I bought my TRD Off Road Toyota Tacoma from Gary Frederick, while still assigned in Japan. I used USAA s True Car buying service to find the vehicle. Gary Frederick and his team were professional and prompt. Despite sub-freezing temperatures Mr. Frederick did not hesitate to immediately create a customized video detailing features we had discussed. I had contacted several dealers prior to Smart Motors and all of them did not consider me a serious customer. Gary did. Approximately three days later we had a deal done. It was painless and I felt like I was Mr Frederick s only customer despite I know I was not. I d drive the three days from WA for the value and service Mr. Frederick abd Smart Toyota provides.

I had a lot of problems with scheduling service appointments. I did so online, received confirmation and showed up only to be told I had no appointment. They were unable to accommodate me at all (for a very simple service-oil change and inspection for problems). I can understand computer issues but not the lack of courtesy to take responsibility for their errors! They were also unable to re-schedule an appointment for me due to computer issues.

I recently purchased a car from Smart Toyota. The entire process went so smoothly, it was hard to believe I was making a major purchase. The staff was very helpful and patient with me as I narrowed down my selections to a final 2 . As I sat there trying to decide, I felt no pressure at all and was able to re-test drive either car or test drive an additional car or two. The sales man was great that I worked with, and stated that he wanted to make sure I was happy with my selection. I would recommend Smart Toyota to anyone.

Buying a car is stressful. I don't enjoy it. The folks at Smart Motors did not magically make it an enjoyable experience. No one could do that. they did make it less stressful. Our sales guy, Gary, kept in touch from first email contact until we came in and looked at vehicles. He was pleasant and knowledgable. If he didn't know the answer, he found someone who did. He is definitely one of the main reasons we purchased our Prius from Smart.

We worked with Bob L in getting a new Rav 4, and it was a very stress free experience. Bob was patient, listened to what we were looking for, and in fact welcomed us checking out competitors vehicles, explaining what advantages the Rav had over the competition--and he was 100% right when we test drove another vehicle! We got a 3 year lease, and he and his manager were willing to "do a little negotiating." No pressure to buy. The best comment is my wife and I felt he was very honest and not evasive with our questions. This is our 4th experience with Smart, and obviously we keep coming back! Wes was also great in doing the paperwork and discussing our lease. My wife also has nothing but praise for the service department . (which she's used for 10+ years), and my daughter who lives in Chicago even drives up to Madison to get her Corolla serviced. Good people!

I have been going to Toyota dealership for about eight years. They do a good job and I feel that they are reliable. Appointments are easy to make and usually take about the time that they tell you. The waiting room is nice with lots of refreshments: drinks, specialty coffee machine, popcorn, fruit and freshly baked cookies. There is also a room for kids to hangout, with their parents, to watch kid-friendly TV or play.

This is my go-to place for oil changes and car maintenance on my Toyota. Friendly customer service, reasonable wait times, comfortable waiting area, and quality work for the most part. However, twice now when I've had maintenance done on my tires I leave the service center only to find one of the hubcaps missing on my vehicle once I arrive home. It's a headache to go and buy a new one just because of some lack of attention in making sure things are secure before returning my vehicle. 4/5

To be honest, I feel less safe driving my car since they did work on it (wheel bearings replacement). First off, they skipped one of the repairs we asked them to do as a result of a negotiation to lower the price (they did not make it clear that part of the price reduction would be them skipping this). Now, when I drive, there is a loud 'thunking' noise from the back of the vehicle when I make a sharp turn, followed by the low tire pressure light coming on. This had never been an issue before and I am left wondering what they tampered with in an effort to get us to come back to spend more money.

In 2013, I purchased a 2010 Prius with 69,000 miles on it from Thomas. I paid about $17,000 for it. This past Sunday the engine totally died on me and now the trade-in value for this non-running car is $500, or I can pay $6,000 to replace the engine.

This car is not even 6 years old and has 130,000 miles on it. After numerous phone calls to Smart and Toyota Customer Experience line, it is 100% apparent that they do not want to back up their product in any sort of way. In fact, I was promised a phone call from Smart Motors customer relations manager by the end of day yesterday, no call whatsoever.

