I found Tartine just before noon on a Wednesday morning; like so many popular places in SF, it eschews notable signage, displaying a plain black sign with no lettering over tall windows. It was by chance I found it, but I'm very glad I did.

Though the pastries were tempting, I snapped up a slice of the ham and cheese quiche, and was very happy with my choice. The quiche was delicious. Balanced, texture and flavour-wise, the ham added a salty undertone that fit, but which didn't overwhelm the other flavours.

When I make quiche at home, it's often too soft (my baking curse continues!) but Tartine's doesn't suffer a similar fate. It's fluffy but not inconsequential, and made for a tasty, light lunch as I sat outside at one of their patio tables and watched the world slip past Guerrero and 18th.

Even mid-week, there were lines to contend with, but the staff were friendly and helpful, and the line moved pretty quickly. I'll be happy to return, and maybe indulge my sweet tooth the next time around!

Is this place tasty? Yes. Is it worth spending 30 minutes in line, and then not being able to find a table to sit and enjoy your food at? No. I know people who swear by it, but I am not one of them. My rating would be higher if I didn't have to wait and eat on a bench outside. The thing is that this is San Francisco and there are tons of places you can get good pastries at. Because of the trendiness of Tartine, I wouldn't bother.

Blown away! I am not much of a sweet tooth person but what we had offered more than just sweetness! Take for example the bread pudding. Always afraid it'll be too syrupy, overly sweet, mushy bread - but at Tartines? - great egg texture, bread was not overly soaked, had tasty buttery flavours and bananas that complemented perfectly with the pudding! Love love love it!

Never have I seen a bakery with croissants, pain aux chocolate and quiche as BURNT as I have here! Long wait, sat in a draft, expensive, wouldn't go back and don't know why burnt food gets such great reviews.

The most popular babery in San Francisco. Small place and a few tables inside and outside. Always long line but it was not that hard to get seats. There are many kind of breads. Lemon tart and eclair. Both were really great. Lemon cream tart was interesting . Also ordered coffee. It was good and soft coffee.

It is delicious. It is delicious even if I eat it as a man, and the women will be disheartened. If you park your coin on the street nearby, the parking fee is also cheaper (San Francisco).

I initially read about Tartine Bakery in Michael Pollan's new book "Cooked". Then, I read about it in July's Vogue (US). This lead me to believe that the universe wanted me to eat here. I mean, two different sources?!? Twist my arm, Universe.

Tartine was opened more than 10-years ago by Chad Robertson and his wife, Elisabeth Prueitt. Since then, they have opened Bar Tartine. Simply put, the bread they make is CELEBRATED. Robertson has even spelled out the recipe for it in one of his cook books, but most would rather buy the bread (it is fairly intimidating to see 38-pages dedicated to one bread recipe). At Tartine, they make about 250 loaves a day and they sell out. I got to Tartine just before selling began and it was an energetic environment, to say the least. You can buy a half or full-loaf, but you need to make your reservation three days in advance and pre-pay.

I did not place an advance order for the bread and ordered two croissants instead (I figured croissants would be more manageable in my hotel room). I made it to the counter just before there was a line out the door.

The Croque Monsieur looked amazing, but they also have other hot sandwiches like Humboldy Fog Goat Cheese and Pecorino & Almond. The kitchen stayed very busy to keep up with the demand for bread and sandwiches, but the line didn't get smaller; other people would just get into it.

While watching the gluten-filled mob, I kept over-hearing conversations that all seemed to start with: "when you are from the mission..." There is a lot of pride about being from this area and locals are particularly proud of Tartine. A place that sells breads and simple bakery items like this seems like a very San Franciscan idea and success story.

When I come back to the Bay Area, I will make an effort to make an advanced reservation for the bread. I am persuaded by the reviews, but also the croissants I bought were AMAZING. They were very large, delicious and I am 99.9% sure that my hotel cleaning lady ate one of them. Who could resist?

I always stop by this bakery when I am in the city. Anything you order is going to be wonderful. Their croissants are the absolute best! Only downfall is there is often a line out the door, but if you go between the breakfast rush and the lunch hour, sometimes you can walk right in!

