Amazing campus in perpetual upgrade mode! Food at t he quad is pretty cheap for quality food.
Let me start by stating the following: THIS IS A COMMMUTER SCHOOL. If you are looking for a gigantic, generic college experience go to Berkeley. That being said, we have a lot of professors who have taught and attended great schools such as Stanford and Brown. In addition to that, you'll live in one of the greatest cities in America, so who needs that college experience!
Older campus with somewhat dated Gym facilities.
The staff seems helpful and friendly.
Its a university.
I like it
5 stars
This review is more on their commencement ceremonies rather than their faculty or campus. So my brother recently graduated with a bachelor's degree and the ceremony literally lasted over 3 hours. Although it was nice they held it this year at AT&T Park, but it really seemed like the ceremony was more about the honored guests rather than the students themselves. If it wasn't for my kid brother graduatimg, I would never make the trip knowing what the ceremony was all about. I recommend to the president of the University that if they want to honor their benefactors and trustees, they hold a separate event for them and not take away the meaning of that special day from their students.
Very nice my daughter attends this is her freshman year. Easy to navigate the campus and we do commute back and forth from the East Bay. With little traffic delays sometimes.
Go Gators! We love working at San Francisco State University.
Lovely campus, even better people.
The diversity here is amazing, and so is the culture!
I know many people who have graduated from SFSU and they only have great things to say about it.
A great university with a beautiful campus. Most staff are friendly and willing to help. There are many programs on campus that you can be involved in. About half of the students that go to SF State are commuter students meaning they don t live on campus. If you live in San Francisco and wanting to save a lot of money from college, then this is the school for you. It can save a lot from tuition costs.
Decent college to go to with a wide variety of classes.
I currently attend to school and while I do like it, there are some things that could be nicer around campus.
If you need to use the restrooms, be sure to go to the library.
I've enjoyed my time on campus and will be sad to say goodbye come May 2014.
No one cares about u. Not housing, not FA, not professors, most definitely not the on campus psychologist of all people lol. On campus housing is a joke too.
Love it, nice clean campus. Very friendly welcoming staff and the folks attending already are so willing to help and make you feel welcome.
They need to hire better professors who actually care about the students.
the level of education is not worth its cost at sfsu. find another university
This school does not care about students. Housing office is rude and unprofessional and the administration is just unorganized. No one seems to know anything when I call them. I felt lonely and worthless on this campus.
Was here for the international conference in summer 2012. Stayed in a student dormitory. Lovely place. Nice campus. Foggy due to a very specific climate.
Surprisingly, one of the least intellectual communities in SF.
SFSU is a great school with many wonderful faculty on a beautiful campus with a great new library and lots of engaged students tucked into the southwest corner of the city past Stonestown Mall on the M Line and not far from Lake Merced and Lakeshore Elementary School and Lowell High School.
A walk through the university is relaxing. It is right next to Stonestown Shopping Center.
I am a former student of SFSU. Well, in my pursuit for higher education, I emailed the admissions & records office 1/21/14 requesting they send a copy of my official transcript to another college. I have YET to get ANY response from this email!
The school is not for everyone but it worked great for me. Most of my major classes were small and I could develop relationship with professors. Convenient and able to get stuff done. If you want a party school experience maybe look elsewhere or consider joining Greek life but this school has a great city surrounding it if you wanna party as well.
Beautiful campus - spacious and open, one could forget that they're in San Francisco.
There are many professional and dedicated instructors, and staff. Having supports from hard-working fellow students is what got me through.
I was there for a visit and saw a professor beginning to swing a bike lock towards all the white kids including me. I told the police and asked why they did nothing, they said that it was a good question for the Chief of Police.
That would be great if they had programs to put you into trainings and companies. You will not be as competitive as new-grads from UCs and upper class universities
San Francisco State University is a public university in San Francisco. As part of the 23-campus California State University system, the university offers 118 different bachelor's degrees, 94 master's degrees, 5 doctoral degrees, along with 26 teaching credentials among six academic colleges.
Smaller classes, taught by actual faculty members, brand new library, diverse classmates coming from all over the world. This is a great place whether you want to take one class or get a degree. Transferring credits between other 4 year institutions is easy and it is home to one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
I love my university and people there! Super good campus and good professors :)
I love my university.
When I was attending I was very happy. The professors really challenged me and helped me explore myself.
Even now as we transition to online, I respect SFSU for being one of the first universities in the NATION to lock down due to coronavirus and to announce online classes. As the CALSTATE system requires all students to take at LEAST one ethnic studies course, SFSU has already required all of it's students to take one. San Francisco State University has always been ahead of the game in many ways and teachers here are constantly looking to improve themselves. I am proud to be a gator
Recently got accepted to the School of Cinema as a first-time freshman for the Fall 2017, and as much as I can say I am pretty excited to see where the next four years will take place. Cannot imagine anywhere else I would enjoy spending the journey at than San Francisco State University.
