King Alfred pub Review

Five of us had a great lunch this week in this pub. Great choice on the menu and well cooked.

A most excellent watering hole with amazing staff and excellent service the drinks are alright too.. The garden is. Good. Although the rules seem a little strict...

Excellent Gastro Pub/Hotel with fantastic staff, great quality food and warm atmosphere.

The pub itself has very cosy, friendly atmosphere. The menu was wonderful British pub food, but of a very high standard. The pie was made nearby and was excellent.

The rooms are very cosy, warm and very clean. Wonderful comfortable bed and good tasteful furnishings. Complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits are in the room.

The only drawback was breakfast: Only a light continental breakfast is available in the room which did look good. A discount voucher is available at another nearby pub if you want a cooked breakfast, which unfortunately was closed when I went there.

But never mind breakfast, I will definitely stay at the King Alfred next time I'm in Winchester!

Inviting pub set in an historic location.Great beers and food.

We booked a table at the restaurant for our party of 4 adults and 2 kids on Boxing Day, and I loved it.
Next time though I'll might leave the grandparents and the kids behind
I ordered the Pumpkin and parmesan ravioli and it was delish. Maybe avoid if you don't like olive oil though.
The atmosphere was very friendly and busy, but we didn't wait long to place orders. I think the food came after abt 35 mins.
Would highly recommend, book ahead to be guaranteed a seat though.

Friendly, characterful pub with a nice garden, does good food and good ales and cider! Also allows dogs.

Second time to this beautiful pub. Love the decor and friendly staff with a smile. Great grub as well, defiantly swing past. We also stayed the night, do that as well.

Stayed here last October and have just booked to go again. I had a lovely, clean, comfortable room. The staff were more than helpful. I enjoyed a great dinner and breakfast. Also, perfectly located for all Winchester attractions. Looking forward to my next visit.

Love the new look, a cosy place for a drink in Winchester. And to address Keith McNulty's complaint, their other pub with 5 TV's is only a 5 minute walk from this one... still in the Hyde community. No idea why the thought of such a trek warranted a 1 star review. Anyway, I like a TV-less pub, far more social. And if you're after a little sport, try the billiards table!

Great pub hidden away in the outskirts of the city centre. Well worth a drink here and others within the pub group

Probably best family friendly pub in Winchester. Large player area for children, plenty of toys available inside. Decent menu, ok beer selection and friendly staff

Popped into the Alfred for lunch but couldn't bear to sit on the smelly old furniture any longer than 10 minutes. Ancient musty stained sofas and armchairs. Is this a fashion statement?

A nice well presented pub which seemed very busy. The food was good but the wait was long however this was okay as we were a large group (11) and had a lot to talk about. There was one extremely bad thing about this pub which to be honest really disappointed me, there is no meat pie on the menu - only a vegetarian one! Yes you read that right no meat pie!

Excellent room and facilities, quiet location yet within walking distance of the centre. Friendly and helpful staff, will stay there again.

The room was lovely, it came with lots of little amenities such as a non-cooked breakfast we could eat in bed even though the building itself was quite old it had a lovely charm to it and all of the modern luxuries you'd expect, power shower, heated towel rack, TV, mini fridge and more.

Unfortunately that's where the good part of this review ends, if I was only reviewing the room it would get 5 stars, however, I also are there as the food was included in the price, while it wasn't the worst food in the world, no single element was cooked particularly well, and the order didn't come with some of the sides which had to be re-requested.

The staff when we first arrived were lovely but by time it came to dinner the shifts had swapped and we were greeted by some truly terrible manners and service.

Overall while I do complain about certain aspects, it's still worth the visit, especially for the price.

Too bad the kitchen is not up to the frame and that the place is eccentric but the pub is typical and large inside with a huge shaded garden ....

Superb pub, traditional, well decorated and decent beer

I have stayed here a couple of times and never been disappointed. If you intend to visit Winchester, this is where you need to stay. Polite, friendly staff and locals. Great rooms, brilliant breakfast, don't bother looking elsewhere, this is the jewel in the crown

Ideal place to stay if visiting Winchester. Only 10 min walk to Cathedral. Cosy, clean and tidy. Good evening menu tho only continental breakfast but the corner house, which you pass on the wat into town, does a good breakfast.

We chose King Alfred as it's a family friendly pub (having 2 young kids). The pub is located under a 10 min walk away from the town centre, It has an outdoor play area which unfortunately was cordoned off on our visit 08/04/17. Nonetheless the garden is nice and the beer was good. Service was polite and helpful.

The new owners have taken away ALL televisions. Now I have no reason to go to what was once a local I was proud of. I always went to watch a game and my family would often join to have dinner. We spoke to the owner and she told us to go to her other pub which had FIVE TVs. Can't they just move one of them into this pub? Very disappointed with that response, as this is part of our local community and sport was a reason to gather together. They have taken that reason away!

A local business, focal centre of our community and trying to get back on its feet after this terrible pandemic. Huge praise for the landlord for the warm welcome we received in these socially distanced times! Good luck all!

Great burger! The staff were very nice and friendly. The pub has a really nice atmosphere and nice garden too. They even have barroom billiards!!

Easily the worst pub we've found in Winchester. Walked in and the barmaid (the shorter, blonde (ish) one) didn't move from the laptop until we approached her. Then when back at the bar, was served after all the locals ordered their individual pints, even though she'd seen I'd waited longest. Very rude.

being a vegetarian i had a veg burger there with a diet coke and it was good.
enjoyed a beautiful evening with very good company at a calm and composed place.

surely a nice place to checkout with your friends and colleagues.

Great hidden gem in Winchester, perfect garden for enjoying some food and a drink. We hired out the BBQ, great service.

Had great Artisan Bread Rolls as a starter, vibrant atmosphere.

Came here for a Friday lunchtime meal. A nice Lady seated us and was lovely throughout the meal. The waiter was nice but did not know how much certain drinks costed when asked, and did not offer to find out. He was also confusing about offering a jug of sparkling water.

The food was very nice, I had southern fried chicken burger - maybe slightly overcooked but the taste was good with a sweet chili relish.

The pub has a really cosy interior with interesting decor, and is dog friendly - the lady even offered my dog a treat.

Overall a very pleasant experience. Would recommend. :)

We always get excellent service and food at the King Alfred. They have a very decent selection of reasonably priced local ales, and the food is quite good too. You'll find the usual English pub fare, but they'll quite often have dishes that are completely unexpected in a pub and a very welcome addition to the menu. I particularly enjoyed their scallops and black pudding and merguez sausages over couscous. The food isn't super cheap, but this isn't a spoons. I'm glad to have a local like the King Alfred.

Great service, food very good. Only two things that would have made the experience better would have been a larger plate to accommodate the amount of food and better lighting.

Always been a great pub with great beer, sadly lacking this time. Only Greene King offerings. Service was good mind. But the bar billiards table gets 2 stars on its own.

Not the best for vegans. Ordered the vegan option, but it wasn't vegan. To be fair it was then replaced with what was said to definitely be a vegan option and the staff/manager was nice about it. No vegan wine either.

We went to Winchester for the fireworks and booked a room here overnight. Fantastic hospitality, the staff were so friendly and polite . The room was lovely and clean. We will book here again next time we are down. Highly recommended.
