Staff was very helpful and polite rooms was very small but shabby my room had heating full on which you couldn't turn off was reported but when we come back to room later that night heating was still on grab rail on bath was badly damaged and sink had a large crack it in and breakfast was barely warm also several of my friends who stayed also made complaints also drinks was very expensive for a hotel which was meant to have a very big reputation I was very disappointed and I wont be going back there again I also lodged a complaint on checking out which I'm waiting to hear from the manager
The hotel went out of its way to accommodate all the requests asked of them. The food and rooms were excellent. Highly recommend . Thank you for a v happy time
Relying on its past reputation. Decaying grandeur. Needs a lot of money spent on it inside and out.
Food good (especially breakfast), staff vey welcoming, room terrible
Very relaxing atmosphere and one amazing golf course
Food good bedrooms nice. Unfortunately restaurant staff bit of a shambles due to head lady. Overall very good. Will go again
I would like to thank seldon park for making my wedding day a wonderful day. All the staff as fanatic. Everything they offered was done. The food was the best I've had. And that was from everyone.
If you want to book a wedding hear you will have a great time. I would like to thank holly who took over our planing a month before the date but had everything covered.
A change of ownership lately, still learning. Not as good as it was before.
Good value ladies spa day pamper package with Groupon. Very friendly staff and excellent treatments. Large 2 course lunch with wine included in the price.
Wonderful venue for a family wedding. Pleasant and helpful staff, stunning grounds and amazing setting. Food and drink was excellent all weekend. Breakfast in bed was fantastic!
For the price of the room and the facilities available a very good hotel. The room was large, clean and well equipped. Staff were friendly, helfull and very welcoming. If you are looking for a base outside London, a room for a weekend or just some where to come and switch off and stay and excellent choice.
My weekend stay at Devere Selsdon Estate has been a pleasurable experience from beginning to reluctant end!
From the refurbished room overlooking the beautiful grounds, the excellent dinner and breakfast to the wonderful staff who provided an exemplary service.
Thank you and well done for giving this amazing building the the attention it deserves.
Visited for afternoon tea just before Christmas. This was excellent and plentiful in terms of the food quality, value for money and service. However, it was very cold in the Orangery and restaurant. Practically needed a blanket. I would definitely return but in the spring and summer months when I can enjoy the gardens and facilities more fully.
Nice settng for a drink but the service staff seem to be in constant disarray. Ordering a pint of Guinness and 2 gin and tonics was a bit of an ordeal. Even then failed to serve the G&T combinations advertised in the cocktail menu. It was easier to accept what was offered. Staff were constantly wandering around with plates of food and no idea where to take them. Other reviews seem to reflect there's not much organisation going on and the staff seem demoralised.
The room was spacious and clean. Some of the building looks a little run down.
Service was great. Was there for a work christmas party and it was amazing. Really pretty place, and loved the swimming pool and jacuzzi
I would have given it 5 stars because I'm still smiling now after a fantastic stay. My partner surprised me for my birthday with an overnight stay. We stayed in a suite over looking the beautiful gardens. It was beautiful. A bottle of champagne (on ice) was also left in the room for us. So thoughtful. After a quick costume change we headed to the pool, jacuzzi and sauna. It was quite empty so it was perfect because the changing rooms are is very small.
The restaurant was the reason for my 4 star rating. We waited an hour for our food as it was understaffed possible due 2 weddings being held at the hotel. The food wasn't the best either. After dinner we had a lovely game of Trivial Persuit in our room. It's worth noting that due to the functions that were on it was noisy until about midnight at which point my head hit the pillow thanks to the champers. The bed was just divine. I miss it already. I slept so well despite it being quite warm in the room. A fan is provided but it wasn't needed. Breakfast was very busy and noisy. Not much of a hot veggie choice and the service was Terrible. We ate and left very quickly. Regardless of that, I am looking forward to visiting again - hopefully when it is less busy.
Place is beautifull but was let down by the food, which was mediocre at best and very poor at worst. Stay away from the tray bake brownie
Was only there for the day. Seems like a good hotel.
I was looking forward to spend a couple of nights at De Vere. Unfortunately the standard is very low (those are comments from me and my colleagues). Rooms are very used, the service is quite bad (Great example: salad with pasta came with rice instead of pasta, nothing happened after we mentioned the obvious mistake), the conference facilities are poor, only a couple of power sockets in whole room unless you specifically ask for more.
The bar closed on Monday evening at 22:30 which was really strange for such a hotel. We ate a dinner once in the bar and the food is much better than in the restaurant.
Love the golf course and the staff (especially Caroline) could not be more helpful. Course is challenging but playable with excellent greens and represents great value for money. Food is good but I've not stayed there so can't comment on the rooms (hence 4 stars.)
