My second time here. First time was fantastic. This time my friend and I suffered from the disappearing waitress. Mary is clearly over her head. We spent two hours here, didn't get pretzel bread nor did she keep up with hot water refills for tea. Food was very good but it took two and a half hours to eat because of the slow service. Will not be returning!

Marers is probably the best traditional German restaurant I have ever been to. Food is always amazing, staff is always great. They have even accepted that vegetarian diets are a huge thing and provided a couple of options for people under that banner.

The food and the atmosphere were absolutely amazing, I wish I could say the same was for the manager. We waited over an hour for our food to come and then when it did come, the food was room temperature. When we told our waitress about it, she was extremely apologetic and brought the food back in immediately. Soon after, the manager came over was so unpleasant to deal with that it ruined our whole experience.

I visit Mader's once every 10-20 years and am so delighted each time. Like coming home to long lost family. It seems the food quality only gets better over time (or my taste buds have matured!) Wait staff is extremely knowledgeable about the food and it's preparation. Go, eat, and tip well!

I'll start by saying that the overall rating of this restaurant is completely misleading. A few (mostly younger and pretentious) people are dragging down what should be a much higher rating.I lived in Berlin for over 3 1/2 years, and I think I know what German food generally tastes like, and honestly I don't like all of it. The German food I do like was usually pretty good.

This was truly fantastic German food. I travel to Germany regularly and it was just like I was there. The restraint was stated in 1902 and has a fantastic atmosphere and tons of history. I highly recommend it to those traveling through Milwaukee.

Great service at lunch. Huge portions. Waiter could explain all the varieties of the meats we were served. Lots and lots of good options.Atmosphere is intriguing, almost like a museum if you look at everything. Don't miss the hall of fame; it's a fun gallery of photos.

Good service and decor - old school German. Food is expensive for what it is. $30 for schnitzel? We liked some appetizers/entrees, but some (i.e. beets, onion soup, Reuben rolls) were not good. Seems like a tourist destination, low quality, high volume.

Proximity to the Milwaukee Christkindal Market was the unexpected signal to enjoy lunch at Mader's. After walking around in the cool fall weather we enjoyed a warm meal served by their friendly staff . The schnitzel sandwich is recommended, a decent portion of schnitzel on a pretzel bun with German potato salad. Delicious. Beer and lunch suggestions hit the spot with varied local brews on tap. We've been here before for dinner (excellent) and now consider this a go-to location for lunch when in the Milwaukee downtown area for old world atmosphere and German focused food.

Great food, better people. I've been going to Mader's for lunch almost every Friday for the past year and couldn't be more satisfied with the experience. The staff and management make everybody feel like family - from the first-time diner to 20-year regulars Dick and Bill. I highly suggest this place, and encourage you to come for lunch on a Friday to meet Dick, Bill, Gary and the rest of the Mader's gang.

I wanted to have lunch there for the first time today hoping to get some schnitzel, but unfortunately I never got the chance. I stood in the lobby for several minutes looking at the steins, big chair, and all of the decorations. I grabbed a menu from the podium and read through it. I finally decide maybe I was supposed to seat myself so I found a table near the bar and waited. I waited no less than ten minutes, and I know because I listened to three songs, and nobody ever acknowledged I was there. Servers walked past me several times and I even made eye contact with them. I eventually decided to just get up and leave and go get a slice of pizza instead. It's sad because I really wanted to try the place before leaving town.

Pictures aren t going to do the pork shank it s dues. The pork is succulent, delicate and all around delicious. The sweet red cabbage plays beautifully with the rich pork. The atmosphere makes me feel like like I m in the 1900 s and I rode up in a horse and carriage (it s a good thing). If you re a local and haven t been here, shame on you. If you re from out of town, make this your top priority stop.

This is a must? If you are somewhat close to Milwaukee, or even as I do, drive up from Chicago, I never hesitate to take my family to Mader's. The food is authentic, the atmosphere is a classic. Take in the pictures on the wall. US Presidents, celebrities, musicians, comedians, etc.. many have spent time at Mader's.

Very nice place to eat dinner at. It's nice change from regular restaurants. Food was great, served in a timely manner and our server was nice. We didn't really know the german names of the drinks and the food and she explained it to us patiently, recommending which ones are good. This place has lots of history too, you'll read them on the walls when you go to the bathroom. Interesting things to know. This place has also been visited by many celebrities which you'll see a list of when you go in. I'd keep going back here for nice dinners if I had the money!

An absolutely magnificent meal. All the food we tasted was delicious. Portions are generous, but please take my advice and save room for dessert. The strudel is served warm, it s crisp and without question the best I have ever had. The atmosphere is perfect; spend some time walking around the dining areas and you ll see it s like a museum. Service by a young woman named Nathalie was fantastic. She was knowledgeable, helpful, friendly, and efficient. Prices are extremely reasonable considering the quality. There is no doubt that Mader s will be a regular stop every time we visit Milwaukee.

We were in Milwaukee for a conference and after the Roadfood reviews, chose to go to Mader's for a group dinner. As the planned number in our party swelled from the typical 20+ to over 40, the restaurant staff got in touch with me and we worked out to have a private room and their German buffet. The staff was incredibly helpful and accommodating, as we adjusted on the fly about ordering pitchers of beer for the group. We also had need of a cake to celebrate one of our group getting a major field award, and the person coordinating went out and got an inscribed sheet cake for us. At the end, everyone was asking me how I had organized this, but it was a great fun place, with a professional and very helpful staff.

We came from out of state by train and visited with family and went to Mader Restaurant for the first time. I have to say I was very impressed with the whole experience from the Valet Parking to the Hostess and our Great Waitress ( I don t remember her name . The food was excellent and the deserts ( Brandy Alexander ) mouth watering. Definitely gets a High Five from us.

The food wasn t bad, unhealthy for sure. The Pretzel bun was greasy on my grilled chicken sandwich. The reason I m giving this place is because of the service was the worst I ve experienced ever. Our waiter was slow, made mistakes on our bill, made really stupid statements like, Can I start you off with an appetizer or entree. When we finished our meal it took 20 minutes to get our bill sorted out. Just awful, will not be going back.

Our server was far from " spot on" rude...getting her to.serve us was ridiculous as we had to flag her down to take our order. Food was PERFECT. I ordered the Reuben rolls with a side order of german potato salad and a dumpling.

Wow! What a let down. After reading the reviews, we ventured to Milwaukee for some German food. We arrived and ordered a few appetizers and drinks. Messed up on one and didn't bring out two until the rest were ready for refills. Ordered our meals. The food arrived almost complete. The Wiener Schnitzel was greasy and luke warm, the Goulash was dry (too much time under the heat lamps), the Beef and Mushroom Strudel was also luke warm.
For the money, it was a poor value.
Maybe it use to be good but that is no longer the case. There are many better options nearby.
I like good German food and this is not good!
