Used to take the bus or walk here with my family over 40 years ago with my Mom and siblings. Remember when there was only the Lakeside Building; McCormick Hotel and Donnelley Hall. Attended the last CES in the Lakeside building with my children and worked on these properties for over 29 years!

Love coming here for all the different conventions that our great city has to offer.
We came for the annual Chicago Auto Show. We try to make it a family annual outing to see the new car and concept cars that the big manufacturers have to offer... and the little one loves to jump in and out of the different cars as well.
The place is massive and you can tell why the show is held here every year. With all the square footage that the center has and all the massive car manufacturers displays that are put up, you don't feel like it's crammed. There are tons of places to move around.

This year, I loved the Subaru display that included the dogs that were up for adoption. We waited in line for a little while in order to get into the area that the dogs were in and the daughter had a grand time playing with the little puppies available for adoption.

Looking forward to the other things that are scheduled for this year... like Comic Con and other things that come up throughout the year.

Too often the convention center is the only place people see of a city. That would be a shame in Chicago.

My parents took me here as a child and it has had several renovations and expansions. The place is functional but lacks personality. Roads are difficult to navigate too.

This place is a joke. Signs are confusing and wrong and it's crazy spread out with confusing levels. Signs everywhere pointing to food, but everything is closed. How can they have the Starbucks closed during a convention of teachers?! Bathrooms are also ridiculously spread out, poorly marked, and difficult to find with current signs.

This is a very large convention center adjacent to Lake Michigan. It is easily accessible by train, cab or car. It is not very close to the Loop or downtown Chicago. The Hyatt & Marriott Marquis are adjacent hotel that conveniently connect via covered walkways.

Beautiful facility and massive in its size and scope. Great location in a bustling downtown Chicago. Metra train station in the basement near the main entrance. The train took us to the basement of our hotel. Check the Metra schedule ahead of time. Clean facility inside. Lots of security around inside and out.

I visit this place once a year for the Chicago marathon packet pick up. Be prepared to walk a lot. This place is huge. There is easy access to the lakefront path on the east side of McCormick Place.

Convenient Center at its greatest. If you enter through Gate4 you will be near the information desk and coat check areas. Access to the Metra station is inside the building while CTA bus #3 King Drive and the Cermak bus stop is near gate 3. The employees are helpful, great restaurants and hotel experience.

Great location to downtown events and the Chicago River Walk. Also, great restaurants located near this hotel within walking distance. Parking is about $45 per day, but they can accommodate you better if you will be leaving and returning regularly. Front desk staff were kind. I do not suggest the restaurant in the hotel. You can get much better food for less of a cost in an area restaurant.

What a center! Been to several shows here and is always amazing how big it is. Biggest complaint is the food and parking. Food, I am not sure if it is handled by the show or the center but it is always overpriced and there is never a good place to sit. Parking, I hate the ticket machines as they give me problems reading my card.

Huge convention venue. Iconic to downtown Chicago. Something going here nearly every week. Several restaurants in convenience shopping on site. Restaurants are expensive and just average. Not particularly handicapped friendly.

About McCormick Place Rooftop Garden

McCormick Place Rooftop Garden: A Green Oasis in the Heart of Chicago

McCormick Place is a name that resonates with anyone who has ever attended a convention or trade show in Chicago. As the largest and most flexible use convention center in North America, McCormick Place has hosted countless events over the years, from political conventions to auto shows to medical conferences. But what many people don't know is that McCormick Place is also home to one of the city's best-kept secrets: a stunning rooftop garden that offers visitors a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of downtown.

The McCormick Place Rooftop Garden was created as part of an ambitious sustainability initiative launched by the convention center in 2007. The goal was to transform McCormick Place into a model for sustainable urban development, and one of the key components of this effort was the creation of an expansive green roof on top of one of its buildings.

Today, the McCormick Place Rooftop Garden covers more than 2.5 acres and features over 20,000 plants representing more than 100 species native to Illinois. The garden is divided into several distinct areas, each with its own unique character and purpose.

One section features raised beds filled with vegetables and herbs that are used by chefs at McCormick Place's restaurants. Another area showcases native prairie grasses and wildflowers, providing habitat for birds and insects while also helping to manage stormwater runoff.

Visitors can stroll along winding paths through lush gardens filled with colorful blooms or relax on benches overlooking Lake Michigan while taking in stunning views of downtown Chicago's skyline. Interpretive signs throughout the garden provide information about sustainable landscaping practices as well as details about specific plant species.

But perhaps what makes the McCormick Place Rooftop Garden truly special is its role as a living laboratory for sustainable design practices. The garden serves as a testing ground for new technologies such as green roofs, rain gardens, permeable pavement systems, and other innovative approaches to managing stormwater runoff.

In addition to providing an oasis for visitors seeking respite from city life, this green roof also helps reduce energy consumption within McCormick place by insulating against heat loss during winter months while reducing cooling costs during summer months through evapotranspiration processes which cools down surrounding air temperatures naturally without using any energy-intensive equipment like air conditioners or fans.

The rooftop garden has received numerous awards since it opened in 2008 including recognition from Green Roofs For Healthy Cities (GRHC) which named it "Green Roof Project Of The Year" award winner at their annual conference held in Boston back then; it has been featured on national television programs such as PBS' "Growing A Greener World" series; it even made headlines when former President Barack Obama visited during his time at office!

In conclusion,

The McCormick place rooftop garden stands out not only because it provides visitors with breathtaking views but also because it serves as an example for how cities can incorporate sustainable design practices into their infrastructure projects without sacrificing aesthetics or functionality.
It’s no wonder why this hidden gem continues attracting tourists worldwide who want nothing but peace amidst nature’s beauty!
