Seemed dirty and a haven for homeless people. The square is surrounded by great shopping opportuunities, Apple, The Cheesecake Factory, Dior, and more. Worth looking at but nothing too special.

I stayed at a hotel in Union Square on my last visit. It was close to everything we wanted to see. We were able to walk to many places. There are a lot of good restaurants and a shopping mall.

Honestly, this square is overrated. However, if you're not from the area, it's definitely worth a walk through. Don't be on of THOSE people though: put away the iPads and expensive equipment, make your kids hand over electronics. Union Square showcases both the high economic standing of the Financial District, and the extreme poverty and neglect that many people live in here.
Recommendations: Walk towards China Town to get boba tea and snacks, and keep walking to get to North Beach where the pizza is good. Try and snag a cablecar ride up and over the hill to Ghirardelli Square, which is cuter and much more affordable.

Just passed through but I love the heart sculptures. There is currently construction on one side so the sidewalk is closed and one has to climb the stairs or cross the street to go around. Seems like a nice place to get something to drink at the coffee shop when it is warm outside.

Pretty cool place to visit and catch a cable car. Can be very crowded during peak hours though.

Advise catching cars at the far end of the park and just hopping on from the wrong side (avoid the lineup of tourists, just hop on and pay when asked to do so) as well as walking a block away to call a taxi or rideshare.

Filthy. Homeless people are everywhere. San Fran has really gone down hill and needs a lot of work. Only in California would you be looking at three different trash cans for three different items you are throwing away (compost, recycle and landfill) and see trash all over the place right next to it. San Fran needs a makeover bad. This the worst I ve ever seen it.

Union Square is a normally delightful place to visit during the day and especially during the holidays. Surrounded by world class stores such as Barneys, Saks 5th Avenue and St Francis hotel, this picturesque square is a must see while visiting "The City" by the bay. A word of caution however as there is a lot of construction in the area due to the subway extension. Also, as by now most people are aware, there are a lot of panhandlers in the area. Straying a few blocks over could get the unfamiliar into trouble as The City's Tenderloin district (notorious for crime and car break ins) borders one side. Generally, I'd say stay with the crowd and you will be fine. For those trying to decide when to visit, by far Christmas is the best as the square hosts an ice skating rink and one of the tallest Christmas trees anywhere. I could go on and on but I definitely recommend visiting. I gave 3 stars only because of the construction and the panhandlers. The good news is that the construction is beginning to draw to an end. However, as for the panhandlers... well, that remains to be fully addressed

Its a pretty nice area. I stayed in the Sir Francis Drake, the area itself is comprised of luxury shops, and is similar to Rodeo Drive, except it doesn't have that luxurious feel and look.

Had a few beers here with my coworkers after a 12 hour day 200 feet below(central subway station) and noticed the same element of riff raff that I remember seeing way back before the first renovation. It kind of ruins the atmosphere.

Union Square used to be one of my favorite spots in San Francisco, however, it has gone downhill with the ever growing homeless population in the city as well as the crazy amount of junkies. I like the heart sculptures around the square as well as the gardens and coffee shops, but to me it's just average.

Although undergoing some like construction at the moment this is a beautiful place nice scenery and beautiful people out doing what beautiful people like to do, spend money. Tourists as far as the eye can see.

Over-rated tourist attraction... unless of course the only reason you visited was to shop at shops you can find in every big city around the world.
Watch out for phone thieves and pick-pockets!

Sure it's full of tourists with selfie sticks, but Union Square is surrounded by great places to eat and shop, and is worth a stop. Winter Walk is always great as it gets near Xmas. Just avoid the hotels, you can go 2 blocks away and find cheaper hotels that are still just as nice and still easily within walking distance of FIDI, Chinatown, Nob Hill, the Tenderloin, etc.

A must for a selfie in SF. BUT: Just say NO to the panhandlers who want to help you take a pic. It s not nice but you have to take care of yourself and they won t respect your space or boundaries. Say no and take your selfie. Then move on if they won t leave you along. In other words: do not allow helpful strangers to take your pic with your phone

Open space concourse with seating and relaxing with close-by coffee and expresso cafes. It is also the beginning of the upper-class pricey stores, including Apple, Winston, Dior, and others. South from Union Square is the Macy's and their food court. There's a parking garage underneath Union Square. The area is usually graced by tourism, bus stops, music, sculptures, and exhibits.

Definitely a must-see for visitors. There are so many shopping places and fun little cafes. San Francisco definitely has its charm. Even if you just go into places that you can't afford, it's still a fun time!!
