We always get excellent service and food at the King Alfred. They have a very decent selection of reasonably priced local ales, and the food is quite good too. You'll find the usual English pub fare, but they'll quite often have dishes that are completely unexpected in a pub and a very welcome addition to the menu. I particularly enjoyed their scallops and black pudding and merguez sausages over couscous. The food isn't super cheap, but this isn't a spoons. I'm glad to have a local like the King Alfred.
