Average room for a downtown hotel. $36.00 valet parking. No choice to park your own car. The hotel itself is beautiful, it's annoying to pay so much for parking. Fantastic downtown location. You take the good with the bad.

Nice hotel for being over 100 years old and historic but not the best place for a good nights sleep. I was on the 7th floor and could hear all the cars revving engines and car horns all night long.. Bed was not very comfortable either. Staff was very friendly, you have to pay $6.95 to use computers in the business and then charge to print as well. I needed to print some tickets but the computer blocked my document from printing, this was disappointing and I was out of $6.95..At least a staff member let me email her my tickets and she printed them for me...Very nice and relaxing whiskey bar.

Definitely need some improvements.

Good location. Pool is small. You can park just for $5 on weekends at the nearest garage

Pros: Lobby architecture has a grand feel. Lots of comfy seating in lobby. Speakeasy/Blind Pig style bar. Walking distance from River walk and a couple theaters. Room amenities were solid, big flat screen, built-in USB charging station at nightstand. Overall very clean.
Cons: Room layouts are based on a different time in American, so they are a little cramped.

My new husband and I checked into the Gunter Hotel on a Monday afternoon after the hotel we were staying in for our honeymoon stay-cation was unable to extend our stay. Upon hearing that we were newly weds, the amazing front desk agent upgraded us to a larger room. The hotel lobby was spacious and very pretty. Our room itself was very large and the bed was comfortable. We spent the day out on the riverwalk and were greeted upon our return with a bottle of chilled champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, and a very nice handwritten letter from the front desk agent who checked us in.

The only two downsides to our stay were that the pool was not open for swimming, although you could lounge in the pool area. Additionally, after dinner we planned on visiting their super cool hotel bar, 414 for evening cocktails but they closed early since they weren t busy at all (this was before we knew there was champagne in our room!).

Overall, our stay was excellent and we look forward to visiting again!

Visited one early morning to see what they were offering for breakfast in their new to go area and pastry section. Since they are competing across the street from Sips and Starbucks. Easy accessible from outside the hotel or within. Their pastry display was extremely limited for breakfast, but abundantly ready to serve your sweet tooth for later. The traditional coffee drinks incorporated Starbucks Coffee products. Fridge display served some pressed juice, yogurt parfaits, cups of tuna salad, cups of egg salad, and other Ready To Go meals. They had some shelves of other commonly Ready To Go treats consisting of candy and common sorts. The prices for their Ready To Go sorts was average to any Starbucks. You can still stay and eat breakfast which the menu did some pleasing to try, but I had to go to work. Plus there is more than plenty of outdoor seating than the Starbucks across the street. My next visit would be to stay for breakfast, or to enjoy some sweets with some company.

Overall this hotel is okay but needs some aesthetic improvements. Gorgeous historic building. However, tons of chipped paint on the doors and floorboards make it look old and unkempt. Got upgraded to club level, which was nice as the room was larger, but there's no club lounge service right now so it didn't mean much. I was only here a quick night so didn't check out any amenities. TV service was great w/ ESPN and Netflix; bathroom storage lacking. I got a great points saver rate so I'd stay here again for that rate, but I wouldn't pay over like $100 (plus $37 valet parking/night...I parked off College less than a block away for $10 for the night).

My husband and I had an amazing anniversary and customer service was absolutely amazing. We slept so well and didn't hear cars honking or an traffic noise, which gave us a good night's rest.

The Gunter staff is competent and friendly, and the rooms spacious and clean, but thin walls, substandard plumbing fixtures and drains, and less than immaculate corridors leave it straining for a fourth star. For average accommodations it will certainly suffice as a base of operations for conference-goers, but for vacationers or a luxury experience, it will likely fall short. It's a solid and solidly-run hotel, nothing negative, just nothing to recommend it more highly.

