did not feel that the whole experience was worth the money we paid, definitely not a 4* hotel

Amazing! Great food friendly staff clean and facicities were great! Me and my partner would definitely recommend and would come here again
It was very nice would recommend it to anyone we went for afternoon tea the lady who was on duty was brilliant she looked after us all afternoon
Pleasant staff,,,,, run on a tight budget which doesn't allow much for maintenance
Very nice place but my crazy girlfriend got leery and we had to leave.
Very nice. Pool was good too. Double bed was just two beds pushed together so sleep wasn't great.
Only stopped for a drink and a snack. Food awful and over priced
Average best western hotel....service was good though
Very poor bar food and chaotic quality of the restaurant staff, not their fault as they were not trained properly.
Cold food, poor bar service, not really wheel chair friendly.
I don't like leaving poor reviews and I am so sorry that I have too. We do not complain normally but I felt that I needed to write this review.
We stayed for a long weekend with aging parents, one in a wheel chair. We were all looking forward to a weekend away of relaxing and eating!
First the plus points. All of our rooms where clean and warm enough. The breakfast was very nice and they served the food on hot plates. More of that later.
Bad points.
Wheel chair access.
If you have someone in a wheel chair it's impossible to get from your room to the bar to eat without carrying the wheel chair with the person sat in it up and down stairs. The first night we ate in the restaurant and the waiter watched us lift the chair up two sets of steps to get in. When we asked where the toilets were we directed to them. We then had to lift the wheel chair again over two sets of steps to get to the toilets and them back up the steps to get back. At the end of the evening we had to lift the wheel chair again. The funny thing was the next day we found the way into the restaurant without having to use the stairs. Why did the waiter not point that out the day before?
As far as we could work out we couldn't get to the bar (the only warm public area), without having to lift the wheel chair with the person in it. Management please spend a day in a wheel chair in your hotel. You say that you are wheel chair friendly but the reality is you are not.
Food
Over two nights we had to send food back because it was cold.
The food that was not cold was served on very cold plates, you know what I mean, plates straight of a cold cupboard. This meant the food that wasn't cold when it arrived at the table was cold by the time you got half way through eating it.
Short staffed
The serving staff were under pressure. This meant that we kept having to remind them of things. Could we have spoons for the sweats, could we have the port that came with the cheese, could we have a knife. Our curry with rice came as curry and chips.
The food itself was ok, just cold. It was served by staff that were running all over the place.
We had order teas at 11am on Sunday morning. We were told my a staff member that we had to wait 15 minutes because they were restocking. The teas did eventually turn up. We were not surprised to found that our tea cups etc where still on the table at 10:30pm. They had just been left there all day.
Would we stay there again? No.
My advice is there are a lot better places to stay in the area.
This was a lovely hotel. Staff were very helpful and keen to tell you of places of interest to visit. The food was lovely and freshly cooked to order. The hotel had a games room that would keep young and old amused. The pitch and putt was ideal to while a away some time of an evening.
Very nice pool but dated rooms and the sauna had a cold draft...
Tired, featureless and the afternoon tea is bought in basic supermarket rubbish.
This hotel is well looked after has friendly staff. Our room was very big as we were upgraded and very clean and well equipped. The breakfast was very tasty and good choices. We had dinner on both of the two nights we stayed and it was well worth it. Great menu and well cooked and presented. Can't fault this place. Covid safe too, easy parking and very picturesque and quiet location.
Excellent location, very good food, excellent service.
This was a lovely stay away from all the hustle and bustle. In beautiful grounds it's much bigger than it first seems.
Our room was a really good size with an extra large double bed, lots of natural light from 3 windows, really nice.
The bathroom was big as well with a large bath to relax in, complimentary toiletries were available to use.
There is also tea and coffee making facilities in the room and bottled water, all nice touches.
I also liked the
1 star and if there was a choice of zero. I would choose that.
Food was horrendous staff were not friendly apart from the one small guy behind the bar.