Beautiful hotel with excellent grounds but somewhat dated rooms
When we arrived at the counter the receptionist could not find our
booking confirmation. They don't keep track of their bookings! I
showed her a copy of the pre-paid receipt and she said it was no where
in their system. She then proceeded to rudely tell me to call the
travel agency where I booked the hotel and didn't even offer to let me
use their phone. Hotwire called them with the confirmation and their
manager came out and said that they have no access to their fax
machine after 5:30pm so they had no way of confirming the booking.
What front office of a large hotel has no access to their fax machine
after 5:30pm? I heard the manager get rude on the phone with Hotwire.
Although we had the receipt and Hotwire called them and said they
faxed the pre-paid confirmation they offered no assistance to help us
at 10pm at night. The manager and staff ignored us while we tried to
sort this out over an hour with Hotwire and their hotel. The staff
probably saw us come into their "golf club" hotel looking tired worn
with my back pack and decided we were not worthy of great customer
service. During this Europe trip, I stayed in nearly 20 different
hotels, I have never felt so uncomfortable and rejected by a hotel
staff. Most hotels would offer to book you at their normal rate until
they got their confirmation in the morning. Especially a guest who is
arriving at 10pm and has no option. They clearly thought we were
unworthy of staying in their property. They didn't even offer to book
us at their current rate. If I could, I would give this hotel a zero
rating. Do not stay here unless you want to be automatically judged
by the rude staff. This is obviously an elitist hotel. They need
lessons from a real 4 or 5 star hotel. That is the reason they have to
sell their empty rooms on Hotwire and Priceline. This is the worst
hotel in Croydon London. Luckily, we ended up booking at the Double
Tree 4 star in Islington and that hotel and staff were incredible!
Big difference.
Loved it. Staff couldnt do enough. My room was excellent. Food and facilities were great. Lovely setting. Very relaxing
An historic hotel that's ideal for a romantic weekend and offers all the services you'd expect for such an event (great restaurant, room service etc.) with a great spa experience also available. The rooms were well decorated and the bathrooms were adequate. The buffet breakfast on offer (continental or English) was ok.
Lovely old building but seriously dated and run down. Needs some significant investment.
A wonderful place to relax and watch time go by. Food good and drinks are reasonable. Staff are friendly and welcoming.
Fantastic setting, reasonably priced but rooms are a little tired and would benefit from an update. Leisure facilities also run down, lots of gym equipment out of order, changing areas and pool areas desperate for a steam clean. Staff friendly, this place could be amazing with a little investment. Tasty breakfast, lovely views/grounds.
Very nice, food looked nice and updated rooms were very nice. However the non updated rooms aren't as nice and there is no air con due to it being a listed building.
Okay where can I start,
The rooms are very royal but it is very buzzling to get to your room the place is basically a maze.
The food is fine but they can do better.
The staff is very nice and helpful, diverse too.
I loved the surrounding environment and it is really a safe haven for any one who wants to take a break
I booked a party at Selsdon Estate and will never do it again! Whilst everyone enjoyed the evening, there were a few avoidable hiccups on the night (which I could have done without, as I spent over an hour trying to deal with one of them!). The whole process from booking the party room all the way through to the party itself was stressful and exhausting and there was a severe lack of customer service. Beware!!
Stayed here for one night while working in the area, I stay in de'vere hotels a few times a year, as always the staff were very helpful, and the hotel has great facilities, breakfast was great, good parking and the room was clean
But..
The decor in the room was in desperate need of a makeover, there was damp on the wall, and black mould on the window frame. This is not in keeping with other de'vere hotels I've stayed in, which are usually impeccable.
My 3 stars was purely down to the decor, can't fault the service or staff in any way at all.
Stunning place and friendly service. Took some time to order room service as phone was broken and when we finally managed to get through to reception we had an old menu in the room so had to wait for the updated one to come. And we only got one towel between 2 of us. Other than that lovely.
I would definitely go back for the spa, the food was delicious, the building was to hot and it would make a huge difference if they refurbished. I was craving another chicken burger all week.
Hotel and staff are perfect 5 star golf course however is less than 1 star probably the worst looked after golf course i have ever played a real shame
Great place for society golf, wonderful breakfast, top golf course, fantastic views back at the 19th having a beer looking out at the golf course
Had a complimentary nights stay after a bad previous experience. However this time around it was like staying in a different hotel. The room was modern and fully equipped with everything for a luxury nights stay. Food in the restaurant was exquisite, spa facilities where amazing and the service at the hotel was impeccable. Lovely nights stay for a couples get away.
Nice function place. Rooms and function venue very good
The 1st room we checked into was not the type of room we paid for but due to the hotel being fully booked they couldn't/wouldn't move us. Add insult to injury the sheets were dirty when we went to get into bed.
They moved us for our 2nd night to a room type we paid for. However the sheets in this room were also dirty and there were also 2 half drunk pint of beer still sitting on the window seal.
The hotel move us again and the room was nice.
The reason why i gave it 2 star over the one it deserves is that the duty manager was amazing is trying to sort out the issues with the cleaning staff and making sure we was looked after.
Only one of three radiators worked in room a little bit cold in February
Beautiful historic building, well maintained and maintained. Small but pleasant and clean room, very quiet. Rich breakfast in a beautiful room. Excellent value for money.
