Ok, Wausau Mine gets 4 stars from me for basically 1 reason, the cheese fries. They are rediculously good and I love the sauce. I have had a few other things off their menu, and they were fine, but the cheese fries win hands down. Prices are fair and we have had usually only average service when we have gone. If you like extra cheesy fries with great sauce for a fair price, I recommend.

I'm a wausau native, so I remember the old wausau mine look. The new look they have now that was not around some years back is amazing and so worth the look. Check it out when your going up north and passing through central Wisconsin

Super cool and unique restaurant with great food! The waitress we had was very nice and on top of things even though the place was packed. My family came here on mother's day and they were giving all the moms a rose, too. Overall a great restaurant!

Food has always been awesome but the service sucked this time I was here. The waitress made us feel like our party of nine with split checks was a huge inconvenience to her and I don't think guests at a restaurant should ever feel like they are an inconvenience to their waiter/waitress. The waitress was moody and it took several requests at times to get the things we needed (e.g. we asked for a pitcher of water for our table and my husband ended up having to go and get several pitchers of water from the bar as our waitress never brought one until we asked her again). We also waited over thirty minutes for our food. However, sucky service aside, I've never had a bad meal here. I had the twisted turkey with sweet potato fries which has easily become my favorite dish here. My husband had the hot beef sandwich and he says he loved it. Only complaint about the food is that the fries were lukewarm and I can only atrribute that to our inattentive waitress. If you don't mind crappy service, the food here is awesome.
One of the Wausau institutions. This is where the locals go, over and over again. The pizza fries are Legendary. Even if you're just passing through from here to there it's an easy exit and entrance back onto the highways. It isn't fine dining, but it is an Experience to be enjoyed. Highly recommended.
It was good food. Coworkers that I was traveling with enjoyed the salmon or cod, and I had the pulled pork. The atmosphere was interesting because it felt like you were in a cave of sorts. I tried there Vanilla coffee cocktail, and I was left with wanting more. It would have been nice if I was told it was a hot beverage, and if you advertise it as vanilla, I personally don't want orange to be one of the prominent tastes.
Okay, the ambiance is o.k. As in friendly staff and kitschy mine-like interior (and exterior.) But do not order food here. The cod I ordered looked like it came out of a Chevy Chase movie. Ridiculously disgusting. It tasted just as bad. My partner's Rueben was basically a sauerkraut sandwich with French dressing on the side. I won't go back.

My husband and I have always said that the best part of living on this side of town is having the Wausau Mine so close. The food and atmosphere are always consistently great.
My husband has talked about a place up north that makes a Reuben Pizza that sounded so good. This weekend we realized that we could not find anyone in Wausau with a Reuben Pizza on their menu. We called Wausau Mine and they made one to order! You can't knock it until you try it, they did an excellent job and we very much enjoyed it.

VERY dissapointed on 3 seperate trips.
The worst was the last time we were there and it will be our last. The item in question this time was spaghetti and meatballs. The meatballs were extreamly nasty. We are not sure but we think that they grind up the chewy parts of prime rib or left over steak to make them. My friends meatballs had hard chewy cords in them that you couldnot even cut with a knife. Plus they tasted very off. We asked the weightress about them and she had no idea how they were made or how they tasted.
My food was not much better but since the meatball incident was so nasty, I dont need to write more. All i will say is that their cream sauce was served seperated, pizza crust was burnt and salad was warm and wilted. So in 3 visits I thought they would get something right.
We wont go back to find out....

Cool place to eat. The outside and inside of the building is one of a kind, makes you feel like you're dining in a mining cave. The Italian fries with cheese are the best I've ever had anywhere however the sandwiches and pasta are average. Overall it's a must see restaurant and prices are fair.

We stopped in as we passed through Wausau and enjoyed a birthday lunch for my wife. She was given a birthday mug and allowed to drink for free during our visit. We had the Italian fries which were very good. We also had a pizza which was VERY VERY cheesy!! We enjoyed the fun atmosphere and unique decor. They had really cool stone sinks in the restrooms, the upstairs a really had a party type room and extra seating, they also had an arcade room with a racing game, a hunting game, a crane and a traditional arcade game.
We will stop back in the future due to the cool, off kilter atmosphere, the good prices, and the great eats! We will probably try a sandwich or burger at our next visit as they looked great and the fries our kids got with their kids meals were delicious.