Lovely hotel in a beautiful location needs a bit of a refurb in fitness/pool areas
Comfy rooms and good food with a nice pool/sauna & steam room.
Nice friendly helpfully staff....good food and a great location sandwiched between Skiddaw mountain n bassenthwaite lake
Visited for a meal whilst staying a few miles down the road. Have to say the food was excellent and decently priced. Service couldn't be faulted and wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
Great location good food and friendly staff would definitely recommend
The facilities here are good. The public areas are nice. Some of the rooms are a little dated but clean and comfortable. There is a safe in the room and a hairdryer. Bathrooms have updated fittings. Good TV on the wall and tea and coffee making facilities. There was a fan too which was welcome. The bar area was nice and we sat in the gardens in the sunshine which was lovely. Food was very good a nice selection and daily specials. Service was quick and they are currently using a booking system due to the pandemic. The bar did not open until 5 pm when we stayed but we sat outside with our wine and enjoyed the sunshine. Breakfast was also good with all the usual options . The staff here are super. They go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. I couldn't fault them and they are all so hard working and friendly.
Great service brilliant food arrived after Sunday dinner was done but still accommodated us
Good location for Bassenthwaite and Lake District. Remarkable value for August holiday. Pub meals tasty. staff attentive and helpful. Garden a nice area to have a drink and watch the sunset. Lovely room.
Hotel in a lovely setting decor is a little tired looking but good facilities and would definately stay there again
Food was awful. Staff were friendly and hotel was average.
Excellent breakfast but dinner portions could have been a bit more generous, had I known I would have ordered a side. saying that, it was very tasty. Room was excellent.
Great hotel, access with kit was a mission stairs like a escher painting.
Great hotel in a handy location for the north lakes.
Breakfast and room service very good.
Staff friendly and helpful.
Stayed at the Castle Inn for 3 nights from Tuesday November 1. The staff were all very helpful & friendly. The room was very pleasant with a good wifi signal. The leisure club was clean & a pleasure to use. The breakfast was very enjoyable & a good choice available but I cannot comment about the restaurant as we did not not eat other meals in the hotel. Overall a very pleasant stay & I will be returning there next time I want to stay in that area.
Nice place and friendly staff, they were a bit rushed though as there only seemed to be two of them. Food was very hit and miss for the price. Portion size on mains were fine but quality varied, an example browned onion rings with uncooked onion in them (oil too hot). Desserts very expensive for portion size and coffee very small compared to cost, there is an issue when costa/starbucks are significantly cheaper by size. Oh and their cheesecake was more a deconstructed cheesecake spread over a plate so its arival was quite a shock to my friend. I would return for drinks as beer was fine and fairly priced.... but maybe give the food a miss.
Brilliant staff, friendly relaxed atmosphere. They couldnt have been more helpfull.great hotel and base camp for travelling the lakes.
Food portions small expensive and hardly any English staff. Afternoon tea was not worth the money bread was stale
Excellent service, food & value for money. Staff were excellent
We've just spent another couple of lovely nights at the Castle Inn, near Keswick. Again the staff and breakfasts were amazing. Roll on our next break and hope to avoid the blizzards which curtailed our stay.
Fantastic location! Great rooms! Superb service! Should be five stars!!!
Very beautiful comfy rooms. Food lovely. Leisure facilities Good
Fantastic place. Beautiful spot fab for getting about. Bar staff was fantastic at their job.. Wil he back. Xxx
Beautiful meal, lovely staff and very doggie friendly. Food to die for!!
I really enjoyed staying here the staff were really friendly and welcoming. I stayed in Room 70 it was great bcos it was across from reception and there wasn't any other rooms next to it. The area is very peaceful and scenic and the bed was so comfortable to sleep in. I went for a swim in the leisure centre it was nice although they don't have a Jacuzzi. Breakfast wasn't great but the food in the restaurant was. I would defo visit in the future
Nice hotel. Comfortable and quiet good was a disappointment as we were vegan and vegetarian and they didn't cater for either.
