The worst service ... We were VERY rude and we left

The skeptic in me didn t want to like Tartine Bakery. It was the one place everyone recommended. Would it be overrated, overhyped? Nope, it was solidly the best meal I had in San Francisco.

I woke up early to stand in line at 7:15am on a random Thursday. There was already a line, but it moves fast thanks to the efficiency of the staff.

I ordered three things- the croque monsieur, the chocolate croissant, and a latte. The croque monsieur comes out on a big open faced bread and is made by angels. It s very creamy and full of flavor. The chocolate croissant is buttery without being overly and has the perfect ratio to dough to chocolate. The dough is very good too. The latte was the best I had in the city.

The cafe itself is beautiful inside and the staff friendly. It s definitely a noteworthy place to visit.

A nice barkery with a lot of options for pastries and more. Prices are pretty higher, but food is solid.

The staff were incredibly friendly and the display cases were stunning. They even have a separate area for wedding cakes. There's a good little sitting area to have your coffee and sweet treats.

Amazing product but going there is like being in a Seinfeld episode.

Tartine draws crowds for a reason. The pan-au-chocolat couldn't have been better, but some of the savory pastries were slightly over salted. Baguettes and country loafs aren't available until after 4:30pm. The line moves quickly and there is extremely limited indoor and outdoor seating.

The best pastries in San Francisco! Bit you also pay an arm and a leg for the bread as well. $5 for a plain croissant; $6.50 for an eclair; basically, nothing is under $5 at Tartine. You sure pay for the best croissants around. There is still a huge line outside when we arrived one day before Thanksgiving, and people were hauling boxes of bread from the store. You can smell the butter even as you stand outside and wait in the queue. First time shoppers may get sticker-shock, but wait until you get home and take a first bite into these decadent breads; then you remember the 1 Euro croissants and Baguettes from Paris.
Oh well, since we can't travel at the moment, Tartine will have to do...

Line moved fast, lemon tart was amazing, and I got a table. Not bad for 3:30 pm on a Saturday.

Nice environment. Got the bread pudding and it was ok. Should have tried the chocolate cake which looked delicious.

When a friend of mine heard that I will go to San Francisco she told me to go to Tartine Bakery and order a morning bun it would blow my mind especially as I like cinnamon pastries. A recommendation for delicious food? Let's go! The place does not look very special from outside but the morning bun, oh my God! The taste of cinnamon with a hint of orange zest... And not too dry not too moist, just perfect.

Great food, but unfortunately a persistently long line.

Very consistently good food, nothing exceptional just very good and consistent. Had the muesli, chocolate tart and the ham and tomato quiche. I recommend the tart as a very sweet heavy snack, the muesli was enough to share a bowl

A truly great bakery. I think there is potential room for improvement on the operations(e.g. getting a second cashier) and decor side.

There is always a queue to grab breakfast and bread, which actually is fun to see. They have a very complete assortment of pastries and cakes and their Batista brews great coffee. Definitely a must go back in the area.

It's overrated. The quiche is nothing more than a frittata with some crust. Don't get fooled by the "pesto" in the spicy turkey sandwich, it's a "broccoli pesto". The bread of the sandwich is the best part and all the rest is what you can find in almost any buttered sourdough sandwich. Maybe you would be okay with these if you don't have to wait a lot, but when there's a long line and you wait for half an hour for these, you feel like it's totally not worth it.

The absolute best croissant I have ever had in my life. I dream about this place. Be prepared for a wait, but it is worth it.

If this little cafe has one fault, you could say that it's location off the beaten path is a little inconvenient. However judging by the long lines we had to wait in when we arrived, maybe it's all for the best. The bread here is simply outstanding. Whatever brunchy goodness you order, make sure it involves some of the bakery's miraculous bread. We feel in love with the Croque Monsieur (we went with vegetables but it is available with ham) as well as the Idiazabal (basically a grilled cheese using sheep cheese and quince jam). The cafe is extremely crowded and bustling so this may not be the place to take in a leisurely meal. However, the food is more than enough to forgive the lack of ambience.

Hard to beat their morning buns, pain au jabon, and croque monsieurs. Pro tip, go to Tartine Manufactory for the bread and skip the line and just pay at the coffee bar.

Best pain au chocolate I've ever tried! the dough is already perfect... and the quality of the dark chocolate filling makes it simply amazing

Reached here around 8.30 am Sunday, and waited in the queue outside. We ordered the morning bun, almond rocher, and passionfruit bavarian cake. Unfortunately the banana cream tart wasn't ready so will make it at home to satisfy my craving. Pricey bakery and seating is tight.

Had great bread toast, coconut macaroons and cappuccino

The double chocolate croissant was big and quite filling. Mocha was served in a bowl so it warmed up my hands pretty well. It's pretty decent bread. It would have been a tad too pricey were it not big. There's sparse sitting so you might end up sharing a table.

We were wandering through the Mission with a friend, who suggested we stop at Tartine for coffee. What a great place - incredible pastries! And my timing was perfect for watching one of the bakers working the ovens. Nice enough to give me a few tips on baking sour dough bread.

Needs some new stuff on the menu. Don't get me wrong it's still delicious and perfect.

I didn't like the banana cream tart. Chocolate made the crust is too hard.

They don't need any recommendation. The line infront of the place is a good proof for the quality of their products.

