I worked at two different camps over the summer and loved the experience.
The company is brilliant at what they do and I wouldn't hesitate for a second at bringing or sending any child to Project International.
I already had teaching experience but was still given guidance and support. Both of my course directors were brilliant. Very committed and knew how to get the best out of their staff.
Yes the hours are long but it's called having a job. Working with children is tiring and yes you do have to spend time on an evening marking books but speak to any qualified teacher... they do exactly the same and yes they are paid more but they do it all year round and also have a PGCE.
At Project International, the students get to spend time, be taught and have great fun with Native English speakers. Surely, that's the point of them coming to England.
Every Excursion I went on was brilliant. Yes I didn't know some of the Locations but I'm a grown adult and can definitely work my way around with the children. Plus if your excited about going to a new location, the children definitely will be. It's all about who you are as a person.
Again, I think the Company is outstanding at what they do, if your a potential employee .... yes it is very hard work but if you want experience and enjoy working with children, it's perfect for job! And let's remember, you aren't going to find a job anywhere that's fun but doesn't require effort and hard work.
If you're looking to send a child here. Don't hesitate. I plan on working here again next summer because the company is great and I hope to see your children there.
A rewarding experience for anyone who wants their children to get a real feel for The U.K. The level of English for a child of any age multiplies and the company focuses on integrating nationalities so they must use English on a daily basis. I highly recommend Project International for anyone who wants to see their child mature and improve their English.
I do not recommend anyone work or send their children here:
This is an opportunity for anyone who would like to get experience in teaching with no prior experience. Also expect to be given a great deal of responsibility such as running an excursion to a different city, living in with the children, and conducting airport pickups and drop offs. It was also rewarding to work with children/teenagers which was enjoyable.
Allowed to test your creativity and resourcefulness creating and conducting lessons from scratch with a bare minimum of training.
Cons:
Dear the 'senior' and some staff members. I am utterly disgusted with your conduct and mistreatment of us, you should be ashamed for your racism towards certain ethnic groups and the deeply unacceptable way you conducted yourselves professionally. You were incredibly lucky to have some fantastic people on your team who worked untiringly, who you treated like dirt, myself included. Understaffed with an unwelcoming atmosphere from staff who already knew each other day one with no formal greeting for staff that have travelled a long way. Expectation to know things that senior staff who had been working there for 4/5 years already knew. Gave it a making up rules as you go along type of atmosphere and continually being shouted at (in front of the children) when we did not do these things that were not common sense activities. Different rules for different people, where the staff member who worshipped the senior staff were rewarded with being allowed to drink with them on the job in their (secret) drinking/ gossiping club that happened every evening. There was no disciplinary action for these staff when this was discovered, which is highlighted as a direct breach of the employee contract, however because the most senior of staff was doing it with them most nights and also drinking in their bedroom they got away with it. They also left this alcohol out and it unsurprisingly went missing in a boarding house full of 11-17 year olds. Suspicion that they were using the staff budget to fund this drinking club and they were claiming false expenses. There were accidents on the road involving our coaches and sometimes other vehicles in unrelated incidents. However witnessing someone unfortunately pass away in an accident and being expected to still work in the evening, with no follow up on how we were doing in the next few days was particularly disgusting. Paid for my own DBS form and other essentials which were never used or checked. Underpaid from agreed contracted amount and still yet to receive full payment. Bare minimum of teacher training, apart from supply books I have no idea what the educational senior staff member did. Accused of treating the experience like a holiday camp by senior staff where I was working from 7am-1am (and not drinking on the job), an early start was expected for a summer camp however the late time of going to bed is down to fitting in lesson planning time. You do not in fact have a day off once a week as this is spent entirely planning lessons (that you are not paid for and you have to buy your own food on your day off) or you have a half day off teaching earlier, sometimes this full day off was never even scheduled for and you were still expected to work.
You need to completely change your managers or give them more training. Re-evaluate staff pay and target Universities if you are low on staff and get people out on the ground recruiting. You need to understand that we can handle being told we are doing something wrong, however being treated with no value whilst hanging unsupported every day was poor form from your 'senior' staff. I have never been more stressed or low in my entire life and was immediately cured when I left.