Good location. Excellent food. Let down by the bed! Mattress was at least 10cm lower in the middle than the edges and should have been replaced years ago.
Great food and very pleasant and helpful staff. Unfortunately not well located for guests without their own transport.
Very high standard hotel. Great staff, great food, lovely rooms. Poorly let down by lack of kerb appeal. Lacking colour, flower beds, pots etc. Don't let that put you off. Beautiful gardens behind.
Nice location and nice if pricy breakfast, however unhelpful rules - unable to book single night until last minute. Dated room decor and uncomfortable mattress as well as unexpected charge for Travelcot, which had seen better days. Wouldn't stay again.
Great stay in a comfortable hotel in gorgeous surroundings. Friendly staff.
Great hotel with excellent facilities including a decent pool, games room, conference room. Breakfast areas well lit with nice views of the mountains. It has a huge carpark and a pub in the same premises which serves nice foid.Pretty good value for money overal,id recommend the castle inn but I would say during warmer months then book early.
Location is very good. Staff where attentive. Bar drinks a little expensive. Overall a very nice hotel I would stay again
Short stay. Excellent accommodation, together with good food & service.
Visited here with our dance club. Lovely meal followed by an afternoon of dancing in a large reception room with a a good dance floor. Would definitely go there again.
Food was ok, drinks were reasonably priced, the pool is good but no-one was stopping extra people jumping in, which is against their own covd policy.
The building is a bit tired (there is wallpaper literally held on by bluetack and drawing pins in places) and it was cold in the public areas. Service was slow but not because of the staffs efforts, they were all working max effort, there just weren't enough of them on.
Very old hotel. Poor quality of everything. Nothing has been done since the 80s.
Called for a sandwich and drinks, everyone welcoming. The entire place was clean with a good ambiance.
Will call again.
Pleasant hotel in a lovely location, spa facilities ok, let down by atrocious meal in the restaurant.
First impression was that the hotel needed a coat of paint and that the furniture was pretty old. However, the room was clean and the bed very comfortable. The food was excellent, but they had run out of non alcoholic beer, which meant we went into keswick for the evening instead of staying in the hotel.
Great afternoon and evening, nice bar and good food. Pool, sauna and steam room....comfortable room. What more can you want....
Friendly efficient staff...
The hotel was perfect but staff were very unhelpful when we tried to book a table for dinner. All space was booked because if covid and they would even make us a sandwich to eat in our room. The hotel is a 15 minutes drive to Keswick so for our 10 year anniversary we had no dinner. Room service needed to be booked 24 hours in advance. We asked in the afternoon for a table in the evening but they would not accommodate us .
Lovely hotel with great facilities and exceptional staff. Food was very good. Very enjoyable stay.
Gorgeous super here chicken burger with sweet potato fries too...bit of a wait but worth it.
Lovely hotel, with pool, sauna and steam room, had a lovely afternoon tea here. This place has lovely views, and is close to a lake to have a nice walk round.
Nice hotel with nice meals although same menu each night. Spa centre looked a little tired in places but was perfectly suitable
Terrible food. Very poor/slow service. Won't be going back. Room in poor state. More like 1star b&b.
The sandwiches on our afternoon were abit dry. The only choice for vegetarian was cheese and pickle. The room we were sat in wasnt really suitable for afternoon tea, it was like they'd just thrown a few tables and odd chairs/sofas together in a room that wasnt used for anything and decided they do afternoon tea in there.
This hotel is in a fabulous location with stunning scenery all around. It is a little dated and therefore not such a special experience as we were hoping for. Good breakfast but evening meal a little pub like.
This hotel gets better on each visit. I love the leisure facilities and the food is superb.
cleaning needs to be stepped up, we found previous occupants clothing in our room, pieces of foam in swimming pool area which remained foe 3 days and food debris on dinning room carpet from previous sitting. We had to book swimming pool, but there was no supervision, so when we came to use the pool it was already over capacity by guests who had not booked. When we complained to the reception they checked the figures and told us that the other guests had been told to vacate, 1/2 an hour later we gave up on our swim.
