Food was good... We were a large group and the service was extremely slow.
Food was good... We were a large group and the service was extremely slow.
Good beer. Poor service (at least the waitress we had). The soup was old and spoiled and they still charged us for it. But like I said great beer and atmosphere!
Went for a birthday party, we did the tour that gave you a free beer and a tee shirt or a filled growler of beer. Had the best Reuben sandwich I ever had. Service was excellent.
Always an enjoyable experience! The fried fish sandwich was a tad greasy, but really, no complaints!
Cool old brewery great beer , food is expensive for a pub/brewery .
This is the perfect place to go to if you're looking for good beer and really good German food. I wish I could stop by more often. Nice seating areas both indoor and outdoor.
I've been visiting Penn Brewery for many years, and many of Pittsburgh's other microbreweries. In my opinion, if you really love beer as it meant to be enjoyed, you can't beat Penn. True German style brews without wild palate busting over hopped, or over spiced experiments that just don't truly satisfy. The menu has enough diversity to please everyone in large parties. With a wonderful staff to bring it all together. But it all comes down to the beer. If you love real beer, you should be here.
Great dining. Shame there's not more room, but highly recommended. Beer was superb too. Drunk many american Weissen beers - this was the first, what I would call authentic, German Weissens I've had here. Had the poutine appetizer as a main - more than enough for me ! - and compared notes with a Canadian friend who was also impressed.
Recommended.
Great brewery. The atmosphere, service and food was great! Tons of section on beer and authentic German food.
The courtyard is a wonderful space and the bartenders are great.
The beer is good. When I got my bier Chile is was half full and there was no cheese on it. The Chile wad good but the first time I had it was much better and a lot more of it they would not accommodate for more chill food was burnt and poorly made I guess they had a off night but I very unhappy with everything will not be returning shame shame on you penn brewery
Beer is always awesome. Food was great. 2 chocolate stouts that were really smooth
Nasty... Waitress was apathetic and I had a hair in my food. Disappointing because we've always loved the place... Now we won't go back.
Beer is okay. Food is surprisingly good. There are vegetation options. Service is good too.
The beer here was great! We got a table outside and had a great time. The atmosphere is awesome definitely worth a visit.
It is one of the most unique places I have visited till now. It is a small bar and pub which usually has live concerts or shows going on there. Very beautifully decorated place with good ambiance and surroundings
Three strikes and they are out...that's right could have written this two other times, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt...No More. Their "advertised" happy hour is just a suggestion, or maybe it's the staff, who obviously really don't care. Looks like the new management was able to infuse money, but nothing else. I was really hoping that Penn was going to come back strong since I loved it when it was under the original owner, but I have gone there for the last time. Glad there are other options in Pittsburgh.
Food and drink was good. But service was really bad for our small party.
Have fantasy football draft in basement room! Like having your own personal bar with great food, great beer, and great service! Can't beat it.
Loved the atmosphere. Friendly wait staff. Great food. Liked their beer sampler best. Prices were a bit stiff for us, but since we are poor folks, anything over $10 if price to us. We will come back. We loved it.
Great ambiance and service! The schnitzel sandwich and fries were outstanding. Perfect crispness to the schnitzel. My wife had the potato pancakes, and I was surprised at the subtle flavors in them. The flight of in-house brews was very enjoyable - the IPA was our favorite and very smooth. Good kids menu options that satisfied our 3 year old.
I called to see if they were showing the Monday nite football game they said yes, then I was asked to leave during the 2 ND half, do to them wanting to close early, disappointed ? You bet. After all I did spend around $200.00 on merchandise. And gave both bartender an extra tip. But they were very nice about the whole thing. So I will be back but not for Monday nite football.
Authentic german food and beer. Pittsburgh local destination
Around 2 PM on a Sunday at Penn Brewery. There were four tables occupied.
I had the buffalo chicken pierogies, which come with blue cheese crumbles according to the menu, but instead it came with a white sauce that tasted faintly like blue cheese. What a disappointment. If I d known they were going to pour a weak blue cheese dressing on the pierogies, I would ve said put it on the side, or not ordered it...it was like Pierogies in a soup made of Frank s hot sauce and ranch dressing. I would not order this dish again.
He ordered a bacon cheddar cheeseburger. The bacon was not on the burger. It was cooked right and the fries were crunchy. Good pickle.
The service was pretty good, but we had to ask a couple of times for water, which is all that we drink.
We visited here many times, it must ve been an off day. But for the prices and lack of business on this day, I think things should ve gone a little better.
