had lots of fun here a very exciting place every time I've been ( Yes I've been here a few times cant stay away). massive place with well looked after animals and great place for kids of every age, spent 4 hours here and had the children falling asleep on the trip home but never felt tired racing around to see as much as possible. don't come here to late in the afternoon as theres too much to see in just a few hours and i still haven't seen everything they have. some highlights are the penguins, lions, tigers and elephants

Lots of things to do and see, plenty of parking, great amenities throughout: food, toilets, etc., plenty of photo opportunities & up-close viewing with the animals. Excellent day out with the kids!!

Haven't been able to go here for over 12 years. Its clear the money has been invested in the newer exhibits, which are all excellent. Particularly liked the tree top monkey walk. We actually managed to see the baby gorilla from a different vantage point without waiting in the massive queue near the glass windows. Likewise the investment in the elephant enclosure and its environs is really paying off, with the bamboo shoots creating a very good atmosphere.

Unfortunately some of the other exhibits are looking tired, particularly the baboons, the Australia area and some of the other "infill" areas. I guess its impossible to keep the whole of the zoo up to the standards set by the latest exhibits, but its good to investment is on-going.

Food options are quite limited beyond the standard chips / burger / pies / bottle of soft drink. We tried the fried rice and noodles in the Elephant area both of which were tasty, with generous portion sizes but lacked any genuine filling.

All in all a good day out. Helpful to have the train station access which makes getting back into the city fairly quick and pain free.

My husband and I are both blind we were on our honeymoon and wanted to go to zoo we contacted the zoo and they arranged for a volunteer to guide us through the zoo on a buggy
They put themselves out to explain describe and ensure that we were catered for on arrival we were shown different animal skins to feel when we were finished our volunteer escorted us to the tram stop
Thank you to the zoo for a great experience and welcoming hospitality will definently be returning

The entrance fee is considerable and compared to the simple things
When I think of Seoul Grand Park, it's really expensive
On the other hand, the annual membership is about $ 117 as if it was a spot for frequent locals

Best Zoo i have ever been too! Its really set out well to be able to enjoy everything they have on display!! The way that the enclosures are set up you can always see all of the animals (although sometimes the tigers hide) which my kids love! The open area with the lemurs is amazing!!! Being able to walk around with them running by your feet is the best and the kids think its great! My daughter adores the butterfly house and we often spend more than 20 minutes in there just looking at all the different colours of the butterflies! Good value, food is a bit pricey, but what zoo isn't! We much prefer to pack a lunch and have a picnic on all the wonderful spots available to sit and enjoy the surroundings!

Not to criticise those that work there. Seeing animals in captivity was depressing and should have not have gone. The water looked dead with stagnation, the big animal areas desolate. The orangutan enclosure has steel and rope drapery.

Whet to the Melbourne zoo today for the first time I'm many years. Very very disappointed. Many empty enclosures and many animals not visable. Walked through the Lion enclosure and all we saw was one sleeping Snow Leopard . No lions at all. No bears anymore. Loved the bears. Wont be hurrying back there. Expensive entry fee.

Was a little bit disappointed that the tigers and snow leopards were feeling a bit shy but that's ok there was staff there showing everyone the keeper cams so you could see what they were up to...

My only complaint is parking, there are signs everywhere saying theres available parking where there isn't so it takes quite a while to find a park but thats about it

Our favourite zoo. This zoo takes a lot of commendable efforts in endangered species restoration. The staff are polite, zoo keepers friendly, has clean surroundings and good variety of food options.

Waste of $84. Hardly any animals and they list them as plural like "lions", "lemurs" when there's either none or just 1. Honestly so disappointed, it was super packed and there was hardly anywhere to sit. The tigers were super skinny, couldn't even spot the snow leopard from how depressed it was.

Typically the money churning machine that so many places have become. Same or similar layout as when I was a child. Family of 4 a minimum three hundred dollars for the day. Don't forget your hat, it will cost you 30 dollars. Toilets are disgusting. Now they have caught on to the money spinning twighlight music.. Money money money. I'm glad I come once every 20 years. Go to Heals ville sanctuary instead. The Zoo sucks.. I'm on.

Gift shop at the entrance is quite over-priced. Kind of expected. Lots of things to see in a compact area, great for my parents who cannot walk too much. Some parts are still under renovation unfortunately. Quite a bit of thoughtful design for kids as well. Overall it is a good place to visit.

Such an awesome place. So many animals although some were sleeping at the time we passed their enclosure but overall it was awesome.
The most fascinating/amazing area was of the lemurs where you could enter their enclosure and get real close to them and they were just so relaxed that they didn't care you were nearby.
We spent about 6 hours there and it was so worth it. 10 out of 10

We got annual membership of the zoo. While we cannot compare it with San Diego zoo, it is a great zoo and can be used as a nice picnic spot.
Very close to Melbourne CBD, it is accessible through tram which stops right there. Parking can be an issue on weekends if you arrive late.

Fantastic! They got decent varieties of animals, and the lay out of the zoo is very good as well. Everything is on one big loop, so very easy to navigate your way around. By far our favourite zoo compared to other big zoo's like healesville sanctuary and werribee open range

This place is pretty lame as zoos go. I live in a town of 150k people in Germany and the zoo there is better. Was expecting an extensive native Australian species exhibit but it was severely lacking - 2 koalas, 3 kangaroos, platypus exhibit closed, no echidna, pictures of cassowaries everywhere but no actual cassowaries, no big snakes, very few reef fish. The gift shop is a bigger rip off than Melbourne airport. Generic kids T-shirts are over $30. Same t-shirts are $5 at Victoria market and $25 at the airport. This place was an utter disappointment.

