Beautiful location and attractive with nice ambiance and motivated staff.

The location is really nice, food exceptional, and the service is top notch. The American Hotel live up its class.
But as all high class places, the bill can be skyrocket high.

Excellent place and staff, they even have a dedicated bathroom for baby!

Friendly staff, clean comfortable room and close to everything.

Perfect place in Amsterdam center, service is very good and has a lovely restaurant but they're not able to customize the menu for gluten free or other changes.

Very nice and good bed, great air conditioning and very nice reception.

Getting into the hotel is inconvenient if you carry suitcases

Nice place at a nice spot in Amsterdam, rooms are beautiful but sound proofing is pretty bad. You can hear people talking outside, train and workers very very easily.

Otherwise this is clean and beautiful with a good service.

Very close to the center, a 10 minute walk from the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum but also a 15 minute walk from Dam Square.
The streets to the right of Leidseplein contain a multitude of excellent restaurants.
The room was always clean and fragrant, with very kind and polite staff. The beds, king size, really comfortable and excellent.

A different luxury cafevin the centre of Amsterdam. Friendly service, quality cafe.

Fantastic hotel. Great breakfast. Price quality right. Perfect location. Both transfer from the airport to the hotel, direct and economical. Everything can be done on foot. Departure point with boats to navigate the canals, right in the center where there are restaurants for food and at all prices. Tourist bus 5 minutes. Lovely canal views. Very good attention from the staff

In The Fault in Our Stars (the book), Hazel and Gus stay at Hotel De Filosoof (literally Hotel Philosopher ), and they do in the film, too, but the exterior you see is the American Hotel on Leidseplein. Hotel De Filosoof, at the time of writing, has been closed for quite a while.

Great clean rooms and great sleep. Some things may be a bit dated but they all taste that way.

Poor hopeless rooms need to be changed constantly ugly rooms dirty walls stinks their system is constantly breaking down hopeless service

Nice room and great breakfast, but had some issues with the service (restaurant and housekeeping) and cleanliness. The hotel was under renovations during my visit, which didn't help things.

Always nice Amsterdam cozy and Horeca where you are a guest. Of course with the real American filet. Highly recommended!

The food is great. The decorations are wonderful and it's located near the Vondelpark. It has a perfect atmosphere.

A bit overpriced for what you get. We have had better service and comparable rooms in lesser hotels.

Splendid establishment, ideal location on Leidseplein, near museums, parks and restaurants.
Nonetheless a bit expensive and furnishings in the suites a bit dated for my taste.

This is a very nice and beautiful hotel, with very friendly and helpful staff and beautiful art deco throughout the hotel. It has a good restaurant Cafe Americain, and a nice bar/lounge which has an outside covered area. In the summer I can only guess is opened and beautiful. You can sit and enjoy a coffee, tea or drink. It has a beautiful square/plaza in the front with a water fountain, just lovely. My room was located in the back of the hotel, which I didn't find to be so much of a problem until the New Year Eve night when an unknown man knocked on my door. The man demanded I opened the door because he needed a pen to write. I reported the incident to the main desk and they indicated that they would look into it. The hallway to the room was was a long, deep hallway with some steps to go up in between, after this incident, I thought the room location was not a good destination for two ladies traveling alone. (room 12). However, I must say it was a very clean room, with very nice and modern furniture. The Room was a little small and dark- need better lighting. However must also say it was average size compared to a hotel room in NYC or Paris. We only went there at night to shower and sleep, so it wasn't so
bad for us. The bed was comfortable and that
was all we needed. We were given bathrobes,
slippers, toiletries and a small bottle of
champagne as a welcome gift. They made us feel welcomed and comfortable! I think they could do better with the lighting in the room. Otherwise, The Americain is centrally located, the airport shuttle stops in front of the hotel and 3 of the main trams (1,2,5) stop across the street in the Leidesplein. It was just great. Because of the poor lighting and location of the room cannot give it a five. Aside from everything else, this is a 4 star European hotel, that compared to other hotels in Europe, exceeded my expectations. I have seen worse in other European cities. I would stay again the next time I visit amsterdam! I loved the location, the neighborhood, the accesibility to this hotel via transportation, it is a beautiful hotel inside and it has all I need when traveling!

