this place should be amazing - very cool decor, good bars downstairs and up, excellent acoustics...

however I don't know why exactly but it turned out to be a very frustrating experience to see an artist here. I think the bottom line is that both floors are totally flat and the stage too low. good luck seeing the artist unless:

1. you're very tall
2. you're in the front few rows on the floor
3. you're at the railing on the balcony
4. you view the show using a phone on a selfie stick while wishing you had stayed home cause you could have been in your pyjamas by now

given all the amazing venues in SF we'll be avoiding this one until they build a taller stage and/or post a "no greedy sightline douchebags" rule at the balcony railing.

This venue is amazing. Super cool vibes. There's a big bar in the back and a mezzanine for larger crowds. I saw Moon Hooch here and the lower level was packed. There's seating on the sides if you get to the venue early enough. The venue and stage kind of have a theatrical look to it which is really cool. There's a bowling alley attached also. Free WiFi too.

This is so friggin awesome! I was saddened for the City to lose such an iconic place like the Skye. I was grateful to have seen the world renowned DJ's that I had.
The new place looks amazing, I can't wait to revisit an old friend when Deorro stops by in June!

This is the reincarnation of Ruby Skye minus the slide. We went to private event so if you had your ticket, east to get free on Eventbrite no waiting in line. Great full bar, lots of room to dance, even found a seat, decent catered food and open bar what's not to like, too loud of course!

Remodeled in 2018 (or 2017?) for one of the cleanest live-music venues in S.F. They have a nice bar and upstairs viewing area for claustrophobic short people ( and anybody else really). Good sound and really modern lighting setup. I hope it stays clean and nice over the coming years.

Excellent sight lines in a grand old venue that began life as The Sons of The Golden West building built circa 1912. The August in the title was the first name of the architect August Goonie Headman who designed this beaux arts beauty just after studying at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris circa 1908. A brochure commemorating the opening of the building in 1912, described the interior of the new, high-rise "parlor": "The building contains one of the largest and best-appointed assembly halls for dances, concerts and entertainments in California... Over the main assembly hall is the largest steel truss ever built in California, and which supports the floors above." The venue is now booked by he corporation Live Nation who start shows quite promptly, oft with no opening acts. They have abundant security and zealous door staff who will wand, pat down and confiscate chewing gum, and cameras. If you need to check any items you will have to go downstairs to the faux bowling alley, pay $5 per item, and be rewarded with additional re-wanding and patting down upon reentry. Sound is pretty good, views of the stage from the floor are good, or in the balcony if you can get in the front of the railings early, otherwise you won't see much once crowds bunch up. There are two bars accessible within views of the concert performance, one downstairs and a second upstairs as well near where the sound and lighting crews are stationed. Near the restrooms is a "secret" back bar overlooking Mason St that has a live tv monitor feed from the live room.

This is about the ideal sized venue for me. It's big enough to host a concert with a somewhat known band, yet small enough that you're never too far from the stage. The sound was good to me, though I'm no audiophile. The lighting made the musicians fully visible without overwhelming the ambiance of the space The bartenders were nice, and the bathroom was clean. I can't really say anything negative about the space. The only thing I would say is to take public transit. Parking is available, but very expensive, in this neighborhood.

Everyone was super nice, the music was great, acoustics we're great, the architecture is awesome. The only complaint I can think of is that the floor was sticky, but what can you expect with a mosh pit in the middle of the room. Overall, 'twas an awesome experience.

We saw the B52s there. There isn't much I can say... The show started on time, the place was clean, they served decent finger food. I do like its proximity to a few other watering holes around this hotel district.

All of the seats on the lower level were reserved for guests of the performers. None of the seats or standing areas upstairs had visibility on more than a third of the stage. But hey, $9 for a well gin and tonic sounds like a great deal. (You'll have to bring your own straw if you want it stirred though.)

Coming back to the old Ruby Skye after a long long time gave me a jitter feeling.
Walking in and the place remodeled nicely with touches on details. Structural is the same. Restrooms seems bigger with more stalls and clean (attendance frequently looked after) The back area is now a bar. The 2 side bars are now table service. Upstairs is now host control area looking down. The rest unchanged.
New concert sound system is crisp, but not enough bass for electronic music.
Security staff were nice, processed efficiently, get patrons in fast.
Overall a nice welcoming back experience

Saw the best band on the planet play here. The sound was awesome, the atmosphere was lovely, and the staff was friendly. The bizarre scenery adds to the experience. Highly recommended and the show was not pricey at all. If there is a band you want to see here, GO! If there is a band on their calendar that seems interesting, definitely go and experience the venue at least once.

Purshased VIP ticket to find out there was VIP line or VIP benefits. The venue lied to and needs to refund some money. The concert it self was good but disappointed in the representation.

this is not a review, just a question. August Hall does not open until late April 2018. How can two people rate August Hall a "one" in February when August Hall will not even open for another two months. This seems mighty unfair. (Full disclosure - I wanted to post this comment & query without any stars until I had actually attended a music event at August Hall, but had to click on stars in order to post. My stars are based on how beautiful the rendered pictures are of the space and the hard work that has gone into transforming and preserving an historic building. I love the pictures and look forward to enjoying shows at August Hall in the near future. Will write or update a review in a few months.)

late May update: Have since been to August Hall and the experience exceeded expectations. Beautiful space. Excellent sound. Great group. (Bomba Estereo --- so, so good). Eclectic and fun crowd. Amazing reboot of a classic San Francisco venue. Bravo to everyone involved.

I ve been to most of the small concert venues in the city, and this one is a great addition to the field. August Hall is newly opened, but has that classic gritty SF feel. The building is restored beautifully, with fresh updates on bathrooms and the bar. Location is also super accessible. BART is close, there s a parking garage nearby, and it s right by Union Square, so your pregame and after party are a cinch. Looking forward to more of my favorite acts playing here!

Amazing venue. Beautifully restored. The sound is great and the staff here is super friendly. Love to come back for shows. It would be cool if the shows are all ages so younger folks can enjoy the good music they put on here.

Can't wait for this place to open, been waiting an eternity since Ruby Skye shut down. If this is anything like what it was it will surely become my favorite place to go and have a great time, just like before...

Beautiful venue, large sized but still feels intimate, well staffed, good sound, big stage and lighting, nice bars, and they book a lot of great shows. Definitely worth checking out a concert there whether you're a local or if you are a tourist staying by Union Square.
