Ian's is one of those Madison staples. They have a lot of delicious and unique combinations for pizza, and offer build-your-own salads as well. One great thing about them is they make an effort to obtain locally sourced ingredients, and this positive community contribution shows in flavor and freshness. The establishment, while on the large side for a State Street business, is almost always packed, and with good reason. First of all, it's pizza... enough said there. But it's actually quick; when you enter the restaurant, you'll to the left to enter the ordering area, where you walk past all the currently available pizza options (not all combinations are available all the time, but include options with everything from tater-tot and brisket to macaroni and cheese to kale-sweet potato-gorgonzola cheese), pick your slice(s), and move left toward the dining room where there's a short wait (usually a few minutes)to get your hot food and go select a table.
One of my absolute favorite casual dining options in Madison.

This cozy pizza restaurant is about 1 block from the capitol and is located on state street a diverse street with plenty to do. The pizza here is amazing! My personal favorite is their Mac and Cheese pizza. They also have a very good salad bar. They re open late which is nice and will have special events sometimes. Depending on the day and time the lines can be a bit long but it s always worth it.

I live about 25 hours from this location and yet I love this restaurant. With complete honesty I can say that Ian's Pizza is my favorite place to eat and I got really excited about getting to eat it again. My favorite choices were the chicken pot pie and the macaroni and cheese pizza.

Great variety of pizza by the slice. The salads look great too, but once I see & smell the pizza, i can't convince myself to try one. My favorite is the Mac & Cheese pizza. Cool atmosphere, and seems like the staff is well taken care of by the owners, and it shows in the great customer service I've received multiple times.

If you're in Madison, go here. Great pizza (and salad!), funky/funny options (in addition to the standards), fast, cheap, friendly, good to their employees, cares about the city and the world. A stone's throw from the capital building and a nice walk down State St.

Definitely a Madison experience to have. I tried the classic mac n cheese, and the seasonal Italian beef. Both were really good. Not the best pizza I've ever had, but if you are interested in experiencing familiar flavor combinations (like taco, chili cheese fries, crab rangoon etc.) not normally seen on pizza in addition to your classics, Ian's is the place to go.

A Madison staple on State that tastes like NYC. $13.50 for a 16" cheese. I mean c'mon. Tons of high quality toppings to choose from. Home made puppy chow. Try to avoid the after bar rush unless that's your thing.

Call me a crazy man, but I just can't get enough of their plain cheese pizza and bread sticks with marinara. They nail the basics. The pizza is nice and thin, with a great savory crust. The bread sticks have just the right oil to bread ratio. It's a good time, for sure. One of the few lunch places near my work that I crave when I'm not at work :)

Friendly staff, convenient and attractive location, but the pizza is just ok. Bread sticks are pretty good, the ranch dressing is very tasty and I love that they have Sprecher cream soda in the fountain, but the main event is pretty meh. The cheese congeals and turns clear.

The pizza was solid yummy. With some great alternatives to the standard fair. The people were friendly, and prices were reasonable. I would go back and recommend it. Bit I won't be having about it. ay. I grabbed the wrong slices.

Have been here many times over the years and always interesting pies! Good for a quick bite of you're in the neighborhood and for work gatherings. I'm personally not crazy about their salads, but it's not called Ian's Salads.
Several options for vegans as well.

Worth the hype! Awesome location next to the Capitol, and the mac and cheese pizza is unbelievable. Not normally one to go for breadsticks, but theirs with the pepper ranch could be a meal on their own. Incredible! Good old-school music vibe, too. We had a cashier randomly start complaining to us about patrons he didn't like, which was awkward and kind of uncalled for, but other than that, an awesome experience!

Great, easy-to-find location with a fun, lively vibe. The pizza has okay flavor, but isn't anything special in my opinion. Not sure what the hype is all about. They offer various pizzas available for purchase by the slice, but none of them are labeled, which is frustrating. Several of the employees who work here have a loud, odd, dirty-looking style with lots of piercings, tattoos, and weird makeup that doesnt present as a clean look and makes me wary of them handling my food, especially since they don't wear hair nets or gloves. I like that they offer Coke and Pepsi products here, but don't like the fact I have to wait in line to ask an employee for a lid and straw for my soda.

Serving slices of hot garbage, you're sure to find exactly the right thing to throw up on the sidewalk later. Avoid this dump like the plague.

Response to owner comment:

Start from scratch. Toss the recipes and begin anew. If people eat your pizza and leave crusts on their plates (everyone does at Ian's) it's because the foundation of your pizza (the crust) is wretched. Toppings like the sausage you use are bland and unappealing and things like noodles atop crust are pure WTF pandering to juvenile tastes. I think it'll be hard for Ian's to redeem itself while remaining Ian's.

Some would say its overrated, but the large selection of slices you can get here is phenomenal. Obviously don't go here if your not a huge fan of pizza, but even so the simpler slices like cheese or pepperoni are still much better than other pizza delivery places imo.

We went here for dinner. It was chaotically ordered. This place is very strange in that you order from the front and pick out your pizza by the slice. The pizza selection was poor, there were flies going on the breadsticks. The pizza slices were then heated up and yet were amazingly still served cold....the pizza and salad were horrible as well. The salad with a "medium" amount of dressing wasn't even visible.......would not recommend

Always friendly, always fresh and most importantly always delicious! Don t skip on the salad bar if you re in the mood - it s fresh and local!! Ask about weekly specials for pizza flavors. Purchase a fountain soda because the cream soda is good. Also, try a side of marinara - it s got a little kick. If you need something sweet for after your meal grab some of the puppy chow - a part of the price is donated to The Dane County Human Society.

I would compare this to my favorite pizza joints in NYC. I even folded it to eat it ;-). The crust was light, chewy and crispy at the same time. The sauce was just a bit sharper than I'm used to, but still pretty good. The cheese melted on top was chewy and near perfection.

We came back to eat it again the next day for breakfast. Sick!

average at best. stale rubbery slices sitting under counter reheated. :/ meh. nothin beats fresh made quality ingredients. Whole Foods vastly surpasses. there are even natural frozen pizza brands now that do better. but fun idea.

Best pizza around! Didn't have time to take a picture, I ate it too fast. Also eco conscious as they don't do straws and have signs up about not using plastic lids. They care about more than just their business. And thats how a business grows.

We tried the smokey and the bandit, delicious pizza, wished we could have tried more but we will save it for next visit. Unfortunately they were out of ice and 2 of the soda selections were empty.

Upon arrival at this eating establishment you are greeted by the lovely cashier. You pick out the slice or whole pizza you'd like. We ordered 2 slices of pepperoni pizza and grabbed a seat. The flow of people is steady as we wait. Minutes go by and we are still waiting for 2 slices of pizza. Others come and go before we get served. They forgot about our pizza and gave us one free soda and 3 free bread sticks. Not that bad right? Overall for a quick bite it's good for what it is.

I have only been here a few times but their pizza is delicious! For many locations, the mac & cheese pizza is very hard to nail, however, Ian s pizza makes some delicious macaroni and cheese pizza! This is a really cool place with creative pizzas and I highly recommend it if you are nearby!!!
