events going on and you can see all the pomp and pageantry of an old style London ceremony. Robes, wigs, the lot.

A relatively small but pleasant place to visit.
The ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheater deserve maximum note.
It has several pictures of great beauty.

Nothing beats going to Guildhall Yard on Shrove Tuesday - February 9th to see the Worshipful Poulter's pancake race.
Even better is I can take time to go in to the Guildhall Art Gallery which is actually totally brilliant.
I love the Sir Henry Irving (great friend of Bram Stoker) the great Victorian actor and organiser extraordinaire at the Lyceum Theatre London. A statue of Sir Henry is in the basement created by the extremely talented sculptor Edward Onslow Ford. They also have lots of other exhibitions too numerous to mention with of course the visually inspiring ruins of a Roman Amphitheatre.
Very highly recommended.

Primarily Victorian works which can be schmaltzy. Remains of a Roman amphitheatre are in the basement.

Had passed by here many times without going in and glad I did. Lots of great paintings and also other artefacts with some good displays on the roman Times. Gives you a good view on how London has changed over the years.

Awesome secret gallery with an extraordinary ancient Roman Amphitheater

Beautiful painting and wonderfully preserved Roman amphitheater. A true hidden gem amongst The City.

Housed in a splendid building is a superb art collection. It certainly brightened a chilly damp day.

Worth visiting if you are in the area. Entrance is free, and you get to explore the gallery as well as the ruins of the Colosseum in the basement level. The gallery is well organized with explanations on the wall.

The place is one of the less busy attractions and the staff are very friendly.

Great paintings. Free admission. The exhibition is manageable and therefore nice to experience even with a small time window.

Solid if not very adventurous collection of pictures. however well worth a visit if you are wandering around the city.

The art gallery is one of the best galleries i have been to so far. From the very beginning the staff has provided us with sufficient information and a warm welcome. The washrooms are high class and are definitely one of the best and cleanest from all the other public places has to offer. There is ample room to keep your jackets and start exploring the art gallery. Not only are thr paintains spectacuar but they convey to you a very important part of mediaeval and industrial England. Additionallly there are remains of the Romans and so forth. The gallery on the top floor was the best according to me ans its a must go.

Some fantastic resplendent looking paintings, nice range on both floors. More classical style upstairs and more modern downstairs. Would highly recommend visiting this place along with the Museum of London nearby!

Fairly small place, downstairs is cool... Including the Amphitheatre, which wouod be best to go through with a tour guide or an audio guide :)

Interesting selections of artwork which documents many major historical events in London. Also include the remains of the roman theatre which should not be missed

A wonderful free gallery plus an interesting bit of Roman history in the form of the ruins of an amphitheatre

This is one of my favourite places in the City - it is so full of history but in a very intimate way - for instance there is a very dramatic painting depicting the Lord Mayor Show and it s full of real life characters of the City from that time - everything from beggars to aristocrats all jumbled together in a mesmerising composition. If you are in the neighbourhood, pop in - it s free and you won t regret it!

Storage for a Marble of Margaret Thatcher. Interesting to discover. Can't share my opinion of that here due to terms and conditions. Anyway aside from that the building is beautiful (being by Richard Gilbert Scott) and the collection is well worth seeing.

There was a special exhibition on London's cityscape. The permanent gallery is worth seeing.

Accidentally happened upon this place whilst out walking for lunch. What a great place to spend sometime with your thoughts whilst looking at some impressive art

It was nice, there was an exhibition depicting Londinium and its past building ruins. Great to know that there is past history still being uncovered til this day

Very small gallery comprising two rooms in the basement on the right hand side of the Guildhall square. Small shop at the entrance. Pleasant staff. Reduced entry price if you work/live in the area or with an Art Fund card.

Excellent fine! Great paid for exhibition on built London but some beautiful other works, a Roman amphitheatre and super social history. Definitely worth a visit.

Art work is mainly London based and Victorian. The building is an excellent modern space where the pictures are well displayed.

Useless. Travelled here especially to see one of the temporary exhibitions, only to be told I couldn't get in because they were only accepting cash as they were changing the tills. No help or information whatsoever.

Very interesting. Good for people with mobility issues