We will be back, but next time, I will complain if there s a problem.
Good gathering spot. Unfortunately they ran out of schnitzel, did choose the onion, Apple soup and it was delicious. Waited awhile for food to come. Will dine there again.
Great place had some appetizers and a few beers. The outside seating made for some wonderful atmosphere.
The first Microbrewery in PA continues to r
produce great German beer and a diverse menu. Prost!
Good beer, good food, nice portions and fast service. We had a group party here and really enjoyed ourselves. They staff was very attentive and took great care of us.
Good time Good Beer. Sad they bury recognition of what founder Tom Pastorius built.
Great place, great German food. Little loud at times trying to have conversation with the family. Beer is awesome!!!
Consistently great food and awesome beer. Friendly service that makes your visit great.
Awesome place, sit outside when you go its really cool. Beer was very good and the atmosphere was amazing. The beer and the cheese that come with the cheese plate paired pretty good.
Went on a Wednesday. There was a good atmosphere, friendly staff, and I have nothing to complain about.
Rehearsal dinner, service great, food wonderful all good. We are from Michigan have similar venues this was a good choice.
Better than Pittsburgh's Hofbrauhaus as far as food goes. The beer is about the same but Penn has some more unique items. Everything was delicious and huge portions. The heffeweizen was one of the best I've ever had.
When you compare it to other breweries in the area, I have to say that it is significantly better than most others. We've been to a few that were rated 5 stars but were much worse than here. The ambiance was good, not too loud and a nice atmosphere. The beer was good, a nice selection of high quality beers (the have a whole slew of medals to prove it). The food was good if you're into German food. I could see that if you're not into that cuisine, you might not like the food. Overall, this was a very good meal at a nice brewery restaurant.
great food, solid beers, variety not just bs latest trendy beers, soild daily drinkers too, cool atmosphere
Stopped by here for dinner on the way into the city and I was very excited to try this place out. Great layout and atmosphere, definitely had high expectations. However the whole experience was underwhelming. We walked in and wasn t seated for five minutes, there was no distinct greeter or hostess. The servers didn t acknowledge us for another 5-10ish minutes. Mind you, it wasn t that busy. Maybe a dozen guests in the dining room.
Two tables were seated after us and were both subsequently served and left before us. The pretzel appetizer was fantastic, as were the beers! However the main courses were not great, especially the burger. All in all it could have been a fluke night but it seemed disorganized and left us to desire better service.
The wife and I had a GREAT time with Gene & Jim (thanks to Chef Shandor)... we'll happily return!! #Pittsburghwillalwaysbehome
Incredible beer, beautiful beer garden, awesome German/Pittsburgh menu.
The sauerbraten was awesome and chocolate meltdown was delicious
Great beer and good food. The meat and cheese plate is a great choice for an appetizer. Service is always kind of spotty. I always seem to get the same surly waitress. It's not a super cozy, intimate place, but is great for a group or a crowd.
Food and beer is great! I love the beer and cheese plate. Definitely go during trivia on Mondays it is so much fun and you can win free beer.
Went to Penn Brewery with 9 other people. That service was very good. We ordered a variety of things and weren't shy about trying each other's food. Everything was wonderful. Even if you don't drink beer, it's a great place to eat.
Great place. Good variety of food and beers. Plenty of parking available. Good service. My favorites are the Penn Pilsner and the Oktoberfest.
Awesome, Awesome, Awesome & my Mom is a great cook, straight off the boat!
Came in for some samples and a light lunch. I was here for the beer but the apple onion soup was superb. Our bartender, Chad, was super informative, attentive, and awesome to talk to. He was very well versed on the menu and made my experience here awesome!! I bought a six pack of their St. Nick Bock and can t wait to gift it to a friend in NY. I will be back before the season ends! Thank you Penn Brewery!
Their beef stroganoff is SO GOOD!! I ve ordered it at the restaurant as well as delivery & it s perfect every time. Also love the pretzel appetizer!
Great Oktoberfest. Go as early as you can to beat the crowds
Dope mac and cheese. Beer was just ok. They try to be super German but don't really have the space for the traditional beer hall tables.
Very good at reasonable pricing. Can be Loidin at times, but a great meeting and gathering place.
Great food and beer, really loud live music during dinner time is not ideal though.
We had an unconventional wedding rehearsal dinner at Penn Brewery in the Ratskeller.