Frankly I'm embarrassed to own a Toyota and more embarrassed that I purchased it at Smart Motors. I hope you only expect them to support their product through the original warrantee. They won't anywhere beyond that.

I was cheated by them for charging me as high as $4,887.30 just for replacing 2 doors, painting and few minor work on my 2016 Toyota RAV4. I contacted Mike and Andy who were the sales team when I bought my truck and within a few hours I was on-site having it installed by the rest of the professionals. The waiting area is top notch - hot coffee, cookies, soda and juices with soft chairs and today's paper. Smart Motors offered several vehicles that were in my son's limlted budget and was able to purchase one that satisfyed his needs.Our salesperson was there to assist him but did not come on as an aggressive type of person which we both appreciated.
Upon agreement of a vehicle and price(he was willing to be flexible in his price structure)he had it inspected by his techs once more as an issue came up during the test drive.Sure enough,a steering issue was detected by the techs and corrected within a day.I was impressed by their admission of not catching that problem initially and would absorb the repair cost .
I will keep Smart Motors on my "must see"list the next time our family is looking for reliable vehicles to purchase from a high-integrity dealer!

I want to give a huge shout out for Sales Manager Andy Goepfert and Luke Severson from the Service Team. We purchased a used car from Toyota and Andy our sales associate was professional, knowledgeable upfront with pricing and really went the extra mile to ensure we not only found what we wanted in a vehicle but that we were satisfied with our purchase. After two weeks of driving, I heard a very low-pitched noise and Andy had us bring it in and took care of the problem at no cost. Luke from service was awesome! Of course when he drove our vehicle it did not make the noise , but Luke wanted to keep the car another day to see if it made any difference as he test drove it the next day. Sure enough the noise came back. Luke was so courteous and respectful over the phone through the entire process and he did his due diligence to find the problem and correct it. I know I will be returning in the future to purchase from this team again. They were The BEST! Thanks Andy and Luke and the rest of the Toyota team!

I bought a brand new Toyota Prius here for sticker price in 2007. As I was driving it home from the lot the right front hub cap fell off the wheel and the car behind me ran it over and shattered it. When I got home I tightened the remaining 3 and found all of them loose. I called Smart Motors and they said it was not covered under warranty as it was 'reckless driving' (at the time that it fell off I was making a turn at 15 mph). I tried talking to several people here including my salesman and none were receptive. They all said I could bring it in and be charged for the labor and part but would not put a new hub cap on my car for free (A $15 part for them on a $28k sale!!). I am very disappointed in their service and will never buy another car from here nor recommend this dealer to anyone. They also told me I qualified for 1% interest as part of a incentive they were running. Then when I got my bills they were at 6.5% and again- there was nothing they could do. Toyota Financing also kept sending me bills after the loan was fully paid for and refused to send me an amortization schedule. I still do not know if I overpaid. Needless to say, my experience with this dealership and Toyota (including all the recalls on this car, which is a whole other story) have been less than glamorous. I will be buying a low MPG vehicle from another manufacturer besides Toyota next time- someone who stands behind their cars.

I've bought 3 cars from them now, I've been very Happy with all 3 purchases. I recently bought a used Prius, it was 8 years old, they replaced tires and brakes, before they even listed it for sale, they even replaced the batteries in the key fob. Most dealerships won't go that far, especially for an older used car, but they are trying to make every customer happy. I bought from Tim Nugent in the used car department, he's been there for 7 years and he is a great guy to work with, I can't recommend enough, I've gone through several different dealerships but I've never gotten as good of customer service anywhere else

Worse experience I ve ever had at the dealership. Traded in my car for 2018 XSE Camry was dissatisfied with the vehicle. Contacted Toyota the next day to get my trade in back. Was denied. Tried to contact upper management was rerouted to sales manager. Now stuck with a big car loan for a car I m no happy with. Other dealerships that I visited after said they could ve easily given my car back. I will never recommend this dealership to anyone.