Unfortunately, I came to this place without time. I had to catch a plane and there was too many people in line. This is a famous bakery that I wanted to try for years and I live in Costa Rica.
The smell was marvelous the pastry looked beautiful. I am sure it must be good but I can comment on it

Basically, I do not like bread and do not eat. I've seen everything passing by, but every time I'm in the deadline, I've got a lot of lines, so I've got some left over. I went a couple more times after that.

Bread was incredible - way better in my opinion than Acme and can t even be compared to Boudin. The pastries though - somehow I was expecting something better. Maybe it was also that we got there around 4PM and there was not really much to choose from.

I visited on a Friday afternoon with a relatively shorter line that made it just to the door. I ended up ordering the chocolate chip walnut cookie, pain au chocolat, and plain croissant. The cookie was relatively thin and crispy and reminded me of Florentine cookies. The pain au chocolat tasted delicious with good quality chocolate inside. Finally, the croissant is probably the best I have ever had with countless flaky layers and a savory, buttery flavor. I will be back next time I'm in SF.

I like this place but last time when I visited, I bought bunch of tartes including a macadamia chocolate tarte which I found a fish bone and white string that looks like hair.
So I'm pretty disappointed. But normally they have a good cakes and desserts.

I finally get to visit Tartine again since my last visit in 2013. I was so looking forward to my seasonal bread pudding. This time the bread pudding consist of raspberry, which I'm not too crazy about, and plum. It was still good but not the same heavenly experience I had from the last visit. I thought the pudding was watery that made the outer crust also watery. I also tried this morning bun. That almost blew my brain out. It was perfectly caramelized outside, with crossant-like layers inside, buttery, doughy, sugary all at the same time. All I can think about is this morning bun. Too bad I live few hundred miles away from Tartine, now I am in a mission to find a good morning bun here in OC.

It is a little crowded all the time so prepare to be in line for at least 20 min. Pastries and food are worth the wait... I wish the espressos were a little bigger. Overall it is a good place

So happy to stop by for takeout. All proper distancing made easy and masks required but staff was welcoming and baked goods dang amazing like usual. Love this place and the vibe in this part of the Mission.

Pain au Chocolat the size of your head. Airy, fluffy pastry and good coffee. The Morning Bun will start your day off right.

I found taste to be very Americanized, YMMV. Still, would recommend.

I have visited Tartine literally ever time I ve been to San Francisco. A lady behind me in line this morning asked me what to get. I told her it didn t matter because she couldn t go wrong with anything. Croissant, Pain au Chocolat, Morning Bun, Almond Croissant, Lemon Bar, Scone, etc., etc., etc.

Best bread in the world. I heard that Chad's bread was the best. I literally boarded a plane in Phoenix and flew to San Fan to see for myself. Confirmed. Best ever. I would fly again for Chad's bread. I have now been trying to bake bread with Chad's book Tartine. Its not as good as Chads, but its the best bread Ive ever had in Arizona, and that isn't an exaggeration. How did I never know that wild yeast bread was this awesome. Chad is the best bread maker on the planet... bar none.

I enjoyed the gluten free, Paleo-friendly, and non-GMO sourdough bread. It was absolutely delicious. I don't know how they make a vegan friendly bread so enjoyable. I arrived there at 7 am and they had their home-baked bread ready for purchase. The staff was very friendly. Highly recommend.

Don't be discouraged by the line, as it moves pretty quick. Tartine's is known for it's various sweet and savory confections, of which the banana cream tart tops the list, and Dolores Park is walking distance away! Please note parking may be difficult on the surrounding streets, and limited seating is available inside.

San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley boast a lot of great eats; in a week in the Bay Area I tried a lot of them. Tartine was one of the 3 best places I ate at. I ate two things at Tartine: a croque monsieur and a chocolate croissant. The croque monsieur was great and the croissant was unbelievable. I thought I'd eat a bit of it and munch on it throughout the next hour or so so that I could focus on my croque monsieur. I finished both because every time I bit into the croissant, I was shocked by its explosive flavors.
We waited in line for about a half hour and next time I would wait twice as long. If you have to, put on sunblock and bring a book.

