This is one of the best spots in The City. Of course its one of the first I checked out since I was staying nearby. I quickly learned that here one can see all forms of life. The rich, the richer, and the richest. Not that I can tell the difference. Also the poor, the poorer, and the poorest. Artists of different media show off their wares here and it's an ice skating rink in winter. The middle, the middler, and thr middlest are also represented here (either working the tour buses and surrounding businesses, maybe selling some or on vacation patronizing those same businesses and buses). You can see a Lamborghini parked or somebody defacating on the sidewalk. You can easily hear at least five languages being rattled off within a 20 ft radius, and accents from all over the country. Still alot of work going on there. Don't exactly know what it is thats going on but looking forward to seeing it completed. I like to sit atound here and read sometimes eat. The coolest and most fashionable (Apple, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Nike and many many others) surround this square. Catch a tour bus, rent a bike, go shoppinging, or just people watch. I could go on , but why waste my time typing about something I believe you'll enjoy more visiting rather than reading about. See you there.

Beautiful at night, surrounded by lit up shops and landscaping. Cool and creative heart statues at the corners too. Great for a stroll at night if you're nearby. The weather may be chilly though, so I recommend bringing a jacket.

One of the historical landmark of American civil war memorial "Union Square" is the midst of northern San fransisco down town, it is the centre place for shopping, hotel, boutiques, art galleries and reasturants district. Major places of interests are located closed to this area of the town.
Major tourist destination and typical cosmopolitan getaway with access to cable cars, metro and public transport, big hotels to medium inns and hostels.
Stayed close by because of accessibility to major tourist attractions, transport and hotels.

The coffe shops are way overpriced. The staff does not even clean up the tables. I saw tourist literally walk away from the shops there. Great during the Holidays to see an event but needs more care. It's a shame.

Great place for shopping and to hang out. Also great to meet people from all over the world. This is the number one shopping district in San Francisco and there is always something going on. Right now a lot of construction is going on in this area, which will still take a while to be finished.

Union Square is essentially the center of San Francisco. It is surrounded by signature hotels, such as the St. Francis, Sir Francis Drake and Gramd Hyatt. The square itself offers a civic open space where people my freely gather to eat al fresco, enjoy a coffee and people watch. Of course, the name in the contemporary vernacular is synonymous with high end shopping. Few people actually take the time to ask what is Union Square and where did it get its name? Union Square is named in honor of the Union Army of the Civil War era as that part of the city was being developed in the post-Gold Rush time of the Comstock Kings. Previously, Portsmouth Square had been the city center, known as the Plaza in the Mexican era. Union Square is an American expression of imperial might in the tradition of Rome. It features a victory column in its center commemorating Admiral Dewey's conquest of Manila Bay in 1898: the beginning of the global American empire. At the top of the column is a statue representing Minerva, the goddess of the sea. The model for that statue was none other than Alma Spreckels (before her marriage), then a much sought after courtesan in San Francisco who would later become a great patron of the arts and whose great collection would become the basis for the Palace of Legion of Honor. I always salute Big Alma when I pass by Union Square, her legacy brings a deeper meaning to the present with its hyperconsumption and ignorance of the nobler pursuits for which this city ought to be recognized.

This is a main attraction in San Fran. Just people watch. It's free. Surrounded by upscale shops and tons of restaurants, it is just around the corner from the (actual, live people) theater district. Ice skating in the winter, and a huge Christmas tree. It is gorgeous at night. Has a garage under it. And it is officially a park. See if you can spot the occasional ranger.

The hub of downtown SF - anytime of year day or night, you can feel the magic of the city sitting by the lights. If you are around winter holidays you will most likely enjoy the beautiful decorations & skating rink.

It's an interesting place to visit if you are a tourist. It is in the center of hot spots and stores, such as the Apple store and Macy's which has a great view of Union square if you dine at the Cheesecake factory on their 7th floor. Driving by is also okay. I believe there is also parking under the square.

Surrounded by high end shopping, & it's own underground parking, Union Square still brings you down to Earth. With live art exhibits, street entertainers, bustling tourists & shoppers, you still sense the laid back California vibe, from the locals relaxing on the grass steps during their lunch break.

2. Macy's, Bulgari, Tiffany's, Sak's, Apple, NY Cheesecake Factory& several others.

Union square is a beautiful, well known park in the heart of San Francisco. There is not the traditional type of city action going on there but it is very ecstatically pleasing. It is surrounded by shopping, dining and very nice hotels. Honestly, when I come to San Francisco again this will be my preferred location to stay.

Love the shops around union square. Union square during Christmas, with the tree and ice rink, is my favorite. I visited the past July and there was a lot of Construction going tut looked like it would still be there for a while.

Union Square is a fantastic area!! Their are high end shops such as Tiffany & Co,Louis Vuitton and many others. Also,I really enjoy going around the holidays. The ice skating rink is so much fun. Homeless people are abundant in this area, but that is how the city is. Do not let this deter you from visiting.

Great stroll! The few times we've taken that evening walk someone has been performing on the corner; guitar, trumpet, etc. Very cool. Don't forget to tip. They're playing their hearts out up there.

Not a lot going in the square itself. This is rather a historic landmark in the centre of the upscale shopping district of San Francisco.

Impossible to miss whilst visiting the area in San Francisco.

One of the busiest parts of the The City - filled with tourists and those living in the city or the Bay-area alike. There's construction going on for the central subway, but it's still a nice open space for people watching, grabbing some food or coffee to hang-out, or catching some of those rare sun-rays that peak through Karl the Fog. The Square is surrounded by many shops (Williams Sonoma, Macys) and hotels that give a great top view. During the Christmas holiday season, there's an ice rink they set-up and throughout the rest of the year there are various fares (art, cultural, etc.) that take place too.

A nice place to sit down and enjoyed the views. A little noisy. You can eat your snacks or lunch there. There is a cafe shop. Chairs weren't that clean at the park. It is close to many stores. It is in down town San Francisco.

I have been going to Union square a lot, and it is a very cool place in SFO but the the reason I don't give it 5 stars is mainly because of the smell. It smells like piss sometimes and weed, it is just a really weird combination, but the place is really nice specially for tourists