Very disappointing paying $37 and to see next to nothing at the Zoo.
No big cats, one pacing tiger, meerkats, and limas. And a few monkies.
Expensive visit to Melbourne Zoo for very little in return.

I visited Melbourne zoo and was extreamly disappointed in most of it, there was hardly any animals to see, the ones we did see looked so sad. In the old days you could see the animals close up but now they seem so far away it's tough to even spot them. The whole place needs an overhaul.
I reciently visited the Canberra zoo and it was amazing, you could see the animals so close, the animals were happy, enclosures were great, all animals except one were on show, I was amazed at the place, it was well looked after, beautiful, no stone left unturned.

Great place to see animals. Eventhough I would prefer Werribee zoo because it is open range, but the variety of animals in here are better. Overall experience is fun.

There are elephants in here whereas Werribee not available.

There are 2 entries to this zoo.
Public transport 2 ways: Tram from melbourne cbd but quite far walk or royal park train but the entrance is from behind.

Lots of animals, clean cages, interactive activities, and all the amenities. This place has great staff and animal caretakers (by the looks of it, I don't know any of them personally), but as far as zoos go, this one seems to be in the upper class.

[Melbourne Zoo Fare] (2016) Adults AUD 31.6/person...

[Melbourne Zoo Fare] (2016) Adults AUD 31.6/person; children 4-15 years old AU$ 15.8/person; children under 4 years old are free; family package (2 adults + 2 children) AUD 79.9. We lined up to buy tickets at the gate of the zoo. Few people queued up at 11:30 local time on Thursday. We can pay by credit card and get a map of the zoo. Both Chinese and English versions are available. P.S. It is best to bring VISA and Master Card when traveling to Australia, because there were not many UnionPay there.
Departure From Flinders Street Station, take the Upfield Line/line train to Royal Park Station. It takes 6 stops and 15 minutes. Get off and walk with the crowd for about 390 meters. Most people who get off at this station go to the zoo.
We were a train at Flinders Street Station at 11:00 local time, and entered the zoo at 11:30, which was very smooth. The design of each exhibition hall of the Melbourne Zoo is very careful. For example, the ring-tailed lemur and dwarf kangaroo exhibition areas are open. There are two doors in and out of the exhibition area. Then there are no railings between people and animals in the exhibition area. Follow the tour route That is to say, although the animals will not take the initiative to approach people, this kind of "zero distance" harmony feels very good. The large glass curtain wall of the lion display area looks very handsome. It may be due to noon. They were sleeping when we arrived. If you catch a lion and walk back and forth happily, you should be very powerful when you are near the tourists. Watching them swim in the water while looking at the glass. It's a very good experience, but the photo effects are average. There are many restaurants in the Melbourne Zoo, all of which are fast food, basically eating outdoors, and there are basically many seagulls to accompany them... they fight for food... but there are warning signs in the dining area "no feeding", one is For the safety of tourists, avoid being accidentally injured by wild animals or being attacked by their feces; the second is to allow wild animals to forage for themselves and not let them depend on humans. This day is Thursday, the zoo is relatively clean, the sun is very big, the sky is very blue, we rested on the bench for a long time, unwilling to leave ~ we did not leave the zoo back to the city until 16:30 in the afternoon. Play time 5 hours. PS. Koalas in this zoo were sleeping at the time, and there were too many tourists around, so I didn t squeeze in to take pictures. I couldn t find a place where I could take a photo with Koala, but I saw a place where I could take a photo with a dwarf kangaroo, but since we re going to a wildlife park on Tajima Island in a few days, we can feed kangaroos up close. Spend money here to take pictures.

The map and the layout is confusing. Hard to find anything. Not enough animals. Heard similar comments from other people, while walking around the maze. Seems to be more focused on gardens and eateries than animals.

This is one of the best zoos in the world. From the amazing reptile house that I can spend hours walking through, to the world class butterfly house which is just so beautiful it has to be experienced to really understand.
The lions have an elevated viewing walkway which again provides a first class look into the lives of the lions.
I could go in & on, but you get the idea. I loved the Melbourne Zoo as a child & I still really like to go & understand how truly lucky we are to have such a one of a kind place here in our city. Highly recommended.

A great day out with the family!
Melbourne zoo upgrades are fantastic, giving the animals larger enclosures with a more natural feel! It s great to be able to walk around at your own pace and such an affordable price. I love going a couple of times a year, if you do too... I d recommend the annual pass.

A day out for the family at the Melbourne Zoo

A day out for the family at the Melbourne Zoo

The best thing is you can get to the zoo very easily on public transport by a train, tram or bus. If you are close enough you can walk or ride your bike and there is parking very close by 5 hours for $2

There is plenty to see along the way and some great education if you want to know a little more. The zoo staff are very knowledgable and friendly.

There is plenty of places to stop and have a rest or even if you want to have a picnic with the family. Along the way there are many toilets, bins and also some shops to but food and drink along with a couple of merchandise shops

Looking forward to heading back with our little man as we now have memberships for the year. Great value as 3 visits to any of the many zoos and we will be ahead of our investment.
