Good sized room with every comfort and a large ensuite bathroom with full sized bath and shower over. Pleasant and obliging staff. Wonderful food served. A six course taster menu for dinner was a real treat. Shall certainly be visiting again and take advantage of the swimming pool and spa. Lovely surroundings.

We stayed at Thainstone House as party of a friends birthday celebrations. The 6 course taster menu was really lovely, couldn't fault it.
The bedrooms, breakfast and staff were where the hotel fell short. The bedroom had no tea\coffee facilities or water available (apparently this was located in a chest of drawers but no information was available in our room other than a leaflet promoting their Christmas stays) Our door also didn't lock from the outside .....it was open when we arrived and we tried to lock it but even without insterting the key the door could be opened from the hotel corridor...definately was a faulty lock. To which we notified staff of straight away but nothing was done about it so we felt a bit insecure leaving our room unlocked for the duration of our stay but had no choice. My partner was able to return to the room and enter without the use of a key several times. The levels of staff were basic for how busy the hotel seemed to be, not one senior member of staff around other than whilst during our meal (this was perhaps how our room door was never fixed or looked into). If a manager had been on duty they surely would have been notified of the faulty lock by a member of staff.
The breakfast service was extremely slow, with all members of staff showing signs of stress at being unable to cope. However the breakfast was very good.

Just had the best morning of massage, facial and lunch. Great start to the weekend. Highly recommend Hattie at the spa. I felt very much at ease and am definately feeling the benefits of the treatments I had. The light lunch afterwards was perfect too. Will definately be back.

Absolutely stunning hotel! Other grand, old hotels I have stayed in have felt like they have needed some TLC however this hotel was decorated beautifully. Our room was a little on the small side but had everything we needed for our two night stay. The breakfast was delicious and service was good. Glad we booked to have breakfast there.

Meal was truly brilliant, excellent service too! I mentioned briefly when we were booking our table a few nights ago that it was for my birthday, and the staff gave me a nice birthday treat of tablet and chocolate coated strawberries! An excellent end to my birthday, really made my day!

Reception not obvious upon entry, Rooms small and bathroom outdated, not maintained well. Late night disco in bar kept us up till one in the morning to which the hotel was powerless to get them to turn the music down, was told they where unaware there would be music when they took the booking. It was so bad you could feel the bedroom floor vibrating. After having complained about this three times I asked to speak to the manager and was told there was no manager on duty and no rooms available to move us. Smell of smoke in the corridors was put down to someone smelling of smoke even though several of us in that section could smell it really strongly. Pool water was strange and stung my eyes really badly for a long time, steps leading out of the pool area could not be used as that area had a hole in the surface. Hot tub had broken jet buttons. Many of the locks in spa area broken so had to leave clothes in unlocked. Did not have full set of cups for the tea in the room, lighting so poor could not see to put my makeup on, fire alarm went off with no one checking people where leaving the building plus ventilation in bathroom not working. Not worth the money. As I flew up especially for a wedding this made it a very unenjoyable part of the weekend. Waiting for Expedia to handle refund.

I came to this hotel in the hope of buying some vouchers for my good friends. The lady on duty was more than helpful. The hotel is situated in lovely secluded surroundings and close to the main A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road.

Unfortunately, we did have a slightly negative first impression as we were queuing to check in, as two young lads who were evidently in house guests, totally ignored the queue and walked straight past us to the reception desk, with no staff making any effort to ask them to wait in the queue. We had already been waiting for over 10 minutes to check in, due to a couple in front of us making a very lengthy booking, and this ate into our allocated gym time so we ended up getting less time than we had hoped in the gym as a result.
All of the staff were lovely, but I would like to give a special mention to the leisure staff. The girls were all very friendly and welcoming, and made everything very easy by explaining how each of our time slots worked for each facility. Our spa treatments were all lovely, and the girls were very considerate about preferences regarding areas to concentrate on or avoid.
Dinner was lovely, and came very promptly after we had ordered. Everything was presented beautifully and tasted great! Breakfast was also brilliant, and my eggs Benedict cooked perfectly!
The only real issue that we had was the fact that the bedroom walls were extremely thin and we could hear everything going on in the corridor and rooms next to us. This was not ideal at 1am, when the room above us was stomping about like a heard of elephants, and the room next to ours, with their bathroom directly behind where our bed was, decided to have a shower at stupid o'clock in the morning, followed by a very loud and lengthy argument of which we heard every word. This racket carried on for at least another 2 hours, so unfortunately none of us got a wink of sleep, making our relaxing break away slightly pointless. My mum also received a bill, which was posted under her door in the morning, despite the fact that we had informed reception on check in that our stay was all covered by a voucher, which we had provided them a copy of upon check in. This did however get rectified very quickly.
Overall, a great little break away, and I am sure we will be back again in the future

Our very first impression of Thainstone House was ...

