We came here one evening to see what the hype was about. We didn't make reservations but the wait wasn't too bad, about 20 mins. The receptionist I felt was a bit rude when we came to ask for a table.

Nonetheless, we sat down and quickly ordered our food to avoid the rush. We ordered the mac and cheese, lobster/shrimp and grits and the chicken and waffles. The mac and cheese was the highlight of the night, i did not expect such a creamy and cheesy mac. Probably one the best mac and cheeses I have had in a soul food / Cajun joint in a long time. My chicken and waffles was good but nothing beyond extraordinary. The grits were cooked well and the seafood tasted fresh. After the whole meal, the only memorable dish was the mac and cheese.

Overall, I think because we weren't greeted well, the bad taste lingered and the food didn't taste as great as we hoped.

Lively spot, flavorful food, good service. Nice diverse neighborhood vibe. A bit loud but that speaks to the energy of the place! Couples, families and large groups enjoying comfort food.

The food was great especially the mac and cheese!!. The host was pleasant and the waitress was great. I forgot her name but she made the experience of being at this location for mother's day weekend great. She was on point with everything. It was my first time too. I will surely go back a next time.

Good straight ahead southern food. Not great but good. The drinks were pretty good as well. I liked the atmosphere, it was lovely and the music was good too. Space is a little tight if your at a non-booth take inside but it didn't ruin the experience.

I visited the restaurant a few weeks ago to celebrate a birthday with my entire family. When I first arrived security guard asked me to take my hat off, which I assumed was a security check so I quickly lifted my cap and put it back on. After about 10 minutes of being seated the manager comes over to the table and asks me to take my hat off, to which I respond why he tells me their policy is no hats during dinner service, but I was confused because I saw men at the bar, in the dining room and on the patio with hats on. I told this to the manager and he replied our policy is no hats during dinner. This is the first time I ve heard that policy of the three times I ve visited. I told him I m not taking my hat off because I don t feel comfortable, I felt like this response would make him understand but then he says well I don t know if you want to fix your hair in the bathroom or something which I felt was pretty rude and insensitive. After taking another look around the dining room I told him calmly I m not taking my hat off . I m not sure if I was being singled out because I m a woman but I was upset and felt disrespected because I saw several men walk in after me wearing hats and I didn t see this manger go over to them once. If there s a policy the policy has to be enforced on everyone, additionally they should have a sign up so it s openly advertised and perhaps say something on their website so people don t feel uncomfortable when they re asked to take their hats off.

SOCO Restaurant which is located at 509 Myrtle Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11205 bills itself as a Soul Food Restaurant with a Twist. As a Native New New Yorker with Family Roots in St. Stephen, South Carolina I wanted to taste their Soul Food with my South Carolinian Taste Buds to ascertain whether SOCO knows Soul Food.
The Verdict is that SOCO knows Soul Food well enough to put a Twist on it without making an aberration of Soul Food.
Southern Grits should have a smooth texture, be cooked thoroughly (not gritty), not be congealed like cold flour gravy , should not be soupy, should not have the consistency of porridge.
SOCO Creamy White Cheddar Grits tasted exactly like my South Carolinian Grandmother's Grits. She taught me how to cook Grits to avoid making."tight" Grits. That's Grits with school lunchroom mash potatoes consistency.
Their Macaroni and Cheese which was presented in a miniature Cast Iron Skillet (Lovely Southern Presentation) from oven to table was music to my Southern Taste Buds.
The Sauteed Greens without meat were slightly acidic seasoned well and were scrumptious. The Farm Fresh okra along with diced Farmer's Market Fresh Tomatoes in a buttery well seasoned sauce was delightful to my palate.

Soco Brooklyn was awesome! We enjoyed the atmosphere and the food was fresh and came out very quick. The service was top notch everyone was polite and attentive. We sat outside and enjoyed the outdoor patio. I recommend SOCO not just for the name, but for the traditional southern food with a modern twist! I recommend you make a reservation because it was packed.

