Fantastic place big enough to walk slowly about 3to4 hours so many different animal from all over the world their living environment were built so beautiful and attached to the nature way where they came from and the animals are health and active . The opening way to communicate with animals helps us to know these amazing creatures from different angles . I came here at2.30pm which is too late too see all the species , I would like to come again early and enjoy here unhurriedly

Great place for kids. Always a pleasure to visit and see the animals. The zoo is maintained very well. Long weekends are usual very busy and it is better to arrive early to avoid long queues. The cafes offer limited variety of food and prices are moderate to high. Watch out for events and keeper's talks - these are generally very good.

The Zoo is great, lovely grounds with native plants. We especially love the reptiles and birds but why does a tea bag, a dash of milk and hot water cost the same as a coffee ($4.20 or for a bit more hot water, $4.70!)?

This place is a marvellous choice. Plenty of parking and also accessible by Melbourne's tram network. There are plenty of animals to see and they are all cared after wonderfully. All animals look healthy and have plenty of stimulating items to interest them. Enclosures are kept clean and zoo staff are usually around to explain how their animals are kept. Recently Melbourne zoo has also declined to sell any products that contain palm oil which is a brilliant step to conserve the rainforests of Borneo.

Very dissapointed with the Melbourne Zoo felt we paid money to see nothing! 5hrs and they where either sleeping or put away for something. Our girls where so dissapointed along with us. Also make sure to look for the parking signs as us or other family members didn't see them. $102 to look at empty inclosures than a $81 parking fine on top. Werribee Zoo anyday!! Wont be returning.

Really nice landscapes and habitats, but saw almost no animals. We understand that they need to do best by the animals, but they should advertise if enclosures are closed or empty. Says it's open until 5pm, exhibits start closing at 4pm, so go early. If you've been to Singapore Zoo, Taronga Park Zoo or even Perth Zoo, don't bother with this one. It's about 20 years behind the times. All round a disappointing experience for a city like Melbourne.

The zoo was great and although it was a hot day we had a fantastic time. A little disappointed that the reptile house wasn't open but on the plus side the kids got to see Santa and get a photo so really happy with that

Husband and I had a lovely day out together at the Melbourne zoo. The animals didn t really want to show their faces but that s ok.

Reasonable entry price.

The butterfly house was amazing. So calming and warm. The butterflies were beautiful.

I feel like Melbourne zoo can do with more interaction between human and animal. I have been to over 10 zoos around the world and Melbourne does not even comparable with some of the best. This is why I rated 3 stars.

Out of date zoo!

Out of date zoo!

Visited recently wasn't impressed.. Enclosures were in need of an overhaul.
Tiger enclosure was particularly depressing litter in the water and solitary tiger who didn't look in great condition.
There's more focus on areas that do not have animals... Cafes, piazzas etc...
I would add if it is as described 'modelled on London zoo' then it's a good replica as this is also a drab affair!
$72 for 2 x adults not great value you can go through the whole place in an hour.
The walk through Royal Parks much more fun!

Very misleading brochure with the big kids free across it. Lions couldn't be seen because of a conservation meeting which could have been done anywhere else so the people who have to pay a small fortune to go to the zoo can see the animals. Some of the zoo was great and some very disappointing. Additionally all the facilities and shops started closing before there 430 closing time.

I have been to the zoo four times over 30 years when visiting Melbourne. I must say this last time was by far the best. The displays in the animals enclosures were thoughtful and details to the landscaping and presentation made you feel like you were in the natural environment of the animal, I felt this in particular in the Elephant section. The modernisation of the exhibits in the ten years since I went last were such an improvement. The elephant area is so much better than I remember. The concept on changes everyone can make to help animals in the wild was clever. It was easy to get to by train and we had great weather so we saw lots of animals, if not all (lions cage was under repair so they were not out), but there was no disappointment from our smallest critic! We have recently been to Mogo, Canberra and Taronga zoos and I would rate Melbourne the best of them all. The choice of site for the zoo a century+ ago also helps with the stroll around, making it easier as it is not as steep. We also liked that the toilets were easily accessible around the zoo in many locations. There has been a lot of thought with the recent changes to Melbourne zoo and how the animals are cared for and presented to visitors. It was an A+++++ visit today!