Excellent cozy bakery with fresh baked goods and good coffee too. Try the morning bun, orange tea cake, any of the quiches and croissants. Great cakes too to serve for parties. Perfect spot for weekend breakfast or brunch! Cool location in Noe / the mission. Go early when it opens to avoid long lines.

I had such high hopes for this place and being an amateur bread baker myself I've learned most of what I know from Chad's book. Happy to say that the place lived up to its high expectations perfectly! The atmosphere was lively and the place was packed, staff we're very nice. Most importantly the food was great and the basic country loaf we bought tasted exactly as I had hoped!

Very cute place. Came here for birthday celebrations and to entertain out of town guests. We all had either the steak tacos, steak salad, fish and chips and/or burger. The environment was very nice and open, we sat down in the outside area closest to the entrance. Everyone had a great time, and we ended our meal with delicious vanilla cupcakes.

Wow. Easily the best croissant I've ever had. The line was a bit ridiculous and it moves incredibly slow (it was a Saturday morning, so I think everyone had the same idea we had). I think we got a little carried away in attempting to essentially purchase almost one of every pastry, but it was well worth it.

The quiche was delicious, you could tell that the crust was homemade and was cooked to perfection. The pastries were unbelievable, I expected they'd be good but the croissants literally tasted like butter, while maintaining such a beautiful, flaky texture (as someone who's baked croissants before, I have a much greater respect for people who do this well). The coffee was made at a separate counter and also did not disappoint.

The shop is rather small, and some of the tables get in the way of the line, and the line gets in the way of utensil/water area. I imagine it wasn't designed to handle the massive crowds that it attracts.... wish they'd take some of their profits and expand the place a little, because it's just not meant to handle the amount of people who visit their shop everyday. I also love that you can look into the kitchen in the back and watch the pastry chefs, live, make all the delicious food at the counter. Highly recommend for a pastry and a coffee.

There are some places that are iconic, epic, world-renown, and could not possibly live up to the hype. Tartine is not one of those places. I am constantly and consistently impressed by this unassuming little bakery. The infamous morning bun is perfectly sweet, sticky, and citrusy. The pressed sandwiches are insanely good, perfect for picnicking, and are always accompanied by a spicy pickled carrot. In a word: perfection.

Definitely get the chocolate rye cookies. They were almost brownie like in flavor and not too sweet.
I refrain from giving 5 stars based on the insane line. This is one of those cases where one might argue, well the line isn't Tartine's fault, it's the customers who are causing it. While this is technically true, I'm basing the rating off on, was it worth it to go there? Was that a good decision? Would I do it again? And the answer is yes, if the line were shorter. I really wanted to try the breads, but they don't sell French bread until 4:30, so I might go back for that.
Also, be warned, the sandwich portions are gigantic! I would say you could definitely share one between 2 people.

The attention to detail here was pleasurable to watch. Specifically the gentleman making the coffees. We ordered 2 coffees and a chamomile tea. The tea was loose leaf and he brewed it with a timer. After that he made others people's drinks. He did not poor our coffee. I was initially I was concerned the coffee bit of our order was lost in communication. I watched him work at thought maybe he's timing the tea and the coffee to be ready at the same time. There was a bit of doubt that that was the case only because it's rare to see someone so thoughtful, especially over something as seemingly easy as a tea and coffee order. So, I watched. He finished making a few other drinks. Then the tea was ready. He removed the timer and the filter then added a bit of hot water. Then he swung to his left grabbed two coffee mugs and poured the remaining part of the order. I wanted to hug this guy. The thought and care he put into something as simple as a tea and coffee. Tons of respect for this person. If this is the consistent culture cultivated by Tartine I will always recommend it and always stop by when I'm in the city.

On my 'must try when you visit SF' list that I give to my friends or part of the tour I take friends/family on when they come into town. This bakery is life-changing. The pain au jambon is almost certainly food of the gods. Everything else on the menu is also incredibly delicious, but that jambon takes the cake. Also try the salted rye cookies. Also the croque monsieur and the pain au chocolat. If there is no seating room, take them to nearby Mission Dolores park to eat.