There customer service is amazing from the moment you walk in! Housekeeping works around your schedule. The desk assistants will even give you a history lesson about the Hotel (talk to Stefan)! Pool is always kept clean. The gym is actually bigger than I thought, with free-weights. The beds are so comfortable & the room is spacious. The bathroom has a deep tub, so take a bubble bath if you like. And yes there's free Wifi! Enjoyed my Time here! Staff was amazing! And everything looked exactly like the pictures!

The staff really isn't welcoming. The astetics of the room seemed kind of dated. I have a feeling that is a draw to this hotel if you're onto that stuff, but if you're not the room seems cramped. The TV worked kind of flaky with the channels periodically going in and out. The food and service from the restaurant was great.

I went to bar 414 to listen to the jazz and have happy hour. I checked in at the vallet and had my ticket redeemed at the bar complementary. The happy hour menu is very affordable with beautifully crafted food items. We had the brisket bisquets, grits and pork belly, butter wings, and bologna sandwich. The happy hour drinks were great, especially for the price. $5 Cinco vodka, Rebecca Creek whiskey, or a rye whiskey old fashion. I also tried the Santa's little helperwhich was similar in flavor a creaminess as a white Russian but with a way more complex buttery flavor with cream, amaretto butterscotch whiskey. Amazing

All hotel staff were courteous and provided great suggestions for places to visit. The club lounge was and extra benefit, especially the daily continental breakfast and evening reception. It was also great that the hotel is pet friendly and there is a park a block away to take the pets. The hotel is walking distance from the Riverwalk. I would come back to stay again.

Good sized room and staff were great. Downside was shower never got hot, sink was scolding, no extra toilet roll in the room, ordered room service for oatmeal and was given a knife and fork NO spoon. All minor things and when taken one at a time they could be easily overlooked, but collectively they speak to poor management.

My room was dirty, they moved me and that room was dirty as well. The short female manager is rude also. Some of the other staff were rude as well. The young ladies who do check in and the valet people are all nice and well mannered.

I stayed for a week on a business trip and from the breath taking architecture to the history lesson in each corridor, this hotel is astounding.

I would highly suggest doing three things.

1) See Berny at the Market on Houston Bar. She was the most courteous and helpful bartender of my entire trip. She knows the hotel's history along with how to mix a drink to perfection.

2) See Manny in the barbershop downstairs. He had the experience and finesse to make a barbershop with The Gunter's reputation a very memorable experience.

3) See Ryan in Bar 414. He puts his signature twist on every classic, along with his ability to mix up something to really keep you guessing.

All in all, the staff and surroundings were exquisite.

Cheers!

Stayed in the corner suite (rm 613/614) which was an impressive amount of living space. We enjoyed the location due to its proximity to the heart of downtown SA (houston street district, riverwalk). Also had our frenchies with us which is a huge selling point for people travelling with dogs. We will stay here again!!

Very good hotel to stay at. This is historically old building so it has neat stuff about it.down in basement is some history about hotel and who stayed there.Very good shape for its age. The 414 bar is cool. Yes I would stay again.

Stayed here on business, interesting historical hotel. Great location walking distance to tourist spots. Bathroom was tidy, albeit dated. Staff friendly and helpful. Lovely little snack trolly set up at happy hour time in lobby. Primary complaint: sandpaper sheets, bedskirt was crazy askew.

Not very impressed. Hotel is old. Has a stale, smoked in, smell throughout. Checked in and was told we'd receive a text if our room was ready early. After almost two hours, went up and asked about front counter person if the room was ready and he said it had been ready for a while. Prices are jacket up for everything from their valet to the water in the room. If you want a chuckle, read the cost sheet for phone calls as they charge for every kind of call (except calling the front desk). Bathroom tiny. Rooms outdated. And had a random homeless guy threaten to knock everybody in the place out while we waited to check our bags will every worker in the place just looked at him and then when back to work while all the guests looked on with concern over a possible situation. And don't get me started on how the outside had beer bottles in plants and smelled like urine. We will not be back.
