Very relaxing walk, full of locals and tourists. Gorgeous views. Before reaching the bridge we'r walked through a park and encountered coyotes, it was a little bit unnerving ...but they have signs everywhere telling you what to expect and what to do so it was ok.

Did one of the guided bay tours on a fishing boat named The Lovely Martha from Fisherman's Wharf where they take you out under the GGB then back into the Bay proper and over around Alcatraz. Lovely trip being able to sit back and enjoy the views while hearing a bit about the places along the S. F. coastline.

This recreation area is really a combination of several parks covering a vast area along the Pacific Coast west and north of San Francisco- particularly around the Golden Gate strait. We spent a day exploring the northern section, hiking at Muir Woods in the morning followed by a tour of the Nike Missile Site on Marin Headlands and a peek at the Golden Gate Bridge. There is so much to do in this recreation area that one could easily spend a week hiking the numerous trails, enjoying the many beaches, touring Alcatraz, exploring historic military and maritime sites, and visiting the Discovery Museum and Marine Mammal Center. We went on a Saturday because that was the only day the Nike Missile Tour was operating. Unfortunately the Marin Headlands area is very popular and there was a lot of traffic congestion - particularly on Conzelman Road near Battery Spencer where there are viewpoints for Golden Gate Bridge. Cars were backed up because all of the available parking was full, and security guards were waving drivers through. We had to be satisfied with the views of the bridge that we could see from the car. It would probably be better on a weekday, maybe take a tour bus, Uber or bicycle into that area so that parking would not be a concern.

This huge expanse of property in San Francisco runs along the waterfront and stretches from the Pacific Ocean, around to the SF end of the Golden Gate Bridge and along the Bay from Ft. Point and Crissy Field to Ft. Mason. It also includes the Marin Headlands and Angel Island to the north, so this collection of federal lands and forts at the "Gate" is a treasure of prime view property. All of us are so lucky that it is so well preserved and protected by the Park staff. With over 35M visitors a year, it is probably the most traffic'd Park in the US - and the Park crew does a great job! I live just a few blocks up on Pacific Heights so I can walk down Laguna to Crissy Field to either get some exercise or cool off on a rare, hot San Francisco day or attend one of the many activities in the Park almost every weekend. There are so many history layers and stories in this area, that i recommend you find a walking-tour to get more information from the SF Historical Society or the Park rangers themselves.

GGNRA is not maintaining Phelger Estate at all. On this trip there were trees down in 3 places, the Miramonte trail has been officially closed for probably 2 years now due to a small section that got washed out in winter storms. Also I ran into a bike ride who is not to allowed on the trails and a couple with a dog, also not allowed.

GGNRA should give the Phelger Estate area to San Mateo County Parks if they can't maintain and police the area!

I would have spent more time here if I was able. Most people will come here for a quick stopover on one of the viewpoints facing the Golden Gate bridge, but there's much more here if you're willing to put in the time.

Many of the viewpoints are historically significant, as they were the site of old weapon emplacements guarding the harbor. The whole area is beautiful and offers wonderful views of the surrounding area, not only the bridge. Finally, there's lots in terms of hiking if you're the active sort.

If you're planning a trip to San Francisco, I would make a point of really exploring this area.

Outstanding place for a hike, pictures of the Golden Gate, the Bay, visiting the Warming Hut and Fort Baker. I visited in February, dress in layers, wear a hat and enjoy your view of Alcatraz Island as well. There is a small beach that is child and dog friendly.

The Dipsea Trail is our favorite hike in the Bay area. There's a lot to look at, from a near rainforest entry to mountain hills, cliff sides over the ocean, and so much plant life all the way. Even foggy days are worth the hike. Highly recommend!

My experience was beautiful. Being from Southern California I have always seen the bridge on television, movies, or on post cards. I started my trek at the marina and walked all along the beach as the bridge got closer and closer it just got bigger and bigger until i arrived to Fort Point which is situated right under the bridge and then I was standing right under this ginormous structure of Steele beams and cabeling. It was a great experience one more check off of the bucket list.

Such beautiful sights to be seen here! Coastal Southern California is one of those places that you just have to visit at least once in your lifetime. It's so heartbreaking to know this year has broken world records for devastation caused by wildfires in Northern California. So I would recommend seeing what's left of this beautiful states history while you can! Prayers to all affected by the wildfires.

Tennessee Valley is a family favorite. A nice easy 3.6 mile round trip walk with a picturesque beach that is great for little ones (playing in the sand, not swimming, it is still SF). Only bummer is no dogs. Get here early on weekends to get parking.

Beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge and skyline of San Francisco. Plenty of parking available. The visitors center is quite interesting and worth a stop; has the Junior Ranger badge program available for kids.

Camping here was excellent! Loved it. You can get water from the visitor's center. While camping at Hawk campground, I just did the hike to Spencer bus pad in the morning and took a shower at the YMCA in Presidio, then went about my day from there remembering to bring back water each time.

There is endless trails through Muir woods, Mount Tam, etc at a variety of skill sets. Of note the roads are very twisty with lots of cyclists on the weekend. Also parking at Muir Woods is crazy and as of Jan16/18 you will require a parking reservation.

Must visit place when you are in Bay area. I recommend esp Hawk Hill and Point Bonita. In Hawk Hill, you will get a great view of Golden Gate bridge and San Francisco (when there is no fog , that is). Point Bonita is one of the light house in West coast. There are some good information in there . Overall, this is a good place to do some outdoor activities and close to San Francisco!!