My first experience was amazing! The customer service was great and the waiter was very patient. I almost changed my order 3 times because everything looked so good and the waiter was willing to change it each time lol. I had creole gumbo, Carolina shrimp rolls and f-que wings as my appetizers. Everything came out hot and all of it was good!! My drink was the blueberry house lemonade... authentically delicious! My main course was the chicken and red velvet waffle. I usually don't eat stuff like that but had to try it because the whole restaurant seemed to be eating it (restaurant specialty). Speechless! Let's just say I'll be back next week! My girlfriend had the pecan crusted pork chops with collard greens and mashed potatoes which was really good as well. So honestly I don't think you can go wrong eating there. By the way there was this guy playing the violin to different beats. Very talented and created a very soothing atmosphere. Go and enjoy yourself people, YOU'RE MISSING OUT!

Been waiting for over an hour for a seat, almost 7 groups been seated before us, each time 2 groups went ahead of us we asked about our table and they told us different excuses from reservations (which was never mentioned, upon arrival, just that theres a 45 min wait) to the manager allowed them to go ahead of us because of previous bad reviews.

Great vibe and all of the food looked amazing. We went for brunch around 2 on Saturday. We sat right away but the services wasn t too great during peak brunch hours. It took a while for us to order drinks and our server never really followed up after we got our food. The music was also pretty great and everyone sitting around us was super friendly. It s a nice vibe for couples brunch or smaller parties.

I love this place. The creole gumbo is delicious and the best gumbo I've had from a soul food restaurant. My wife loves their chicken & waffles. The atmosphere is great though it's very tight with the seating arrangement. You have to be very careful not to knock someone's table down as you're getting up to leave. Place is always busy reminds me of Sweet Chick restaurant in Williamsburg, the wait for a table is always long but worth it...

Very good meal at a reasonable price. My waitress was very attentive and friendly to our large party. There was a reservation mishap in the beginning, but the manager resolved it quickly and to my satisfaction. Would return again, but not with a large group.

I like the vibe of this this, it honestly felt like a cool place to chill out and enjoy nice day date. My wife and I came out looking looking for a nice lunch date and we had a really good experience here.I had a very good chicken sandwich and my wife enjoyed a good piece of salmon. The grits were a little disappointing though, i remember them being much better.

SoCo truly set the standard for me for what a great restaurant in New York should be. I went here for my birthday and everything was absolutely perfect. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits and I'm still dreaming about it today lol. Everyone in my group ordered a different entree and I can honestly say as someone who works in a restaurant that I was impressed. Not only was the food fantastic, but the drinks were as well. We didn't have a reservation but they were very accommodating. We sat fairly quickly and had great service throughout the night. By the end of the meal we had asked the chef to come over so that we could thank him for the wonderful experience and he was very nice. Definitely one of my favorite spots in New York period.

Pros: The Macaroni is Cheese is Great. The catfish was ok. The Mardi Gras drink was good. The Jambalya is ok. Great Atmosphere.

Cons: The service is was not good, serval things were wrong with our drink orders and issues with apps. for an automatic 18% gratuity for a party of 4 they have to do better. The rib app was tough. The collard greens and Cajun pasta were bland, no flavor what so ever. We went for dinner on a Friday night. I wouldn't return.

Went there on Sunday 2/11/18 about 7pm horrible service my waiter forgot about us. Our orders we're taken after 1hr. After we arrived. Then then manager gave us 10 percent off he increased 2 of our meals. To make up that 10 percent.. I drove all the way from Philly to come see about Soco because due great ratings on Instagram. As far for me it was an awful experience. Will not go back.

Their food here is amazing. The vibe is definitely great the music is good it is always crowded here so please make a reservation if your not sitting at the bar. Great place for birthday dinners, graduation dinners, etc. My favorite food is the F-Que Wings and the Mac and cheese. The staff here is extremely friendly and the manager is always available greeting and seating guest that come in. On Wednesday there is happy hour the whole entire day at the bar including some appetizers.

Returned to Soco ..party of 3.. Was looking forward to the BBQ baby back ribs ..to make sure we got the table served ribs My sister and I ordered the ribs at the table to take home... They looked bigger & not quality when I 1st started being a frequent customer. Called to speak to the manager. He stated they are having trouble getting the top quality in a while.. They may discontinue the baby back ribs.
..Until quality is found. ..unfortunately. .