A great place to take the kids on school holidays or at any time really. This is a big zoo so plan to spend a few hours wandering around. One of my favourite places is the reptile house which is quite big and has a large variety of snakes and lizards and everything in between. The raised walkway through the lions den is another good place to visit.

The zoo is easily accessible offering plenty of parking and located across several public transport stations.

The park is well looked after with plenty of plants and vegetation to see along side the animals making your walk around the zoo that much more interesting.

If you get peckish they offer food and beverages within the park along your tour. Been a few times and have yet to be let down to see certain animals they make sure you get the best out of your day.

A brilliant zoo. Well worth the visit. We were staying in the CBD so took a tram to it. Tram stop is only a couple of minutes walk from the zoo. There is plenty to see at the zoo. I recommend you visit the Lemurs. The zoo is well set out and easy to spend a few hours here.

Zoo organized around a central access where are distributed seven different loop routes with a length of about 600m each. Allow about 30 minutes per circuit. Many fast food restaurants and toilets are available.

Zoos in general, including this one are great; this one is not too large or too small. 4 hours is enough time to visit. Two entrances; main gate and rail (train) gate. Very clean, food venues and toilet locations are spread out well throughout the park. There are 4-5 gift shops, walk through each as each shop seems to sell different merchandise. Two surprises which may be considered negatives; the Seal exhibition is very popular with the kids therefore strollers block the walking path leading to the vicinity of the exterior theater and towards the exhibit exit. The gift shop only offers one t-shirt design "Melbourne Zoo" for sale, a "Vet" scrub for a child and a "Zoo Keeper" field shirt for a child, that's it. Most zoos offer different t-shirts, blouses, sweat shirts and polo shirts for sale, not here. Instead - tons of stuffed animals!! I didn't want to give too much of the zoo experience away through my photographs so you can discover it on your own. . . . Enjoy!

Sumatran Tiger:

Sumatran Tiger:

Very nice stripes and colour arrangement, slow service but attentive to the quality of its product. This magnificent cat requires a certain amount of imagination to fully appreciate, as tigers are not boastful and rarely demonstrate their full prowess when hunting minced chicken.

Easy to access by car or public transport. Well maintained with lots of plants and green areas. Great variety of animals to see, including kangaroos. Unfortunately didn t see any koalas when we were there, they were hiding. Great day out with the family and children. Will return in the future. Would recommend

A great day out. Well laid out and plenty of greenery. Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes and take your camera. On our experience, most of the animals were active and visible. We had a great half day wandering at our own pace. Plenty of rest stops. A beautiful and interesting place to visit.

Had a great time with the family at the zoo. Lots to see and do! Plenty of places to rest and grab a bite to eat. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Go to the zoo! BTW whoevers number plate this is... Classic!

Nice little spot nearby the city. Has a reasonable variety of animals and the enclosures are the best I've ever seen. They have a lot of glass, which makes it really easy to get closer to most of the animals and really appreciate them.
They also have a peacock that wonders around the restaurans, giving an extra touch for the kids.

Zoo is great, but the Animals get better food than what's available in the food courts, when it is available. The underwhelming menu is also very overpriced. A chicken burger for ten dollars... add 2 dollars for some water.... wow what a deal!

very spread out zoo to find small enclosures with not a whole lot in them. maybe 1 animal if you are lucky. half would have none. after getting there and still having to pay for parking? shouldnt this be part of the cost on the ticket to the zoo? Anyways i would call this 2nd worst zoo in the world we have been to. 1st been LA zoo. wouldnt recommend to anyone. Adelaide zoo and western plains and all the cairns zoos are so much better than this.

The Melbourne Zoo is a great experience for young and old. My wife and I first visited back in 2006 when we were uni students. The zoo back then, felt substandard and lacking in terms of attractions and facilities. However, over the last 12 years, the zoo has grown steadily and attractions have been expanded to cater for the larger crowds.