Wonderful employees and food. Great theme that everyone can enjoy. A bit too crowded but what can I say, I buss tables for Luigi's dinner in Sheboygan Wisconsin, I know what a Saturday night looks like. A enjoyable free refils on drinks except alcoholic beverages. Over all wonderful a experience!
Always loved Wausau Mine but tonight was told 15 minute wait and waited Hour and a half and still didn't get a table so we left. Not happy!

Food was cold inside. The replacement was warmer inside, but still cool. A very interesting looking restaurant though.
Approaching the exterior, my expectations were raised. The building design is unique and indicative of a mine shaft. Once inside however, my expectations were lowered as it was reminiscent of a cheap theme park. The web site pictures prepared me for a rustic yet tactful experience. From the fake rock walls to the multitude of uncleared tables and booths, we were seated and treated to a menu. The menu however, was varied and should provide every member of a family with a satisfying choice. I chose a burrito plate as did a friend. We were neither thrilled nor upset. It was just okay. The wait was not long, which was good, as we were hungry travelers passing through. One plate served was a burger which I was told was pretty good but how can one go wrong with a burger? Apparently the pizza must be a good choice as it was noted customers arrived and left with a box to enjoy in their more comfortable home surroundings. It was also football game day. Overall, you can t go wrong here if you are hungry but do not know what you want to eat. The service was good, the food was fair, the atmosphere was disappointing but bearable.
Really neat place to eat and the food is very good. The staff and mangers are happy to visit with customers and they take being healthy and safe seriously.
Stopped for lunch, we had Burgers and a small pizza fry.......very satisfying. Will be back again.

Excellent service, quality food, great atmosphere, great pricing. I had the best Philly cheesesteak I ve ever had, the fries are perfectly crispy and taste so good you don t need any condiments, salt, or added flavors. HIGHLY recommend this place to everyone.
food was good! but we had horrible service, our waitress came to give us 1 drink and our food and never came back, we couldn't get any help and it turned a 45 min meal into an hour and a half plus
Very unique restaurant! Food was decent. Only down fall is when you are eating upstairs the server will rush you and pretty much tell you .. you have 15 mins to eat and after that you can sit at the bar ... I m guessing they had another group coming In? I thought it was kind of rude but whatever.

This is a one of a kind restaurant with tons of personality, history and flare. If you are within 100 miles of central Wisconsin you have to make the trip to Wausau Mine Company! The atmosphere is unique and the food is great. I have never had a bad meal here and I come here a lot. There is an underground mine shaft feel that is true through the whole building. Great for kids and adults with a small arcade and great old fashions. They even have an in house water spring pond for making wishes!
Had a vary Special day a planned for me and my wife and our anniversary. called the day before to see if we could get a corner booth with a couple of small candles lit. the guy on the phone said sure no problem just call an hour before. Called about an hour before and the girl on the phone said we do not have a corner booth for just 2 people and we do not have candles. She said the guy I talked to is new and don't know what hes talking about.... It looks like most of the people that work there are between the ages of 13-19. Good food though

I do love the old mining tunnel look inside and out. Only gripe I have is , with the door opening so much, it was a little cool in there.

I called a few days ahead to reserve an area for our soccer team and family. The room upstairs was booked and the staff organized an area in the back dining hall. They did a great job responding to our needs and accommodating our large group. Hands down a good experience and their help made our team feel welcome. If we are ever in Wausau again for a soccer tournament, I definitely will call again for reservations. Thank you.

Really, REALLY disappointed today. Stoped in 330ish (afternoon), not only took 10 minutes for them to take my order after acknowledging me at the bar but kept serving others after me. Finally put my order in for just a bowl of their amazing french onion soup to go. Took almost 45 minutes to get JUST A SOUP. Over the last five years I come in on a regular basis and I have NEVER waited more than 5-10 minutes, even when the place was swamped.
Food is ok. Really the only reason to go here is if you have kids or are a tourist.
Awesome atmosphere. Went for pizza here as I have heard it's pretty good. And I was impressed as well. Definitely a place to bring children or a work luncheon.
