Pastries are good, but this place has the best bread in the world, literally. This joint is a national treasure. Ask for butter and jam and go to town. The Country Loaf comes out of the oven every day at 5. Be there. It will change your life.

Mmm, Tartine... It's so small for such a well-known and popular place, hence the line going out the door. According to my friend, that wasn't even that long of a line. We were there at about 10:30, so probably between the regular breakfast and lunch crowds. The wait was OK with me, as it gave me time to drool over the pastry case and peruse the menu. We ordered the wild mushroom Croque Monsieur (accompanied by two intriquingly spicy pickled carrots), ham and tomato quiche, and the brioche bread pudding with berries, along with a couple of coffees. You pay at the counter and take your number to a table and they bring out the food to you. We ended up sitting at a communal table, but that was cool; it felt like I was at a friend's place or something. Everything was extremely delicious--can't find fault with any of the items we got. I don't know how they make their quiche, but the egg part was so silky and smooth! It was an awesome breakfast. I just wish it wasn't so cramped in there, but that's the price you pay. They also ask that you bus your own tables, but that's not a big deal. I also dug the artwork on display--no safe little pretty pictures just because it's a cafe. There were these cool giant paper cutouts of rather ghoulish-looking humanoids hanging from the ceiling (see my photo) as well as various works on paper all over the place. I forgot the name of the artist, but I really liked his work. One of the many great places I got to visit during my time in SF.

Verrry LONG que but worth my 30-40 mins wait. It was my first time. And, I decided to go through the menu while I was waiting in line. I decided to just buy the Frangipane(almond cream filled) croissant. My husband and I decided we would buy one each. As we reached our turn to place our order, I changed mine (like every woman), I decided to have bread pudding. The server asked me if I wanted small or large and, my husband said small. Big mistake! I wish I had ordered large. It was so delicious (understatement) . My husband said he had multiple orga*s**m (metaphor). The bread pudding picture does not do justice to the taste. I also bought a few more items to go. Didn t taste them yet.
I wanted a sandwich to go but they serve it closer to lunch time and, their breads are available only later in the day.

We paid $ 30 for a small lemon tart, a morning bun, a coffee, and a hot chocolate. Everything was just average good, except for the coffee was not good. The employees with their nonexistent niceness did not value the inflated price. So good the taste, but the next time the money would invest in other things.

Good!

Lovely bakery. Prepare to stand in line and perhaps wait for seating if you plan to dine in. The classic Morning Bun was exquisite. I overheard someone say that was "the best croque monsieur I've ever had."

I had the morning bun, bread pudding, and gougere. The flavors in the dough were great! I thought the pudding was a little bit on the eggy side. The place is very crowded and, at one point, a distinctly aromatic homeless guy was taking it upon himself to clear peoples' plates for a chance at a tip. I thought he was able to do that for far too long before he was ushered away. My rating is only for the food itself, though. I appreciate the delicacy of flavor in the dough but wasn't wowed to the point of a five star rating.

This place is always crowded with people.

This place is always crowded with people.
People look happy on long lines.
Croissants, cakes, and breads eaten and tender and soft
Rich texture is felt
Why anyone can enjoy the long line if you eat
You can see.

Enjoyed my espresso and quiche. Nice atmosphere around 2:00 PM as lunch is fading and it's not too crowded. Bussing my own dishes was a bit awkward as it's not easy getting behind the counter.

I had high hopes.. But it wasn't mind blowing at all. Being from Edmonton, I thought this place would be better than Duchess Bake Shop here.. I was mistaken. I think they are about the same or Duchess may be better. Maybe Edmonton bakery is just that good.

A loaf of their bread is all the sustenance needed to hike up Mt. Tam with your friends. The pastries are consistently great, there is coffee & tea & alcohol to wash them down with, and emotional, downbeat music as your adventurous soundtrack.

