Antiquated ticket system has to be one of the most exemplary examples of people hanging on to ridiculous and impractical systems simply for tradition s sake. It s crude and time consuming and heaven forbid you misplace your ticket, boy do they lose their marbles! They have no policy for what happens if someone drops a ticket which would be near impossible to find with all the sawdust and muck on the floors. In fact, they assume you have ill will. Most places will just give you another receipt / order ticket after looking at your food to ensure they ring you up properly. No, not this place. Here, they make you turn out your pockets, search through your bag, and they check security tapes. All for two damned pastrami rye sandwiches that were grossly overpriced and normal in taste. Seriously, don t waste your money and patronize here, there is no point. Katz s is solely reliant on name recognition and ethnic stereotyping not quality of food or service.

what normally makes me bow to the master of pastrami has become inconsistent. katz's is a long time institution of hand carved smoked meats. and what fun it is to scurry about getting your sandwich from one line and your doctor browns' and pickles from another line. the craziness may be overwhelming for newbies. go with a veteran and do what they do. the meat was dry last time. help!

This is the original 1888 historical essence of the New York Jewish deli experience - on steroids. A trip to NYC is not complete without a stop at Katz s.

We had a beer, a wine & a Dr Brown s cream soda, shared a pastrami on rye, French Fries, coleslaw (the best, with just the right amount of horseradish) and a plate of pickles. $70 with the tip... as we oppteded for table service -Note: we shared the sandwich & it was more than enough!

We sat less than 10-feet from where Harry met Sally for lunch. I hope you have what she had.

A must visit!!! 6 stars can I give 6 stars? I mean are you going to have the best pastrami ever yes! Did I hear angels' voices singing in perfect harmony as I was sinking my teeth into the sandwich, absolutely! 2 things- a) don't lose the ticket that's your bill and b) tip the cutter he just open a door to heaven for you, it's the least you can do. Have a look at the Reuben...

An icon of an establishment in Manhattan, this place is not to be missed. Everything we tried; Reuben sandwich, matzo ball soup, frankfurter, and potato latkes were superb. The place has a bit of an attitude, it is excellent, and they are well aware of the fact. The deli gets crazy busy, so don't be surprised if there is a line outside to get in the front door.

This is our go-to place for pastrami sandwich! We go here every time we are in New York. This past time, there was no line, no wait, so we are just in and out. The consistency has been the same every time. We ordered a pastrami sandwich and an extra 1/2 pound of pastrami on the side with some pickled tomatoes. This was enough for two of us. We saw a lot of people who ordered one sandwich each and they couldn t finish them. Highly recommend this place!

Hands down the best pastrami sando I have ever had. We go every time we are in NYC. It s worth the $20+ for the sando and matzo ball soup, get a beer or a soda, and wait in line. It s worth it.

The perfect example of a NYC Delicatessen cafe. This has been a go to place for the best of charcuterie for my family since I first visited NY. I can never go wrong with what I order. I isually have rye bread with the Ox Tongue. But I also go for the best Roast Beef in the city and the equally delicious Pastrami. Their pickles are awesome and come in two varieties. Did I tell you that the portions are good for a family? Well the sandwiches taste even better the next morning.

Super giant sanndwiches that are hand cut.It is expensive.Pastrami sandwich over $25 but sometimes you need that special fix after coming here for 60 years .Great food and historical. If you come to New York this is a must place to see and eat..If in NYC a must place to go.

In the past, I would have given it 5 stars. When I lived in NYC, I went there often. I recently went there and stood in a line for 20 minutes and was told to stand in another line. Then stood in that line for 10 minutes and told the same thing. It's good, but not worth all that BS so I left. I'll probably never go back.

You can't go wrong. This place is a legand. Been coming here since I was just going into high school. The sandwiches are godly obviously but let's not leave out the best knishes you'll every have our the most perfect sir pickles anywhere or the most amazing matzoball soup you'll find anywhere... Just my opinion lol...

Overrated and overpriced! Thought we would enjoy a top rated deli during our short visit to New York and we were seriously disappointed! Yes, the sandwiches were large and looked fresh but the taste and size were certainly not worth the price of almost $30 for a sandwich! The meat in the roast beef was cooked rare to med-rare which was great but it was not quality; it was chewy, dry and flavorless. Unfortunately, the pickles were the best part of the meal and that is most definitely not worth $30! Be forewarned!

While in NYC you have to do some touristy stuff. This should be on the list. It was awesome. They run like a machine. We were seated after about 15 minutes and had our food not long after. We got the famous pastrami sandwich, fries, and a chili dog (randomly). All were great. The servers, despite being swamped, are friendlier than most restaurants on a slow day. Worth the wait and Uber to get there.

I always take my family and friends from out of town here so they can see and taste a good traditional sandwich in New York. The decor and personality of this place is a good representation of a slice of New York.
If you are looking for a place to experience New York, this is the place!
You must try the chocolate milk, that goes my another name, I will let you figure that one out... ;-)
Take lots of pictures to preserve the memories.

Was great the first time but on second thought the ordering and pay system is just awful and Antiquated. Half of Staff is rude and food is overpriced for being mediocre at best. Skip this one. Bring back Carnegie NYC!

Being in this place is iconic food is amazing and you feel like you are back in the 1970's somewhere food is a bit pricey for a sandwich but worth it thats why i just go once a year from NJ, besides sitting where Sally met Harry movie is like being her haha. Every time i visit there i sit across from my husband making him belive iam going to start to do like Sally in the movie and he gets nervous and gives me a look like dont you dare!. Ha love it

Katz is one of those places that the food and experience, to an extent matches the hype. As it relates to the quality of the food, 5/5. The meat was always fresh, well seasoned and the meals leave you feeling full and satisfied.