Price - Compared to other options we quoted this was by far the most reasonable price for a rehearsal dinner of about 50 people (space, food, and drinks). This was partially driven by the fact that we did platters and appetizers only as their buffet and plated options were similar to competitors. This was way MORE than enough food and delicious.
Service - Very accommodating for my mobility impaired grandfather. Lindsay, our event manager, was normally very quick to respond to the many emails we sent her (less than 24 hours). The day of the event all of the servers were wonderful and helpful with beer/drink selections for the guests. They allowed us to bring in flowers and set them up for us prior to the event (did not charge a setup fee).
Our only complaint was that the food did not have descriptions for the guest. They did label all of the gluten free food per our request.
The beer was good, and everything else was lousy. The staff was disinterested, inattentive, and unfriendly. No one was willing to help anyone who wasn't "their" table or customer; multiple people had to leave their tables to come up to the bar to get drinks when no one came to help them. I watched one man - who had a beer - with his friend - who was clearly waiting for one, and when an off-the-clock employee came up to the bar and was served before the customer waiting, both of them walked out. I watched another man come up to the bar and ask for a beer, only to be clearly ignored by the person standing there, because they were far too busy ringing up their check. Also, to be clear, it wasn't even busy: the staff were just uninterested in going out of their way to help anyone - the customers or each other. Additionally, the entire place really could have used a good cleaning, and the staff left the bar messy. I like Penn Brewery's beer, but the brewpub was an extreme disappointment. Will not be back.
German inspired food & Brew
Date of Visit: Monday, December 17, 2018
Brew Pub with great food options.
While Passing through Pittsburgh, we were looking for a good place to stop for lunch, and came across the Penn Brewery.
This is a huge brewery with restaurant with Euro-Pittsburgh fare served in a 19th century Brewery and Biergarten.
The unfortunate part of our visit was that they were out of several of their beers.
They have about a dozen beer options on tap.
The Menu was pretty good a lot of interesting food options with a German flare. I had the Deutschtahn Burger, and it was insane a huge freshly prepared burger, with fried egg, coleslaw, and kielbasa. It was massive and hard to eat, but so delicious.
The Cod fish sandwich on a hoagie was also huge, and delightful.
Mushroom Philly Cheese steak spectacular
The portions are massive, and the food looks fantastic amazing presentation.
The food tasted amazing.
The prices were good About $30 for burger and brisket meals with a beer each.
Parking: I did not see a parking lot, but there is some street parking.
There is free wifi no password.
Really good food.
Interesting history with classic brews. And the lager tunnels!
Great food and great beer. First time there and will go again .
Great beer, good food and service. A bit on the noisy side, if you wish to talk with family or friends.
Great local brew pub in walking distance of the Heinz plant.
Great food, great beer, great service. Ultimately surprised with the green beans. Shout out to the side of green beans!
Great staff. Cool shirts and even better beer. Try the Kaiser Pils and Penn IPA.
I enjoy coming here. great food, drinks and service
Small place. Nice bartenders. Good beer. Dog friendly.
Always a good time. Kid friendly, at least for relatively earlier dinners. Good food. Great beer. Best to score a seat on their outdoor Biergarten if possible. Good spot for pre Pirates food and drinks.
Decent food and drink. Nice atmosphere. Check your bill carefully. The last two times there were significant errors.
5 stars isn't enough to describe the awesome experience we had here! We went here for dinner and drinks on the 4th of July, and had the best experience. The drink selection is great; we got 2 flights of beer, (one came with an amazing cheese tray, which I'd highly recommend). We tried both ciders on the menu as well, which were both great. Also, ordered their goulash, which was incredible, and our entrees were also completely amazing. Their ribs were cooked to perfection, and the beef strogonoff is fantastic. I would definitely highly recommend this brewery.
Love this place. I'm not a beer drinker but the food is very good. The Brisket Chili is the best chili in the city, hands down. I also got the Yinzer salad. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the ranch was on point. The vegetables were very fresh. What else could you want in a salad? I will definitely eat here again!
Penn Brewery always has a good selection tasty of beers with rotating seasonal beers, as well as a great menu of German food. In the summer time we enjoy sitting outdoors in their unique courtyard.
Out of towners. Loved the Pierogi's and Potato Pancakes !!! The food and service were great. So much to order on the menu. We'll definitely be back to try more items on the menu.
Huge improvement on food. Great place and reasonably priced.
Great beers made there (took some home) as well as custom made meats. Great service. Our friendly waitress made my putine exactly as I asked. So good. Always our first stop coming into town.