Everyone was very friendly at Smart Motors and it was not a high pressure experience at all. I was able to find a fantastic deal, and they have many cars with the entire service history and the Carfax right in the window. Toyota also requires a 160 point inspection, and recently changed their power train warranty to be 10 years/100,000 miles from your date of purchase, not the life of the car.

Austin was knowledgeable and honest without being pushy, and Justin was able to get me an interest rate of 3.6%. They offered options for extended warranties, but didn't push it when I went for a cheaper version (I set money aside each month for car repairs). Overall, a great experience!

Update: After I declined offers of a lease termination penalty (~$5K) and higher cost replacement vehicle (~$1K) on Nov. 23, the Smart Motors sales team acknowledged my concerns and offered to swap out the vehicle at no additional cost on November 26. The sales manager communicated with me frequently to provide updates until I received the new car December 4, which is currently in good working condition. I have confidence in the maintenance teams who diagnosed the initial problem and am grateful their expertise identified the root cause of the wiper malfunction.

Do not trust Toyota vehicles or the sales team - you may get stuck with paying full price on a defective, fire hazard of a vehicle. I leased a new 2020 Rav4 LTE Hybrid on November 11. On November 17 and 18, the wipers malfunctioned and the car had to go back for service. The service team found a hole in the metal of the car that shouldn't have been there that was funneling water into the electrical components of the wipers. After finding that defect, they determined the fuel line may also have been involved, so the vehicle remains in the shop. The sales manager said "defects happen" and " they are fixing it" when I said that I no longer felt safe in this car and felt lied to during the sales process in which he told me multiple times that the car would never need to be in service except for routine oil changes unless I damaged it. Now, they have not offered to make this right in any way - apparently, I have to still pay the full amount and continue leasing the defective car (that the service and sales department acknowledged could still be defective) unless I want to pay early lease termination penalties. I feel like my physical and mental safety are in danger as a result of their defective vehicle and lack of any appropriate response to my concerns.

Why the 1 star?
Short version: Replacing one sensor that I identified as a possible issue cost $2,600+ and over a week in the shop.
Story explained: My car is an 06 with 200,000 miles. It was professionally maintained it s whole life and if you buy Toyota for the same reason I do... you know they last. It left me stranded for the first time ever in a carwash of all places (probably pretty funny to watch me push it out of the bay door while turbo drying fans tried to push me back into the wash) for what I thought was an electrical issue due to water getting sprayed in from the undercarriage wash. After spending several hours of my own time and money diagnosing coil packs, spark plugs, and engine codes. I had narrowed the problem down to a Camshaft sensor giving up on me (could have been moisture or just getting old). After replacing it with a non-Toyota made aftermarket sensor, I had what seemed to be a timing issue and a new engine code. I was at my wits end and decided to let the pros diagnose what they thought was wrong. After explaining the unique situation (the car would start and run perfectly normal when it had been sitting below freezing overnight, then begin to misfire as if there was a timing problem after warming up) and my inkling that there was an electrical problem I couldn t figure out caused by the wash, the service person came back with a quote of $1,500 to replace the timing gear that aligned with a TSB they came across. Even when the rep failed to explain exactly how that could fix the symptoms of temperature controlled misfire codes... I said OK. Guess what. Didn t fix the problem. The rep then said it s possible the timing chain may have stretched and skipped a tooth causing a timing issue (plausible... except the car should never have ran normal after it shut off the first time... and don t you think the tech would have checked the tolerance on the timing chain, seeing as they were changing one of its gears?) or that the tech installed the chain incorrectly (which is alarming how little faith that carries for your technician all together). So they had to pull the motor again to check their work. I m dragging on so let me speed it up. They then had the Master Technician look at it, replaced all the coil packs that I already checked to be operable, changed the plugs that were now fouled from misfiring during tests, and ultimately change the cam sensor I had already pointed to as a possible problem bringing the total to over $2,600. Icing on the cake? They gave me a $100 coupon for my trouble ... then charged me $144 for labor on the crank sensor that takes less than 3 minutes to change on the top of the engine.
I have a much newer vehicle that I also purchased from Smart Toyota, and quite frankly I m a little nervous to ever have it serviced there.