As for the customer service, the workers preparing the sandwiches and other dishes were professional and cool under pressure. Despite constant request and chaos from it being a tourist hot spot, in my experience over Labor Day weekend, they did their job with skill and professionalism.

The hostess, and other support staff directing traffic when entering the restaurant, not so much. Rude, loud and not very good at communicating. A sense of arrogance and talking down to customers unfamiliar with the process of ordering, seating, and payment.

Not much for sanitization options for customers aside from limited bathroom options.

I'd recommend going when it first opens or doing carry out, as the dine-in experience doesn't enhance the experience all that much.

This has been a fixture in a somewhat down-at-heel area of Manhattan for many years. The area has now become very trendy, so Katz's looks a bit old-fashioned compared with the surrounding eateries, but don't let this put you off! Excellent old-fashioned food and service.

What a place! Service was super friendly, the food was out of hand, seriously good . I orderd a philly and my boyfriend ordered a Ruben it was everything we accepted and more. Really delicious, nothing else to say but that. We re coming back on our next trip to the city

Amazing!!!! If the line is outside and down the building, do not be fooled, it moves FAST!!! We waited in line, waited for a table and were done eating within 1.5 hours. While you're waiting you can order a beer and knish from the nice men behind the counter. It's such a cool place to visit. Highly recommend!

You just have to try the turkey. Share one sandwich on turkey that melts the rye bread and you're in deli-heaven. It's worth the wait in line. If the reader managed to keep his ticket, I'd buy him a sandwich.

Mmmmmm matzo ball soup! That's what I usually stop by here for, since I'm not big on deli meats. However, everyone I've gone with who's gotten a sandwich has been pretty pleased. Yes, it's not super cheap, but the sandwiches are huge. Unless you have a super-sized appetite, you'll have about half of it to take home and eat the next day.

The biggest downside? The service can be kind of gruff, because the way the restaurant is set up is, to be honest, kind of confusing. When you walk in, to the right there is a grill that serves soups, burgers and hot dogs. Right past that are the lines for sandwiches. Each person working in the sandwich section has their own line, so you don't need to form one line. There's also a section for drinks and another for deserts. I could be skipping something, as well.

Although their website says they accept cards, I've yet to figure out where, because the main register at the front is cash only.

Oh, and the chocolate cake is tasty, too.

This place is the reason that delis were invented. I had the Reuben, and it was the best o have EVER HAD. How could you live in the vicinity of this place and not eat here every day? Nothing compares to their culinary skill !!

I try to stop by here every time I m in New York. I honestly in love with the quality of the meat, selection of soups and size of those portions. It seems to be a bit pricy, but only if you decide to go for a full portion in one time, otherwise it s very reasonable for the experience. They also have half size portions. It s iconic, it s a must to visit. It s spacious and from the moment you get a food until you finish it, it s a seamless joy with lots of things to see or order. It could be food or global sausages delivery as a gift. Very nice! Let the history last forever.

Katz is pretty overrated, in my honest opinion. The line is insane so be prepared to wait in a small crowded corner until you are called, if you d like to sit down. The sandwich is piled with meat and was very filling, but the price tag was too high for what you get. The decor was fun to see as well as the atmosphere, but I was let down and expected more.

Katz s is a popular restaurant in NY they always have a line to get into the restaurant and is totally worth it to wait. When I went I waited about 20 minutes to get in. When I got inside the wait was longer for the food than what I wait outside. I guess cause to many people ordering at the same time. The restaurant always packs and by the entrance the waiter give you a ticket, but make sure you don t lose that ticket if not they will charge a fee at the end. They have a good Pastrami sandwich and they are not cheap with slides of Pastrami. Their mustard sauce was good too. Is cash only!

Have been here before and have never been disappointed. Yes it is touristy with a premium because of it but you will have a hard time finding better deli food anywhere else. It always seems to be crowded. We chose table service this time which we have not done in the past. The waiter seemed a little disorganized and it took a while for us to get our meal after we ordered. The waiter blamed it on the cook staff for all intents and purposes. We paid by credit and it took him a while to come back with our receipt after we gave him our credit card. If you have enough time during your visit to NY, make it a point to come here. If you live in NY, Katz's is part of the NY deli experience that is slowly dying unfortunately.

Oh...My...Goodness... you absolutely have to try this place. Actually, you should fly to New York just so you can try this place! Here in California we've got amazing pastrami sandwiches from a plethora of restaurants from Togo's to your local neighborhood Deli. Throw all those ones in the trash. They will never end their life of lives compare to the amazing pastrami they serve at Katz's Delicatessen. Ask them for a sample before you order, they will carve off a small Slice of Heaven. And once that delicious pastrami hits your tongue, your eyes will get big and your mouth will start to water. Trust me on this. You'll thank me later!

The trip to Katz s deli is definitely worth the while due to the amazing food, atmosphere, and service. Our waiter cracked us up when ever he came by to check on us, making the overall experience great.

Delicious! The've been open for so long that they've clearly perfected their pastrami on rye. Service was fast, food was incredible and seating was plentifully, if not just the basics. I left with a happy stomach and have not stopped thinking about them since. I will definitely be back!

Tasty reuben with pastrami sandwich.

Tasty reuben with pastrami sandwich.
The meat was succulent with good flavour.
Pickles were quite salty. Good mustard.
One sandwich is definitely enough for two people.
I totally understand its an institution but the prices are sky high and totally outrageous.
They lost one star as a single sandwich was 26.45USD with tax.
Seating = sardines
Definitely worth a visit for the experience.