The food is quite pricey and isn't great in portion sizes. That said, visiting the zoo was never for the purpose of food alone.

The zoo is a great day's activity and my wife and I still visit frequently. We have since become zoo members and will be taking our daughter there soon for a visit.

Melbourne Zoo is great for a day out with family or friends. The place was much bigger than I expected--you can easily spend five hours there; we definitely got our money's worth from the trip.

There's tons of animals to see, including lions, tigers, monkeys, and elephants. There's even a reptile house and an aquarium. Rather than list every species there, I'll leave it up to you to check out the official website.

I can't say this is the best zoo I've been to.

i think it is one of the best zoos and you should definitely visit. Sure, the prices are high, but that doesn't matter because you paid for it and that money goes to the sick animals that wouldn't exist if it wasn't for that ticket price. They deserve a life too and complaining about it wont get YOU anywhere, will it? they want safety, and this is the place for it. the staff are SO nice and all the animals are fascinating and beautiful. I obviously recommend. After all, there isn't much they can do about the karens that leave one star ratings . everyone in that zoo deserves more respect.

Get the yearly membership if you go often. Our little one loves coming here and I must admit we adults don't mind it either. You also get admission to the other 2 zoo's in Victoria and other ones interstate like Taronga Zoo in Sydney. Don't go there during school holidays though it can get quite crowded. Well done Melbourne Zoo with your conservation efforts

It was a great experience navigating all by myself to go here from Flinders St. Going there was very easy for me but the hard part crept in when Im already bound to go back to my accomodation as I got lost several times.haha! I dont know what happened to my gps and navigation skills as I found myself in the middle of nowhere as it was just a huge carpark that I am seeing with no human being in sight and yes,I got too paranoid at that time as my fear is slightly making me feel like I have a crippling disease.panic mode on,i know! anyway, for the zoo experience, i find it amusing and entertaining as well at the same time as they have several places and themes to visit. Would love to go back and get lost again.hahahaha once is still not enough.im lovin the feeling of being lost.

We paid a visit to the zoo while down in Melbourne AND it was one of our best days out. Clean zoo or although my partner mentioned the toilets were not hygienic in the males. Staff were friendly and pricing was reasonable we paid $37 per adult. We managed to score some free food being the end of the day and there were alot of fun things to see and do along the way. We noticed alot of recycling drop boxes for old fishing lines, phones and lot of information boards and emails given out to involve you the animal kingdom! I would have given it 5 stars but the day we went alot of the habitats had no animals in it. They also have an awesome Dino Park for the kids! Worth a visit though!

Tickets are valid for a long time. If you have something to do, you can change the date and then go. In addition, if you are buying tickets online, you must remember to save the screenshot of the QR code, otherwise it will take more than an hour to send the ticket to your mailbox.

The ticket has a long valid period. You are able to redeem it in another day.

Melbourne zoo is counted as one among the top zoos in the World! There is a reason for that, it's well laid out, we'll maintained and you get to see and learn about it's inhabitants in their natural habitat. For parents with kids of all ages, for people who love their flora and fauna, it is a must-visit experience. Avoid going on a hot day, in my experience most of the big animals prefer to stay indoors or out of sight.

Take note animals are supposed to be locked up at 4:30 but lazy zookeepers start locking them up at 4:00 so they can go home early. We arrived late as we thought we would have enough time but missed the last half hour which was 30% of our time here. Feel a bit ripped off.

The zoo was awesome, I especially loved how they set things up so you can go into some of the exhibits (like seeing the Lemurs up close).

We visited on Christmas Day and had signed up for the Christmas Day lunch. Food was great and plentiful, lots of drink and cheer, and even some live music to keep us entertained. All around a great day.

I knocked then down a star for a logistical issue that put our party of 3 (which they knew were 3) at a table for 2. We weren't the only ones this happened to and seems like it should have been avoidable. They were able to make things right, but we did really have to squeeze in.
