AVOID THIS HOTEL! After 38 years of loyalty, goodbye American hotel.
a shame !

No more buffet breakfast As before! It was royal.
I have been going to this hotel since the age of 12 with my parents and grandparents.
Now the service is done at the table it is endless 20 minutes before someone takes the order and after 20 minutes of waiting. The ridiculous and expensive portions.
And pb of understanding with the staff
Who even speaking English brings you back unordered dishes.
Don, it's over for me!
Totally unjustified value for money.
Impacts on the right and left
On the bathroom furniture protruding screws.
Cleanliness blah blah!
Go elsewhere there are hotels nearby ...
After 38 years of loyalty goodbye
American hotel.

One of the nicest places I stayed. There are a variety of different rooms in fair but legitimate price ranges offered. Upscale ambience and very central to the city center.
The rooms are all really very upscale. The food in the in-house restaurant convinces night after night again and again. The staff is nice and accommodating. Really every day every wish is fulfilled.

The hotel is in a really nice location, easy to get there from the airport (the express bus leaves you really close to the hotel)

The rooms are quite old and there is only one elevator so, depending on the time of the day, you will need to wait a while :)

The single platter breakfast is not worthy

Take a moment for the interior and the atmosphere .. am glad that such establishments remain intact. Dramatic location (both positive and negative). High quality of the dishes and good, professional service.

Hotel American (no longer a Hampshire Hotel) is a well known historical hotel in Amsterdam, together with Krasnapolsky one of the first luxury hotels in the City. Still very worthwhile with refurbished rooms in red and black themes with good touches such as a Nespresso coffee machine. Staf very friendly. And of course the historical Cafe Americain is part of the hotel, very nicely renovated in the original style and serving very decent dinner.

You experience a unique emotion, it seems to be inside a film. The high but sustainable costs make the dream reachable. It is located in the center of the square and under the Christmas life festivals it is filled with bright balls about 15 / 20cm wide; it looks like a fairy tale and you expect magic at any moment.

Hotel - Great looking building at a good location....

Hotel - Great looking building at a good location. Outside it appears pompous, inside is rather simple and rooms could be updated.

Location - Plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. Boats stop directly in front (during my stay there happened to be no cruises available at this stop). 30 minute walk to Central Station.

Entry / Exit - You will have to carry your luggage up 7 or 8 stairs to get into the hotel lobby from the street. There are multiple entrances but all have stairs and there is NO ONE TO ASSIST with your luggage at the doors. Whether you're checking in or out, looking for a taxi, carrying the luggage and getting a ride is solely up to you.

Check In - Fairly quick. The agent provided me with a map of the city and advised on the currently available to-do's. He advised me to attend a cruise that departs from the stop in front of the hotel but when asked follow up questions, such as, are any refreshments available, or, do they accept credit cards, the answers weren't available.

Lobby - small and simple, the check in desk is only big enough for 2 agents. There is a tiny seating area, not a place you would be spending your time at. If you like to socialize in a nicely decorated, cozy lobby, this may not cut it.

Up one flight of stairs is a business area with a few computers, outlets and even phone chargers available to hotel guests. Big plus.

Room - ... and they say NYC has tiny hotel rooms.. I was in NYC just two months before being in Amsterdam, and, let me tell you, they lie! This hotel room was by far the tiniest little room I have ever stayed at, or even seen. Room # 123 was ok for 1 guest. 2 would not be comfortable.

There was very little space in the room. A small desk by the wall offered a lamp with dim lighting and with only european outlets, none that would be universal and no USB outlets. The 2nd table in the room which had one chair by it, blocking the walkway to the window, was used as luggage rack, since that was nowhere to be found.
My 20" rolling carry-on barely fit through the space between bed and the wall.

The heating was a little tricky but thankfully they provide instructions and how to get it going. With no central air, the radiator (yup) takes a while to heat up and it takes a little longer for the room to warm up.

The bed, pillows and covers were all clean and comfortable. The carpet had several stains and looked worn-out.

Bathroom - One of the two large towels was DIRTY. Not sure if they hadn't changed it or the stains weren't coming off. If the latter, they should get some new towels. Otherwise the bathroom had the basics available, hair dryer, body wash, body lotion, tissues, and clothes line.

View and Noise - room 123 offers a view of the fountain in front of the hotel, very nice. With windows and balcony doors shut, I could hear the street noises, it wasn't unbearable.

Service - Throughout the stay I approached the agents with inquiries twice. Twice they were RUDE. I was misinformed about getting to the airport, when I later inquired about alternatives I was treated with an attitude, "how dare I ask...".

Restaurant - large and beautifully decorated, at least during the holiday season. Breakfast buffet cost $19 per person and consisted largely of eggs and sugar cereal. For some, that is all you need and want. The options are limited, especially for someone health-conscious or someone who simply wants a variety of options. A la carte option was not presented.
I did not try the restaurant for lunch or dinner but the decor popped even more at night.

Going from Schiphol to the hotel was ok, first took a train to Lalylaan, then a tram that stops just blocks away from the hotel. The cost was just above 5euro.
Going back to Schiphol, as I learned from a very helpful waitress at a restaurant down the street, and what the hotel staff failed to assist with, was even simpler. Walk 5 minutes toward the Marriott hotel across the canal, take bus #197. 5euro and 30 minutes later you are directly at Schiphol, no stopovers.

Nothing special, I felt the room expensive for what it was. The room and bathroom were nice but very small for the price and quite dark. Overall I felt quite clostrophobic. The bed was big and there was a Nesspresso coffee machine (no fresh milk though). We did not eat at the hotel due to other reviews indicating that the food was better elsewhere. There are many great places to have breakfast within 10 minutes walk. Would not stay again, would look for better value.

The hotel is well located just by the centre and near the Vondelpark but the hotel itself is very tired and run down. My room was clean despite the stains on the carpet and staff were pleasant but I struggle to recommend despite the relatively cheap rates.
