The shopping heart of San Francisco. A little crowded for my taste but fun to come here every once in a while. The square often hosts events - live music, sports etc. There is a convenient underground car park below the square.

Nice place . Generally some music or other actvity is going on. One can see the iconic tram going from one side. The cheese cake factory where you get amazing cheese cakes is just opposite. At present some construction activity is going on so one side is blocked. All in all a good place to visit
Located in downtown San Francisco, the historical Union Square has always been the very first place a tourist visits after they arrive in San Francisco - it's one of the busiest districts in San Francisco, and the best place to go shopping (in my own opinion). Don't forget to take a break from shopping and visit the park as different events take place all through out the year - Macy's invited David Beckham here to promote his own brand of underwear a couple years ago, and I was lucky enough to get to see him up-close!
Awesome place to visit. There is a parking structure underneath union square. There are stores everywhere within walking distance. There is a five story Macy's store right across union square, there is also a Saks Fifth Avenue on the opposite side. There are a lot of places to eat around there. There is a Cheesecake Factory inside Macy's. If you can't afford spending $1,000 dollars on four pieces of clothing, there is a discount sections on the third floor, it's more up my alley. Overall it's a really nice busy place, there are all kinds of people from all walks of life.
4 large painted hearts on the 4 corners of the square. 3 if them have their designs changed yearly while the last one was painted by someone famous and has a constant design.
Little shade so it gets hot during the day.
Benches and seats have PowerPoints for charging
Thankfully, not many homeless there.
3/5 would go if I walked by, wouldn t go out of my way to visit.
Nice place ... This place is very beautiful in Christmas time. Awesome decoration. Awesome thing is parking is available at walkable distance. Its paid parking but no need to worry about the charges. You will get parking in very few dollars.
Very cool plaza that often has art vendors selling their works. Occasionally theres a musician (I've seen a bagpiper, an accordionist, and a flutist) on the corner of Powell by one of the heart sculptures. Lots of shopping around, big hotels (Westin St. Francis has the elevators that go outside with views of the square) and roof top restaurants (the Cheesecake Factory has outdoor seating overlooking the square) with the cable car going up one side. Cool tree lighting ceremony and skating rink during Christmas time.
Honestly, one of the most overrated spots in sf. Live music sometimes is nice, but way too crammed with tourist buses, homeless people and the odd looney. Good meeting point if your afraid of getting lost though. Really nothing to eye catchingly iconic about it anymore, much like sfo itself
Union Square is a great place to shop around also great hotels in the area if you like history stick around to see a union have a squabble well they don't do that anymore but they used to back in the day great place to have a lunch brunch catch up with friends it's really a nice little square go see yourself there I do all the time
It is the center of the city. People meet their people start their people and their evening there. Great great open space lots of seating lots of chairs with tables and always entertaining.
As a Native New Yorker, I consider this Union Square, the 'mini version' of Union Square back home. I do like how intimate the whole square is and similarly to the one in NYC, there are many shops that surround the square. During the Winter time, there is usually an ice skating rink in the area.
Very magical place. We had a lovely time exploring all the stores and people watching. There was so much to do, including a place to ice skate. Will be back! It did start to get sketchy after the sun went down so we left. It other than that we felt very safe.
Holiday busy, big crowds and lot's of construction everywhere but still a marvelous way to spend a day; extraordinary range of retail stores for every imaginable desire, fabulous restaurants, ice skating rink, and great people watching opportunities
Love love SF Union Square. Been coming here since I was a child! Love the big stores and the excitement of the city. Just wished the City of SF hurry up to finish the construction in front of Macy's. It has been years. Dare say at least 10 yes in construction?? Also do something about the homeless there...
There is a lot of construction going on right now. So it's kind of ugly. Hopefully someday it will be the beautiful Union square the we know it. Or even better than before.
A good place to sit and relax in between busy roads. There is a hop on hop off tour bus service available from here which takes you around the city. There are two cafes on either side.
If you're a friend, a fan or a frequent guest of SF, you know the landmark. If you like coffee shop specialties (drinks or pastries) you'll get good ones at the east end of the square, and if you have time to take in a show, see the tix booth at the west end, which is the best place east of Chicago to start if you want to take in the arts for a bargain. In the winter, there's skating on the square and a traditional tree-lighting. But the rink is small, the rates pricey and the wait can be long so it may actually be better to just stop by to watch a others skate. While exploring the areas, the high fashion stores will be obvious but don't forget to check out the high fashion hotels as well.
Since I live in San Francisco Union Square Really Isn't a Big deal to me as I can go there any time I want. The people watching can be very entertaining. The other time I enjoy it is the times when there's live music. The offerings are usually ecletic and quite entertaining.
I met here for a haunted tour I saw advertise on TripAdvisor. I don't remember the young lady's name who guided us, but she was very engaging with a great sense of humor!
There are chairs and tables in the square and there was live music when we were there. There are little cafes with food and drinks. It's a great place to relax to take a break from walking around the city.
I lived in The City from 1983 through '86, & l ved almost every minute of it. Visiting San Francisco now is a shocking difference in most regards than what it was in the mid-eighties. Some things haven't changed, and Union Square Civic Center is one of them !!!!!
Beautiful probably only spiral road with blooming flowers on sides, vehicles descend slowly on sloppy terrain one behind another.must pass through here for a memorable experience.
Just a simple area, sometimes has art and music and even a skating rink during winter but not much else going on. Good if you want to see construction or take a second to rest.
It always good to be there because its so vibrant experience. People from everywhere shopping, eating and enjoying the stores, the lights definitely its a place to visit once a week.
Great spot on Christmas Eve/Day. Huge Christmas tree, bring family for a good stroll around. Driving and parking would probably suck . Take the Grinch to drive.
Disappointed. Some big shop names. But seen it before. Nothing that makes this a place exceptional. The only thing of merit is an ice skating rink. But that also has been done.
A nice place to stop and people watch. The huge Macy's across the street is a good way to kill a few hours. The art vendors on the weekends are also quite enjoyable.
Not quite as busy or large as Times Square in NY or Toronto's Yonge Dundas Square, but it's a nice place to visit and all the shops around are of similar quality.
I like to sit here and people watch. There artists displaying their works, a variety of festivals and concerts, 2 great cafes. Perfect place to rest your feet and caffeinate while you are shopping and take in the sights of downtown.
Union Square is a great example of what happens when you prioritize people over cars. The space is full of people enjoying lunch, coffee, or just seeing the sights. One suggestion for the city would be to hire a few homeless outreach team members to talk to people in need of shelter or mental health services in area.
The holiday season always brings me 2x the amount of happiness compared to a daily basis emotion. Its colorfully, festive and full of life. I enjoy strolling around the area .
Union Square is in the center of the shopping district. It has great restaurants, fabulous Hotel, and stand-alone high-end boutiques from MCM, YSL, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and more. It also has stores such as Niketown, Urban Outfitters, Uniqlo, Express, Forever 21, Old Navy, Gap, and a flagship T-Mobile store just to name a few. It also has a huge Macy's, I think the largest in the West Coast, and Saks Fifth Avenue just to name two. You can spend the whole day shopping here. And so many restaurants to choose from to satisfy any International palette