This place has been listed as one of the top ten bakeries for several years and it has maintained that position based on the quality of what the do. Their sandwiches are just as amazing as thier pastries. So don't let the line discourage you from giving them a try. And yes, there's several great bakeries in San Francisco and this is one of those places.

Love this place, the croissants are about $5 each and are decent. I cone here for the banana tart that tart is amazing. Great flaky crunchy crust with a nice banana cream filling that is not overpoweringly sweet.

Much hyped bakery and I'd admit that the croissant was delicious. The quiche and latte were just ok, nothing unusual or extraordinary. Pretty pricey (the 3 items mentioned came out to $16) and long lines so probably not a repeat spot for me.

I ve been isolated from big city life and so this place may be normal for some people, but it was crazy for me. The Food here is outrageously delightful. Tasty. Just nice to look at all those crafted pastries. The dining area is small. Why do diners in eating establishments talk so loud? Overflow of table and chairs are along the sidewalk. The line to order food went out the door, and moved along. Got there at 2:00 pm and we ate outside. Hot pressed pastrami was wonderful and I adored it.

BUT be careful where you park. we parked on Guerrero St. few feet away from the cafe & had our car rear window broken into, rear seat down. Fortunately nothing in the boot. But has set us back a couple of hundreds to get the window fixed.

Unchanged: great bread, delicious bread pudding (though I can never finish even the small portion), decent espresso, ... and close to dolores park (which is good since it's always packed and you likely won't get a table).

We finally visited Tartine on a rainy day (pro-tip, shorter lines in the rain, but also less room to sit) only to be underwhelmed. Everything here overflows with richness, and the portions are enormous. The combination makes for a queasy aftermath, even when you don't eat more than half your lunch :(

The pastries are better than the sandwiches, and the coffee is better than the pastries.

Let's start with the weakest:
The sandwiches aren't worth trying. They start with pretentiousness and end with a surprisingly tiresome flavor. Three bites and we were both done, continuing only to avoid a massive waste of food. We tried the Pepper Turkey with Broccoli Rabe Pesto and the Almond Pecorino. The former was okay, the latter just wasn't good. Rhea's, a deli around the corner from Tartine serves a better panini on the very same, admittedly delectable Tartine Country Bread.

The pastries are much better, but still not as good as anything my friends and I have made ourselves. Perhaps stick to the tricker productions like croissants and eclairs. Avoid the overcooked cookies and lemon bars.

The coffee is delish. You can skip the line if this is all you want, but you may as well just head on over to the nearby Four Barrel since that's Tartine's home brew unless you're looking for espresso. Tartine adds a unique citrus and cardamom twist to their espresso drinks which is quite delightful.

Tartine is a place that seems to measure reputation to its long line, so I don't expect to see much improvement in the service or the seating. Expect to wait...forever on a sunny weekend day...just shy of that in the rain. Bring a companion to fight for a sliver of table and expect to have your food delivered 20-30 minutes after making it through the eternal line. Expect to quickly learn how difficult it is to carry heavy plates across the crowd as you bus your own table. Most people simply succumb to getting everything in to-go boxes because it's so difficult to determine if you'll have seating and to maneuver the bussing process, despite the typically environmentally conscious bent of folks in SF.

This is the best place to get dessert in the city, theur sandwich are amazing too. Don't worry about the line, it goes by fast and it's worth the wait, the quality is so good, so fresh that you will want to come to this place many times!!

A universally disappointing and overpriced experience. The tiny portion of coddled egg (singular) was served with great flourish (topped with fish eggs) but simply wasn t that. The bone broth was the most bland tasteless broth I have ever had (again topped with a pretentious description on the menu). To be fair the bread was delicious but I genuinely wish I had bought a loaf and walked out with it. Had hoped for interesting modern cuisine and instead left hungry with lighter pockets.

We had 2 chocolate cakes: one (the mousse one) was good, the other could be improved in terms of flavor (although my bf liked it). The service was slow and it's one of these places where you have to clean after yourself and even place your dishes in separate containers after paying for service charge?! Happy to clean if I'm not tipping!