My entire floor was just a big messy construction site. Room was bigger and nicer than expected. But the noise level and amount of dust and dirt was pretty bad. The didn t warn me in advance...

Very nice art deco restaurant in the center of Amsterdam with delicious cakes. Recommended for lunch.

Mice will come out. I'll identify the customers. It's a restaurant that has a long history but doesn't fit.
I went there twice and felt unpleasant at all, so there is no third time.

My encounter with mice in the restaurant (it passed right between my feet) ruined my appetite and how I was treated by the staff was somewhat discriminating (they skipped me twice and served guests who came much later than me).
There will be no third time.

A great hotel. It has got some really nice rooms but they are a bit pricey. Breakfast it ok, nothing more. It close to a lot of attractions an pubs and restaurants.

Honestly, the location of the hotel is very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, service, above, expected, but, it is our work, Abrajid, close to all buses, tram, restaurants, and next to it, a water canal, you can catch a boat around the city and return you to the hotel.

Very good location, being in a quieter area and at the same time close to everything. Spacious rooms, very comfortable bed and with balcony. Reception staff super polite, helpful and helpful. One thing that happened, and I'm sure it's not standard, was that the cleaning crew one day left a trash bag tossed in the middle of our room and the balcony, where there's an ashtray, just threw the butts on the floor. But the next day they cleaned and left no garbage bags.

It is simply the best hotel that I have ever stayed in Amsterdam . Room, location and food combination is adding up and creates the perfection...

Certainly much nicer on the outside than on the inside. I would not select this again. Although a great room and clean just not what I was expecting.

The rooms are very dated and need to be renovated. There are also way too many stairs through out the hotel, making it hard to get luggage to and from your room.

Small room with a very small balcony. Even I have asked to extend with one day my stay there, they have ignored my request and thet have responded too late... negative. Even we have paid from the beginning, the hotel have asked additional 50 Euros - deposit... maybe because we leave in Africa. The American girls that have made "bread deposit" from breakfast in their bags... they haven't paid 50 Euros deposit. Even we have requested on Booking rooms with balcony, the hotel have charged 10 Euros additional for one person balcony... small and tinny. Not enough towels for 2 persons. No slippers. And so on. This is our experience in Amsterdam. A room of 300 USD/night taxes included. 4* hotel. The positive reviews is for breakfast and cleaning services only.

Hampshire American is in a great location for a couple looking for a good weekend. lively square just outside with team links back to central station only 2 minutes walk away. rooms are good and well equipped with all you will need. some overlook the square or canal but door look over the fire escape. Bar read good but not open until 5pm. Didn't eat here as too many other places to try. I would stay here again.

Place very beautiful but very slow service and not up to

There was 5 of us and all we wanted was to have a coffee. However, they did not let us in and consistently changed their story of why we couldn't enter. Possibly because we aren't wearing suits? Or is it because they are rasict? Either way if you want to feel wanted, don't go there and support their predujice behaviour.

Overall the American hotel is a good choice for Amsterdam. The restaurant and bar are comfy and food is well priced for the excellent quality. Our first room was freezing cold over night so they moved us without argument. The current referb is a style I don't think is suited to the hotel. The red and black designs with dark carpets and bedding gives the rooms and hallways a feeling of being in a dungeon. All that black paint was really depressing. Otherwise the beds are comfy and the bathrooms clean and well appointed. It's such a great location I would book again when we visit Amsterdam again.

It is the best place for me to have coffee, ice cream or a casual meal. Its large windows, its Art Deco style, its decadent atmosphere with charm. The views of the square and the fountain, great.

Good location. The staff was fantastic. Rooms were decent sized by European standards. Pretty good breakfast every morning, but best to arrive early.

Used for a business trip so literally arrived, slept, showered and left but the place is cool. Anywhere that has a recording studio in the basement is OK with me

I went close to closing looking for a table for 2 and felt very welcomed (would not recommend you do though because all service staff world wide hate it)