Our very first impression of Thainstone House was witnessing another understandbly fustrated guest concerned she was just placed into an already in use room and had to change rooms. The staff member said she was new and apologised to her.We are patient individuals and were fine with waiting to check in of course, for her to fix the error before proceeding with our check in. Could you imagine being the guests involved though? Slightly concerning. We were placed in a very tiny box room at first with a very small high to the ceiling window which meant we had no natural light or view outside at all. Outside the room was loud with roudy wedding guests and getting prepped for the wedding we assumed taking place soon. We normally don't make a fuss however we poiltely asked if we could be moved. We were shocked to see this was the room we would be getting for the price we saved up for to stay here. They said it's likely thats the only room as there are two weddings this weekend however they will see what they can do. We waited for 30 minutes in the room in limbo waiting patiently for a call back from reception to which they called and said come to the desk to recieve a new set of keys to a new room and unfortunatly, the only room they have for us.We did appreciate we did now have a room with a window allbeit the view was the side of a building and we didn't get a bath like we requested when booking however we were thankful for the window. I was shocked to see black mould along the edging of the tile(have a picture) It was so loud with guests hanging out outside our door at times and we didn't a wink of sleep. We couldn't make use of the any of the hotels lounge areas for example as they were in full use, for example to buy a drink at the bar there was an overflow and no way of getting to the bar as it was packed with wedding guests. A band was playing in the entrance for example and the vibe was bar like and loud with few tipsy guests with one that my husband actually had to catch his fall!(Video proof! Not making this up)We REALLY needed this break "away" from Edinburgh to relax in a countryside setting and the spa facilities were another reason why we booked at Thainstone House. Woman's changing area was so dirty and covered in huge piles of wet dirty towels on the floor/ all seating areas and all lockers were broken so had to leave my personal items unlocked on display which left me feeling less secure.(have pictures)Pool was lovely however I did not return as the changing rooms were so messy my feet were covered in hair and dirt. There were a lack of team members to clean I suspect to compensate the large influx of wedding guests. We did let this lovely lady at spa check in know the lockers in the hotel shower rooms were broken to which she replied "Yes,unfortunately I know" with a dissapointed face which didn't leave us with confidence the lockers would be fixed for our stay or in the future for other people's stays. We felt like we were not valued guests. Having personal 12 years experience being a manager myself, I can't imagine this to be acceptable to you. This certainly isn't normal right? We were not happy with our dinner as it was cold and did not taste fresh and the breakfast was extremely expensive for what you can get it you have a dietary requirement.I'd appreciate team members relaying to the Manager If they haven't already as I'd have expected a response privately by now at this stage. Regrettably,if we had known there were two weddings to be taking place during our spa hotel visit we would have reconsidered those dates entirely as we said when booking we were flexible with dates. Although the hotel is appropriate for weddings as the main hotel itself is beautiful, we didn't realise our entire experience would end up being extremely compromised from the two weddings occurring. Feeling incredibly let down.

Very impressed with the staff, in particular on reception but also in the spa, the bar and the restaurant. Food very good too. Hotel itself is a little worn in places (the access road in particular, but also little things like our room door not locking properly and a blown light bulb) but in general the interior is lovely, typical of a big old Aberdeenshire country hotel. We certainly plan to return, both to stay and for the odd spa appointment.

Lovely place, we were very well taken care of by everyone in the staff, little hard to find the main entrance in the cold rainy night but we highly recommend this place if you are in town.
Rooms are well appointed and provided with all the amenities, excellent bar with a great selection of spirits, beer and wine... people complain that the place is old and outdated, but we and a lot of people think this is a great elegant and classy place ...

Would Love to be able to give a higher rating but based on this stay I struggled to give it 2 stars.

The setting is beautiful and the entrance to the Hotel sets a high expectation, that the room swiftly dissolved.
The surfaces were shabby looking and worn on both the dresser and bureau, there's a red wine stain by the bedside and most of the information booklets, including the remote control were grubby.
The bed was not comfortable due to wear and tear.
The bathroom has an ill fitting replacement toilet seat, a dripping tap, visible corrosion on the pipe under the tap and stained/corroded flooring underneath. The remainder of the bathroom flooring is stained or worn.
This is an Executive suite.
These issues were raised at checkout and noted by reception for maintenance to look into.
*Update: after 2 Months there was no offer of compensation or a good will gesture, simply a two word reply "Sorry Tom".
Not good enough.

Hi Mark, we came for afternoon tea in your great setting. However the sofa we sat on had holes and feathers poking out of the cushions. Basically it has seen better days. Afternoon tea was nice, can't fault the cakes or scones. Thr sandwiches were simple, I expecting something I can't easily make at home. Overall not the best value for money and a shame about the sitting area.

Went here for afternoon tea today, lovely food, what you would expect from afternoon tea. Staff were extremely helpful. Unlike other places we have been for afternoon tea they did not seem to be looking down their noses at us, as we are not exactly a 'posh' family. Price was very reasonable.

This hotel was lovely, clean rooms, friendly staff and comfy beds. It was also very quiet.
Only reason for knocking off a star is the swimming pool had sand on the bottom which wasn t cleaned up for the whole week we stayed there meaning you could only use 3/4 of the pool.