After telling the sales person I wanted to go home to thing about it, he texted me his card, and thanked me. And the buying experience was again no pressure. Showed me some numbers and asked if I was interested. Gave me a quote for my old vehicle for a trade in, and explained the options he had for rebates and financing. Everyone appeared to be having fun, and were very social and they all acknowledged me. Felt like I was one of the employees. They have a great waiting area with lots of food and drink and tv's. Highly recommend everyone look here first.

Ask them this before you agree to have them service your car. "If you break something else while fixing the problem, who pays for that?" Just start that discussion when you bring it in.
I had to have the transmission replaced (supposedly) and they broke something off the radiator, and the whole thing had to be replaced. Then in the process of fixing that they broke something of the ac condenser and that had to be replaced too.
"Things get brittle, the car is eight years old"
Apparently eight years old is super old now.
Anyway, nothing I could do, have to find a mechanic who is more careful I guess.

We worked with Mike Kluvia for our entire experience. My fiance was in a very unfortunate accident with her Rav 4 which was purchased at this same location. I am first amazed that they have zero return customer discounts. We were offered family and friend pricing because of my employment, but other than that they really make you feel like they are bending over backwards for you. Everything started with us letting Mike know we are working on the financing and should be done the same day. We found a red Highlander we liked and was one test drive and signature away from owning it. When we showed up, it was gone without a call or anything letting us know. He was able to find a brand new highlander that was on a truck for delivery arriving anytime now. We decided to make the move for the purchase and he gave us all the information, including the VIN for our insurance. He asked that we fill out the online application and assured me there would be no hard credit pull. We already locked our finances and had the money waiting for them. After I repeated over and over there is no need to pull our credit twice and he was 100% positive that would not happen, he was apologizing when I found out indeed they pulled a second time. His response was "We have a new website and we had no idea what kind of pull would happen." Either way, we had the car on the way and was waiting for the call. Later that evening, he called to let us know the car was actually not our for delivery and was still at the factory. It would be a few more weeks before we could make the purchase. Our wedding is in 23 days and this car was putting a great deal of stress on us during a bad time. We already lost one car, now two plus two hard credit pulls. He mentioned he DID have one available, nothing like the one we wanted and would need to spend an extra $2,000.00 to have it in time for the wedding. He honestly had the nerve to make it sound like he went out of his way to get a car for us, that we would be spending much more on. Don't let Mike get you into the same corner he put us in. Shop around, you will be treated with MUCH more respect. This guy is a joke when it comes to car sales, don't let him fool you.

Long story short - We drove over to the East side Toyota. Looking through their lot we found a highlander that was exactly what we were hoping for. They asked what the price Madison West had and not only matched, but BEAT the price. Painless process, no lies and we feel great walking out the door with our new Highlander. Shop around and skip this place. Don't be fooled by Mike.

Toyota absolutely took care of me on a very bad day. I was rear ended and the van had a lot of damage. I drove to Toyota and the amazing service person got my car scheduled for a repair and had me in a loaner within 20 minutes. I'm so grateful for how easy Toyota made it. It made a very difficult situation much more manageable!

The entire process of purchasing a vehicle at Smart Motors was a breeze. We were able to test drive multiple RAV4s from their used lot. They were also very generous when dealing with our trade-in. It was important for me that they weren't pushy. They let us do our own thing and we checked out other dealerships as well, but the service was so great at Smart. I would absolutely recommend TJ at the used lot and Al at the new lot. It was overall a great experience for first-time car buyers.