I wish I could have got my degree from here, but once again got distracted from school, messing with some welfare thot.
Great school !! Great amenities like library , gym !
Have lot of fun over the weekends .
In two weeks, I am about to complete my first year here at San Francisco State. The professors are amazing! Every course I had was challenging, and at the same time, encouraging in terms of learning more everyday. So if you're worried you won't be prepared for the outside world - TRUST me, you will. I still remember stuff I learned from Stats and Geology! And they're not my best subjects. Yes, the fog kills the environment sometimes, but the afternoons/evenings are breathtaking! You're in the city - you'll definitely get to the experience the party college hype, and I highly recommend anyone to give SFSU a chance. As of Junior year, I am going to study abroad in order to finish and get a wonderful experience with my major and minor courses! Folly of me to come into SFSU with the mentality that it was the worst choice for me - I know can say that coming to SF State was the best choice I made! By far!
Great campus and professors. Perfect location outside of the downtown madness.
Good school but not great. Great experience depends on your major and the program offered, not all are that great.
I'm currently studying at SFSU... I'm finishing my second bach with major in Dietetics! the best word for this school = UNORGANIZED! if you like to be rushing with deadlines relating with adm school situations, go ahead! Basically you have to figure it our by your own... Enrollment is crazy every semester, classes are always full (that means be sure to be there 20 min before class so you can get a sit and avoid being sitting in the floor)...I got my first bachelor from my country Mexico, I'm paying 4 times more, and really not even get able to get a sit on class & decent hands on experience... Amazed this is first world!
It's a beautiful campus ...but the standard of living off campus is high ...and living on campus u still have to care about bacteria and the great amounts of islamophobics...also I am frightened for the disrespect for my daughter's hijab...I am frightened for her because she just recently started wearing hijab mashAllah (all praises to the the most high) but the student who showed us around was named Tyler and he was so polite and nice. He told us about scholarships and the difference between a loan forgiveness program called Habitat for Humanities and the domestic version of peacecorp and about Americorps....my daughter, Melody is really excited but we would like to compare different tuition prices with her Nuh step dad.
Basically this university is worst for engineering that too electrical major. 3 professor taking most of the classes.Engineering adviser who always thinks as if he is the KING of some kingdom and students are slave. And thinks as if engineering department is not a part of SFSU. Always say something and do something else. It better to chose some lower grade university instead of this, if you want to survive in Bay Area. Policies on paper are different from the one which are available on their website.
Like most academic institutions, SFSU has its strengths and weaknesses. Overall, I have enjoyed my time here.
Pros: commuter-friendly with free student shuttles and now the upcoming discount deal (albeit a controversial one) with muni and BART. Many food options both on campus and at the nearby mall. Small, easy to navigate campus with mostly new or updated buildings. The iLearn course materials sharing system also has been getting better and better every semester I've been here. There are many professional and dedicated instructors and staff.
Cons: a "new" online registration system/student portal that essentially only works on internet explorer and looks like something made a decade or two ago, definitely not user friendly and rather confusing. Compared to the system UCSB used when I was there EIGHT years ago it's a disappointment. The registrar and other student services offices are notorious for outright LOSING your paperwork with no explanation. Keeping up with things and nagging these people to make sure they're doing their job is crucial if you are applying for other schools or scholarships you need your transcripts or other documents sent to. It's rather depressing in this day and age that lost paperwork can still happen on such a grand scale. Don't fall through the cracks!
Finally, if you can take most of your courses at a community college first, do so. It's cheaper and probably closer to where you live, plus also likely easier to get into the classes you need. Transfer in later to get your degree. That goes for almost any school, not just SFSU.
San Francisco State University (commonly referred to as San Francisco State, SF State and SFSU) is a public university in San Francisco. Their library is amazing. The curriculum is very diverse. Watch out for skunks at night!
Please advise why is it so hard for a student to get an apt. with a counselor!
As a student doing an MA in TESOL at SFSU, I will say that the program is internationally known for creating innovators in the field. The faculty are amazingly helpful and supportive. Academics aside, the campus is beautiful with all of the trees, art, and gardens and squares. The library is up to date and provides a variety of different settings to study for groups or for those who prefer quiet. They also have a good variety of food/drink services on campus from Vietnamese Pho and Banh Mi, to Mexican food, to Boba and even beer! which makes it easy to grab a good bite and get back to class in flash.
Very lucky to study here !! It's great atmosphere and the staffs are very friendly !!
Is anybody in the office at all?? I'm really tired of pre-recorded messages.
