this nationl park is shielded by the Nilgiri Plateau to the North and the Mannarkad Plains to the South, the Silent Valley was named a national park in 1984. Located in the Northeast corner of Palakkad district, the valley constitutes the centerpiece of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and was named a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2012. A few centuries ago, before humans reached the Silent Valley, this reserve of tropical rainforests stood undisturbed and tranquil like a beautiful hidden diamond. Its silence was emphasized by the missing cicadas that usually characterized rainforests. Yet animals are plenty and the vast diversity in flora and fauna is breathtaking.

One of the only remaining rain forest. Amazing view of the forest and the Kunthi river from the watch tower. Probably the deepest you can go in a jeep into forest, nearly 22 KMs thanks to the electricity board who built the road to reach the proposed dam site. The dam project was shelved due resistance from environmentalists and we have the privilege of passing through the thick rain forest. The crystal clear water flowing through the river is a delightful sight.

Silent Valley National Park, is a national park in...

Silent Valley National Park, is a national park in Kerala, India. It is located in the Nilgiri hills, has a core area of 89.52 km2 (34.56 sq mi), which is surrounded by a buffer zone of 148 km2 (57 sq mi). This national park has some rare species of flora and fauna. This area was explored in 1847 by the botanist Robert Wight.

The national park is one of the last undisturbed tracts of South Western Ghats mountain rain forests and tropical moist evergreen forest in India. Contiguous with the proposed Karimpuzha National Park (225 km2 (87 sq mi)) to the north and Mukurthi National Park (78.46 km2) to the north-east, it is the core of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (1,455.4 km2), and is part of the Nilgiri Sub-Cluster (6,000+ km2), Western Ghats World Heritage Site, recognised by UNESCO in 2007.

Plans for a hydroelectric project that threatened the park's biodiversity stimulated an environmentalist social movement in the 1970s, known as the Save Silent Valley movement, which resulted in cancelling the project and creating the park in 1980. The visitors' centre for the park is at Sairandhri.

The hills are part of highly sensitive Western Ghats and was once thick dense teak forests inhabited by tribals. Later the area became popular among English planters and the area soon developed into major plantation belt. Its one of the few plantation areas in India, where multiple crops like Pepper, cardamom, tea, coffee and oranges are cultivated.Amidst the blue mountains of Nilgiris, surrounded with ridges on all sides lies the Silent Valley national park in Palakkad, Kerala - about 50km from Coimbatore. A home to some of the rare flora and fauna, this national park can be visited all year round with the exception of Fridays and somewhere between March to May when the park is closed. The weather is always pleasant in here courtesy of the natural wall of ridges around it that protects it from extreme weather events.Shielded by the Nilgiri Plateau to the North and the Mannarkad Plains to the South, the Silent Valley was named a national park in 1984.