First day waited for 15 minutes before someone would approach me to help. I complained about this issue to the sales manager. He half heartedly apologized about it but didn't really do anything about it. As a result I stated to leave the dealership. This great salesperson kimberly literally came to my car and requested to give her ONE chance (Only good thing about this whole experience). I agreed to give her chance, and ended up purchasing a car. Then the new issue started. Somehow they mixed up two cars. I ended up driving the car I wanted and they had me sign paperwork for different car. My pick up of car was two days later. While I was at the airport two days later, I got text after my wife picked up the car asking me come back and sign new paperwork because of their goof up. When I went back to dealership I found that price had gone up on paperwork. It was not about $600 but it was the principle of running business. I complained about it and I was told that they had made a mistake. My reply was that if dealership made mistake then dealership should take a blow of the loss not the customer. As a reply I was told to send an email to them about my complaint. After two weeks and couple of phone calls as reminder, I am still waiting for a reply to my email, I have sent.
I wanted to give them 4-5 stars in spite of my initial bad experience, but they failed to make most out of almost a no sale.

We live in Rockford, IL and just purchased our 3rd Toyota at Smart Motors from Greg Erzen within the last 6 years. Greg is excellent to work with, has great follow-up and is very professional. He answered all of our questions and concerns about the vehicles we were considering. Greg constantly followed up with us providing solutions on pricing, trade-in value and vehicle consumer reviews concerns. We also considered buying a Honda Accord and Greg quickly responded with a counteroffer on the Camry and sent us a side-by-side comparison. We drove up the next day to trade in our Tacoma and bought the Camry. We worked with 4 different Toyota and Honda dealerships and several salespeople and Greg is by far the best. He never gave up and as a result earned our business. We would give him a score of 12 on a 10 scale. Thanks for all of your help Greg!

I am a picky sort of buyer, and also very efficient, and I found that the staff here was also very very efficient, good at answering my questions, receptive to working with my timeline and very responsive to emails and texts. Very disappointing. This is the second time that I ve made an appointment for service at Smart Motors and the second time that they didn t seem to have a record of it. For the most recent visit, they determined that I only needed a tire rotation and an all-points inspection and that it would take about an hour. After 1-1/2 hours of waiting and no sign that my car was ready, I asked for my car and my keys. They took another 15 minutes to get the car to me and while they waived the (minimal) charges, I felt that the wait was entirely unreasonable especially since I wasn t a walk-in but rather had made a scheduled appointment (which I have proof of). They pride themselves on washing a car when they provide a service but mine was returned to me unwashed. Again...disappointing; I ll go elsewhere from now on.

In May of this year (2020), my partner and I decided to purchase a used Mazda from Smart Motors. After some expected haggling and attempts to slip in hidden fees, we finally came to an agreement about the price. Due to concerns about Covid-19, I requested to do all the paperwork electronically. My partner works with the elderly, and we would be borrowing some cash from her dad, who has health problems. I know of several people who have purchased vehicles online during non-pandemic times, so I figured this wouldn t be a problem. Apparently, at Smart Motors you have to come in for some reason. I was informed that every precaution would be taken and that everyone would be wearing a mask and everything would be done in open, well-ventilated, sanitized areas. I was uncomfortable with their stubbornness and did not understand why I couldn t just do it online, but I decided to trust the process. Soon, I was in a small, poorly ventilated office with an older man without a mask who frequently came within mere feet of me, my partner and her dad as he attempted to explain the confusing and convoluted paperwork. Soon, though, we were on the road in our new (used) vehicle. The car was working fine, so I decided not to write any kind of review initially. The salesperson was friendly enough, and nobody ended up with the virus. I just wanted to move on. Then, the temperatures finally got hot enough to start using the air conditioning, but it didn t come out cold. My partner took it to a trusted mechanic, and he said that it has probably had a leak since before we purchased it. When we inquired about our warranty, we were informed that it doesn t cover such repairs. The dealership seems to think it s our problem they sold us a vehicle with a costly defect without disclosing it to us. The fact that they brazenly defied their commitment to following health and safety protocol for Covid-19 after we made a reasonable request to do our business electronically reaffirms how much they do not care about the customer. I thought Smart Motors was supposed to have a good reputation, but I guess they don t live up to it.

Came in for an oil change and an issue with the engine. Told me I didn't need an oil change. Couldn't find the issue with the engine. It was almost out of oil. Incompetent - will never return.