I ordered pain au chocolat and latte. The chocolate bread is delicious, but the latte looks ordinary.

Great food and coffee - only if the wait isn't absurd.

The food 4 stars.

The wait.... Not worth it. Even discounting the line up that is generally in excess of 20 people, once you order, my espresso, just an espresso took 25 minutes (not exaggerating) to get. I'm sorry, no espresso is worth that kind of wait post order.

So if there's not a huge line up, go here, if there is, go to one of the other many amazing coffee/food shops in the area instead.

Cute little Tarting Bakery & Cafe hiding the most amazing cookies in the world. Don't take my word for it you definitely must try it for yourself. In fact, I wanted my friends and family to try them so I brought a box back to California and everyone loved them.These cookies are the perfect balance between soft, crunchy and heaven.Warning: These cookies are enormous and they will end up as your meal. The stranger next to me was convinced they were scones (not scones). Be sure to bring an appetite and a carton of milk to indulge

One of the best bakeries in San Francisco, let alone the state. Get here early, or risk waiting in a long line. Everything here is good, whether for a quick coffee and pastry to a sit down lunch. Be prepared to deal with long lines and crowds either way, but enjoy some of the best San Francisco to offer.

The tarts and amazing!! Theres always a line here but it went by super fast. Dont forget to place your order before you get to the cashier to pay at the end!

They also have amazing coffee prepared by a very good looking man (at least we were when we last visited )

Worth it. Worth the wait, worth the price, worth the probable lack of table. In fact, your best bet may be to grab it to-go, either to take to your SF home or straight to the airport to your real home.

The most delicious pastries in my entire life. The wait in line is part of the experience and so completely worth it. Be ready to order way more than you think you will and.....eat it all!!!

Be prepared for a long line and not much seating but other than that it's worth it.

It is a little hard to find parking in the area, but once you get past that, you will enjoy one of the best bakeries in San Francisco. Their pastries are fresh and their cakes are delicious. There is something for everyone. If you wonder what a real croissant tastes like, try theirs. They also offer caffeinated beverages and sandwiches

The bread and pastries are excellent but the workers are extremely rude horrible customer service

I must have hit them on an off day. My food is not perfect every day either. Who's is?
My Eclair was way over baked and rock hard. My Banana Cream Tart was watery, lacked flavor and the crust was over baked and too hard to eat. However. the service was excellent and the coffee was perfect.

Really good pastries. Try their morning bun and lemon cream tart.

Neighborhood bakery in the Mission Dolores area that draws the crowds for its freshly baked savory and sweet goodies at reasonable prices. Space is a bit tight due to the crowds.

Everything at Tartine is to die for. I generally don't like sweets and desserts but I LOVE everything I've tried here. My favorite so far is the coconut cream tart, highly recommend it! There's usually a long line but it moves quickly. You won't wait more than 15 minutes.

Staff was not nice at all, rushing us to order when we were still away from the counter and could not see the pastries.

Small and unassuming. You need to know its there and why it is so popular, or you will walk right by without notice. No signs, no logos. Just good sourdough and baked goods.

Had a slice of lemon curd cake and frangipane tarte. Good but the lemon curd cake is a bit too sweet.

The double pain au chocolate and fromage croque were awesome. The secret winner the almond brandy croissant. Just do it. Screw your low carb diet and do it if your here. Worth the extra elliptical time.

Great bread, very long lines, high prices. But hey, the market supports it, so I give them props for that. Suggest going at off-hours, it's not worth the 40m wait for a crossiant.

I went there with my husband and somehow I feel the place is a bit overrated. It s a very small place and hence has very little seating. The tables are super dirty and sticky. We grabbed a table and the people before us had left their used plates(you have to put your dishes into the cleaning bin and throw your trash). We asked servers to please clean the table and literally for 15 mins we stood there waiting for someone to help us with bundle of dishes. A waitress came and put our stuff down next to the trash and left! Eventually we grabbed their dirty dishes and trashed them. It was such a horrible experience. The food is nothing exceptional as well. Tried out there quiche and it had really burnt ends, the chocolate cake was super sweet.

Lets eat croque-monsieur and other French dishes. Attention high prices.

Great bakery but long lines if you're there doing peak times. Love their lemon poppy-seed slice. You can also order delicious but reasonably priced bread for future pickup.

Does the food justify the wait? Depends. Will I come here for pastries all the time if not for the crowd? Most probably!

Buckwheat porridge bread hot out of the oven is divine. Friendly, helpful and patient staff. Wish I lived close by - their bread cookbooks are next best thing.

The almond croissant was a bit dry, butter croissant was very good

I just... don't get it. The food is good. It tastes like pastries. but people wait in line for hours to get this food. Hours! It just blows my mind. I went on a slow day and spent 45 minutes in line. My husband and I got an eclaire, a chocolate pastry, and some lemony thing. Don't get me wrong, they were all good... but 45 minutes good? No way.

i was super full. i've had nothing but great experiences here and will keep coming back. this place has a nice atmosphere.

AMAZING sourdough bread!!!! Best ever! I bought one when itwas just out of oven, still warm! So tempted to finish it all! The tarts are amazing. I am not a tarte person, but i tasted my friend s banana tarte, wish i had oreded a tarted instead.

I was just transported to a bakery in Paris! It was that delicious! Had the ham and cheese croissant. Hubby had honey bun--buttery goodness!