Very nice hotel would definitely use again. Great views over the golf course from our room. And the spa facilities were very nice too.
Really run down. Can do with a complete overhaul... Golf Course greens all need replacement. Quite sad at how quickly it has depreciated...
We've booked our premier Windows Christmas party here and it's a great place to meet other business people would highly recommend
I was part of a group of 40, and we were looked after very well. A large building with great character set in beautiful surroundings.
Avoid at all costs - only here because of work. In no way a 4* hotel. Shabby rooms. Incredibly rude staff. I checked in and had to wait a very long time whilst the receptionist mended the printer. I was then sent to a room with no lights or electrics working. My next room, the receptionist told me smugly was "very quiet". Very basic room for a 4*, there was music and bass blaring through the floor at 23.00 on a midweek night. When I phoned to voice my dissatisfaction I was talked over and frankly insulted. Avoid, avoid, avoid! I stay in lots of mid range hotels and never write reviews like this, but don not stay here unless you have to!
I have not been to the hotel since being taken over by De Vere. It has been refurbished to some extent, but to make it into a good 3 star hotel.
Gone are the glory days when one of the FA Cup final teams stayed before the match..
As they say, ' it is what it is" and times move on.
I was here for a conference and overnight stay. Very helpful staff and a lovely old building, but it's SO big and clearly hasn't been well maintained over the years so there's lots to do.
Everything is just a bit tired really. There's been some renovations like the bar area for example, but the windows are a bit draughty, the carpets are a bit threadbare, the lifts are a bit clanky etc. You get the picture.
I didn't see the spa, gym or pool or play the golf course.
Decor has been updated, much younger more efficient staff. Food has definitely improved since the days of Selsdon Park Hotel. A welcomed change because the grounds are beautiful.
Beautifull and your staff and tostmaster excellent catering for all our needs and making us feel welcome
The bar staff are extremely friendly and helpful... A good laugh too. The bed was a little hard and the maze of twee wooden beamed corridors was was a nightmare to get lost in but all in all a lovely experience
Good landscape for relaxation. Ask questions about food when booking for a group though.
Attended a conference here. Room was large and clean, the food was good, and the view of the golf course was great.
Beautiful setting in stunning grounds. This visit was for a wedding venue which was superb but I've also attended the spa for a day previously. Hotel, Golf Grounds, Eatery, Bar, Spa! It has it all and worth a visit
Helpful staff, good food, great outdoor and indoor facilities. Rooms are cosy. Was good stay.
great place, service good, facilities are good and location just scenic ! only one slight improvement I'd recommend is the heating in the room & bathroom to have better control (thermostat)
Visited for the day for a round of golf. Staff were very friendly and it's a beautiful hotel, the golf course did need some TLC however although it is in stunning grounds. Good value though and worth a visit.
We were looking for a venue for my mother's 100th birthday. The staff were very helpful showing us the most suitable suite even though we had arrived unannounced. Looking forward to booking the venue
A delicious high tea. They provided a lovely variety of gluten free food.
We always stay here when we can, and we recommend this place to all our family and friends.
The staff are very polite and helpful.
The rooms are amazing with great views.
The restaurant downstairs serves locely food and does overlook the lawns. The buffet breakfast is truly scrumptious.
Booked for Golf, and signs were saying only pre-bookings allowed. Arrived 10min late for 3:30 tee time. Starter said she couldn't get us out until 6:10 as it was fully booked! Fair enough but she let another group out who was late and took further ad-hoc bookings right in front of me. Luckily we found somewhere else who was a lot more accommodating. Lost my money for the three of us. Really poor that she could not squeeze us in like the other group she let through.
Wonderful old historic building period great service, very nice staff. Beautiful grounds with a modern golf course
We chose Selsdon Park to host our event. An absolute travesty. Room bookings weren't kept track of. Some of our guests found their luggage moved and their room usurped within two hours of arriving. Complimentary hampers we had provided and assembled weren't distributed appropriately and many went missing. After the event a number of our guests were quite reasonably having a drink in their room. The night manager - Marcus, who has been mentioned before in this thread - instead of politely asking them to keep the noise down or move elsewhere (the 24-hour bar that we had been promised, for example, which had been closed at 2am) stormed into the room flashing a torch and was incredibly discourteous to our guests, telling them to 'go to bed'. He was a horrible little man with a short fuse and even less diplomacy.
The catalogue of errors is considerably more extensive. In short, Fawlty Towers.
Great staff, good food for casual dining in lounge bar
What a stunning hotel and grounds. Unfortunately it was let down by our room which was extremely small and in dire need of some TLC. We spoke to reception, however, and were informed that they are due a refit. The photos you see of the rooms are the superior and deluxe rooms!! We had a beautiful meal in their stunning restaurant, as was breakfast. Do not be put off going, just try and book one of the nicer rooms.
Beautiful setting and great staff, afternoon tea was great and we were well accommodated
