The American Hotel, Amsterdam Review

Friendly staff and beautiful building! Bathrooms were a bit outdated but bed was very comfortable and the view is lovely. I had a view to the square and was surprised at how quiet it was.

Stopped here for a meal. Very interesting hotel with impressive past quest list. Highly recommend.

This hotel just reopened as Hard Rock Hotel. Hotel is located in Amsterdam goes. Easy to reach by public transport. However, the hotel does not give a Hard Rock Hotel feeling. It lacks the vibe and make the quality / price ratio also very lopsided. Unfortunately.

Had a very nice evening in the modern bar of this beautiful, still in Jugendstil-clothed Hotel. It still exudes class, such as the furniture, the paintings, dozens of photos of worldwide celebrities, a beautiful bunch of flowers and waiters in beautiful corporate clothing. It belongs to the Leidseplein in Amsterdam! I love it!

Lovely hotel in central Amsterdam but slightly dated decor

Very well located hotel in the heart of Amsterdam center (not red light district), for quality tourists and business trips. Beautiful rooms, fun bar, beautiful architecture and decor, nice restaurant.
One star missing for bad quality WiFi and construction work in the lobby.

Good hotel, but it's expensive. I booked a room with canal view and they gave me a room with no view at all, just some pipes and other windows. No parking available, just a third party one, at 120 meters away from the hotel.

Absolutely beautiful, stunning views. It snowed while we stayed there the most picturesque views will definitely stay there again. The staff are amazing and very helpful.

Amazing location..... Great and professional service from the lobby to room service to restaurant and bar. However, the fact that it's an old building it had some issues in the room i was in. A dripping sound from outside of my room keep me awake the whole night.

Simply MEGA! Historic, stylish address. Staff is very friendly. Absolute 1A location. Unfortunately, not all of the exhibits were on view during my stay. Thus, more anticipation for the next time!

The hotel is mid renovation and pleased to be staying here and trying one of the new modern fab rooms. It will look amazing when it is done and the new lobby is ready. The staff are superb and look forward to staying here again.

Interesting architecture, intriguing bar, small and inconvenient rooms. Not a great value for money but clean and near the museums..

A great stay, a lot of history and a excellent restaurant.

We only had lunch at the restaurant. Food was delicious but service was slow. If you are not in a rush you should stop by and try the soups.

Friendly service, small but tasty card. A place like you won't find much in the center. Nice place to sit and just outside Leidseplein. They also have good (red) wine here.

Great for a short stay. Close to the local attractions just have a bit of travelling to do from Amsterdam Centraal/Airport. But the canal cruise boats right outside the door was fab!

Can't say anything else we had a blast. Beautiful suite and the staff are very attentive. The atmosphere is a nice mix between high end service, rock n roll and slightly Amsterdam, exactly what we like. An extra bonus are the great rockstar items on display. Again, nice atmosphere and personal service. I have lived in this city for over 20 years now and I am happy to have discovered this place. An absolute must for locals and tourists at a top location in Amsterdam.

Hotel is situated at the heart of downtown. Tram connectivity is across the road. One side of the hotel faces canal. Excellent nearby places for an evening walk.

Well situated, with a nice bar and restaurant attached. You can step outside to the leidseplein and also to a canal boat tour. Would definitely stay again.

The location was by the canal and had a great view. The food was top quality but slightly expensive. The service was quick and polite and overall a great experience.

Breakfast is now very Europeanized. Might as well drop the "American" from the name.

I'll begin with checking. I pre-booked the room for me and my brother he said he stayed there before and liked it so much he wanted to stay at American Hotel again so I agreed to try it. The staff was just lovely really helpful if I should give them a grade they all passed with flying colors. Sometimes you can notice that the staff seem to be bothered with your questions, not these guys they where the silver lining of the stay. I chose a deluxe room with a double bed it was very comfortable and big enough for two guys (common he's my brother) not to bother one another. The safe in the room was really easy to use and I felt secure to leave passport keys cash and other valuables when I left the room. The buffet breakfast was very nice a good variety. Great coffee and I think 6+ different kinds of juice even my favorite, carrot juice I really like juice . The room was of etage style and had a small balcony overlooking one of the canals.There was a approx 46" TV in the living/relax area and around 24" TV at the second floor where the bedroom. Bathroom was fresh with bath and shower. Overall 5 stars.

Hotel is in a great location, nearby to many shops and restaurants. Rooms a little bit small very high quality. The hotel bar and restaurant are both very good as well with excellent staff!

Nice stylish clean hotel I can recommend to those who come to Amsterdam

Where to start? I have nothing but positive reviews. The hotel is situated in a very active part of the city. There is a variety of entertainment venues around, as well as restaurants, but the restaurant (Cafe American) was fine. If you order breakfast one night in advance, you can pay the discounted rate. Sure, some people might not like this and they would rather see breakfast as being included in the rate, but it is worth it. The breakfast was fantastic.

The room: it was not a disappointment at all. Black, purple, and red, not exactly my choice of colors but it was great. The room was so comfortable. The bed was king sized and the balcony was the pinnacle of the room experience. Nothing better than waking up and going out (in the cold) and drinking a coffee or tea on the balcony, watching the city wake up. I originally booked a classic room but upgraded to a deluxe with a balcony. It wasn't that much to be honest, and the staff were flexible. They were very friendly and no attitude like you might find at other hotels in Amsterdam.

*Note: don't even think about smoking. This is a non-smoking hotel. I could smell cigarettes, and other "stuff" being smoked indoors. Have some consideration for the other guests, and you won't get hit with a heavy cleaning bill.

Also, the gym downstairs in the basement was a great addition. The city trams # 1, 2 and 5 stop right outside the hotel, so this made for an excellent strategic point from which to see the city. There was some construction in the area but to be honest it didn't stop me from getting a good nights rest. Maybe because it was done in the day time when I was out. Either way, this has been by far the greatest experience I have had in staying in Amsterdam. I would most definitely stay here again.

It's like coming Home. The American and her excellent service is warm, welcoming and friendly. We spend pre dinner time at Bar American. Thank you Rogier for your warm hospitality, you're a bartender that put a big smile on our faces! My next stop is Paris and on the way back to Los Angeles we definitely stop over at Bar American. I recommend this place. It has nice indoor sitting and when you're lucky the sun will come out and you'll enjoy the most fascinating terrace in the city. While enjoying the gorgeous fountain you'll have so much fun People watching. The American, if you didn't visit this place, you haven't been to Amsterdam.

Amazing location, so many eating and entertainment options within walking distance. Right on the tram line, and your close enough but also far enough away from all the loud crazy places. We were able to stop back by our room as we traveled from the south side art galleries and historic walls to the north evening night life which was great.

Book regular room and got a huge suite on the top floor with huge balcony. The building itself is historic (100+ y.o.). It's interesting to just look at the architecture and interior of the hotel itself, though the room is newly renovated. Good location as well, walking distances to everything, and quiet at night.

For years a great place for a cup of coffee, lunch, and occasional dinner. But especially the pleasant bar - where, to our surprise, people still know us but still know what we drink and what we take from the small menu.

It is a hotel with good location and well connected. I had not visited Amsterdam for a long time and I do not know if the prices are all very high. This in particular seemed very expensive in relation to quality price. It does not have good soundproofing and bothers the bustle of the street and also the neighbors if they are not educated, as happened to me. It's nice the restaurant, art-deco, the best of the hotel. The breakfast is not bad but beware! They offered us other coffees (cappuccino in my case) and they do not warn you that it is an extra that appears on your daily bill; It is more the lack of consideration than the amount of them. In general I was disappointed.
