A wonderful collection of 19th (but not exclusively) century paintings in a beautiful building built on the remains of the Roman amphitheatre dated ca. 50AD (which you can see). And it's free!

Beautiful free museum where you can see and study the paintings of great 19th/early 20th century masters such as Sir Leighton, John Collier, Walter Osborne or Henry Scott Tuke, amongst others. There are also some Roman ruins underneath. But what makes this gallery are really the 19th century paintings.

Interesting gallery right in the centre of the city but sufficiently off the tourist trail that you can enjoy it without being crowded out by camera clickers and wailing brats. Free guided tours during the day (about quarter past the hour I think). You can't really miss the centrepiece of the main gallery, John Singleton Copley's huge painting The Defeat of the Floating Batteries at Gibraltar, as the building is almost contracted around it.

A tucked away, quiet haven; a retreat from the surrounding City financial district. A relatively small collection of paintings, but some interesting London history, dating back to Roman times, and, of course, the excavated remains of the Londinium amphitheatre two stories beneath current ground level.

The first time I meet a museum, by definition created for visitors, but feels better without visitors. The gallery is open 3 days a week and every week, a few hours before the visit, a message is received that the gallery will be closed due to maintenance.

This is a largely unknown gem of a gallery. The art collection is wide ranging and nicely displayed. Some very well known pictures. Lots of representation of the City of London of course. It supports Smartify. First class loo and cloak rooms. An ruins of the Roman amphitheatre in the basement. Hosts interesting exhibitions as well. Main gallery is free - exhibitions sometimes charge. Some days tours my qualified City of London tour guides are available and recommended.

The exhibition is quite small and the atmosphere is magical on the top floor where there are the remains of an ancient Roman amphitheater. The guide was very nice to accompany us and explain things about the amphitheater. Admission is free and the visit time is around 30 minutes.

Free art gallery in the heart of the City. Fragment of the Roman amphitheatre in the basement which is fascinating. Art work is mainly London based and Victorian. The building is an excellent modern space where the pictures are well displayed.

The Guildhall gallery has a good collection of paintings, mostly with a London theme, but the highlight is the Roman amphitheatre in the basement. This was discovered when the gallery was under construction and its remains are amazing to see. A real treat for a free museum.

Surprisingly little known but great and varied art gallery - perfect for a City lunch break but also well worth a visit for tourists in the area, especially the underground remains of the Roman amphitheatre.

It was just looking for the entrance.

It was just looking for the entrance.
There is a beautiful, large square in front of the building. The guildhall itself was closed.
Under the building of the Artgallery (access via the heritage wing) is a small excavation.
There was an exhibition about Victorian paintings and an exhibition about symmetry, a designer of tiles, William de Morgan.
Nice to have seen, but do not walk too much for it.

This elegant building completed in 1999 is an exercise in understated top-drawer craftsmanship and a showcase for The Corporation of London's permanent art collection, exhibitions and Roman era ruins.
Here find exceptional quality and civility.
This admirable endeavour offering free admission is undoubtedly worth your time and effort.
A memorable outing.

This gallery is in a wonderful place, a kind of urban oasis in La City: the Guildhall Yard.

Two surprises await inside this gallery of free entrance: a collection of works where pearls abound in a calm and intimate painting and the vestige of the Roman Amphitheater that so many centuries ago was the center of entertainment of the ancient Roman Londinium.

For those who understand English, free guided tours of 45 minutes are offered three times a week in which volunteer guides tell the story of a selection of paintings. Schedules and days are on the gallery's website.

It's worth it to get lost inside this place for a while! I recommend it!

It's a beautiful place whether you come for an exhibition or other function. Helpful and friendly staff. Smart loos. No cafe and very small shop, but their exhibitions are always interesting. You can see the Roman remains too, and their permanent art displays have something for everyone. At present they have on display the original Magna Carta, the later edition. Very impressive. Be prepared for a bag search on entry, but with politeness and a smile.