Beautiful Campus, it's in SF, and it's a step above City College. BUT If you can't get in anywhere else like SDSU and other upper ranking state colleges or UC schools..this is where you might get accepted. It is not competitive at all and they seem to accept ANYONE, even with 2.0 GPA and poor SATs.
In my four years of attending, I have had a great time at San Francisco State. I was able to get most of the classes I wanted, I met great people, the food is great, the campus is beautiful, it's right by Lake Merced and Ocean Beach, and of course it's in one of the best cities in the world!
I cannot say I've had any problems with SFSU; I genuinely had a great time attending here, and I'm so sad that I'll be graduating this coming spring ):
Though some may look down upon CSU's, I personally believe that I got a good deal on my education. Met some great professors and soon to get a Bachelors of Science without breaking the bank too badly.
They just added a beautiful new library about a year ago, and a brand new soccer field by the dorms! Muni transportation runs conveniently right in front of the campus, and there is a free shuttle bus that transports students to and from the Daly City BART station (about a 5-10 minute ride). I can't help but feel lucky being able to attend SFSU; loved my classes, my classmates, got to experience all the wonders of San Francisco, and was able to bop over to the beach easily!
It's a pretty good school, it does the job with no big problems
I believe this school has it's goods and bads, but I still like this school over all.
Budget cuts aren't the schools fault, it's the state's fault, so people reviewing this school based on their difficulty on getting classes might as well move to Nevada or Arizona because it's happening all over California. UC's and CSU's...
Yes, getting classes are hard, but I think the campus is nice and chill. People are really friendly and diverse. Studying abroad is also a great option: Same tuition. (I'm going next semester.)
It's a commuter campus like any other CSU, so sometimes the campus is dead on weekends, but you can still make the best of it. It's not like the campus is completely empty. On campus student's linger around in the residential part of campus near the Village and Mary Park/Ward.
Btw, commuting DOES NOT give you an excuse to not join clubs, frat or sorority, and interact with others. I hate whiny brats who complain about not having friends...Go make friends! The opportunity is in front of you all the time!
Professors vary; some are excellent, some not so much.
Grass is super green (don't know if that matters).
Overall, I've had pretty good experiences here starting off as a freshman in the dorms. Made a good set of friends that I'll probably be friends with for life. And learned good life experiences. Now I'm a junior.
Good luck all!...Actually start making your own good luck. :)
Unhappy how this school is handling the 'dreadlocks' incident.
SFSU, with an incredibly small footprint, is a haven for education in "The City." It doesn't match the progressive nature of San Francisco, it leads it. Ever since the student strike of 1968, when the field of Ethnic Studies was created, this campus has led the charge in Social Justice. Now every student takes upper division GE in Environmental Sustainability, Global Perspectives, Social Justice and Racial and Ethnic Minorities. It quietly works to inspire student success, while empowering them to change the world. Berkley may get more press because of protest violence that often erupts, but SFSU makes Berkley look like a children's playground and on a sliver of the budget.
My alma mater. I can tell people I graduated from college and it was fairly cheap. However, you can learn more with a public library card.
Great school.... Great spirit ... philosophy in religion.. I missed my classmates here.. I hope they all succeed in life...
This place has inspired many people I know, and many more people that I don't know!
Amazing professors, nice campus. I love the business school
Campus is expanding in the middle of SF, convenient on-campus clinic/pharmacy, helpful career resources and advising, clean and brand-new gym, fun college games and a lot of student organizations.
Awful school, for your sake please do not ever attend this abominable school. Terrible teachers, AWFUL counselors that single handed advice have cause me to stay an extra semester, and the only lucky part of my education here is that I lived off campus and did not have to deal with their abundant security issues.
I will accept it 4 years later. I will work in the university and keep my grades high. After years, I will read this comment and be amazed by my determination.
Great college with lots of opportunities if you look for them. Dorm living is recommended to experience the entire college at its true form. The culture here is also revolutionary: the teachers and staff seem to really care about not only the intellectual health but also the mental health of their students.
The campus is set back in the city. The classes are easy to semi-challenging. If only the tuition was lower for students attending here.
My younger cousin went to school there and had a lot of questions transferring credits. Sarah was the one that helped him and made the experience so smooth. I have heard nothing but good things from him being there.
A world class institution. It offers amazing programs and opportunities for internships and study abroad to students of all classes and colors for still the best price around.
Very involved and covers a lot of majors for being relatively inexpensive compared to other universities
Great building and friendly people. Just wish I was given more advice on how to use what I've learned
A beautiful campus with a renovated library! Big open space in the middle of the campus and there are always events going on for people to go check out. Certain professors are life-changing, and others not so much.
Cons: Housing is prohibitively expensive. It was very difficult to enroll in required courses, which delayed graduation for most of my friends. Too many unnecessary requirements to graduate. I ended up transferring as a result.
Pros: Nice campus. Very strong local job market for working students.
