Everything perfect .. fast, polite with humor and updated staff, nice flavors in what we tasted .... sweet I would have liked something more, but it was pleasant and did not host me .... the place perfect, well-known. joy....

The atmosphere in the lobby is what hotels should strive for: buzzing and lively, but classy. The decor is also beautiful, but classical.

However, staying here was an altogether different experience.

Firstly, the front desk staff decided to take a condescending tone when I did not understand his (incorrect) English. First strike. But the bellboy who accompanied us to our room with luggage and introducing the features was excellent, partly making up for this.

Second strike was when we tried to turn on the TV: it, along with the mini fridge, was not plugged in. God knows when the last time my room was used and checked! Needless to say, nothing in the fridge was cold.

The last straw was also the most serious. There was a wedding party in the basement ballroom that night, and the music was reverberating through the whole hotel, up to level 5 and even 6! We were on L4, and the music was so loud and distinct that we could not sleep until it ended, at 4am.
I went down to the front desk at 2am to complain, and the staff simply waved it off saying "it's a wedding party, what can I do?" I insisted, and eventually he said that he would go ask if they could turn it down. Which obviously they did not. I suspect he did not actually ask, just said that he would in order to get rid of me.

Needless to say, I will not be recommending this hotel to anyone.

If you are looking for a central hotel with history, grandeur and outstanding service, this hotel is for you.

We stayed for 3 nights and the location. Was great. Literally 15 to 20 minutes walk to everything downtown Athens has to offer, from sightseeing to restaurants to public transit.

The hotel itself is a reminiscent of a disappearing era of grandeur and over the top elegance . The service is efficient and friendly. Shout out to George @ the front office. Greeted me by name every time I saw him, and I think he works there 24/7 :-)
Thank you for your warm hospitality.

Our experiences with the concierge, bell desk, room attendants and room service were all very friendly and helpful.

The courtyard room we had was cozy and functional with a nice practical bathroom. The bed was comfortable with crisp luxurious linens.

The outdoor pool on the 7th floor is compact and picturesque.

This hotel is highly recommended.

My wife and I stayed at the Grande Bretagne earlier this month as part of our honeymoon. We had a very nice stay, in large part to the service we received from the staff. The brightest star of the property is Katarina, a server at Alexander's bar. Our first night we had cocktails and a light dinner and were fortunate enough to sit in Katarina's section. She provided us with professional service and a truly personal experience. We enjoyed our evening so much, that we made sure to visit Katrina again on our last night.

Obviously the hotel is a beautiful property with excellent amenities, but the number one reason my wife and I will make the 11hr flight to Athens again and will stay at The Grande Bretagne is Katarina.

Disappointed with this hotel. Upon arrival the reception staff were not very welcoming. The room smelt of stale smoke and it is well overdue a facelift for the 650euros+ you pay a night. It was all a bit depressing really.

This hotel doesn't add to your experience when visiting Athens, nor is it reflective of the Athens I know and love. I had much better experiences at New Hotel and Athens Was (attentive, kind and helpful staff, decent locations and more reasonable prices). Unlike the Grande Bretagne, they don't rely on their former glories to attract customers.

What about the "best hotel in Athens"

What about the "best hotel in Athens"
Who has a beautiful building, it is beautifully situated and rooms are clean! Yes ... but then what about table service at all levels! restaurants and bars that are unworthy of this establishment or the room on the top floor just out of a film of the 70s.
Yes but there is no competition at this level and this is the problem! ...

One of the finest places for comfortable high end service and exceptionally well equipped, no request is unacceptable and every demand is met. Beautiful decor and exquisite service. One of my favourite venues in the centre of Athens.

The hotel was founded in 1866 by the Savvas Center, originally from Epirus and was initially installed in a building on Stadiou and Karagiorgi streets in Serbia. In 1875 the hotel business was relocated to the Antonis Dimitriou mansion which was built in 1842 and in which it is housed until today. In 1878 Efstathios Lampsas joined the shareholding scheme.
In 1888 the hotel was one of the first buildings in Athens to be electrified.
During the first days of December, the hotel served as the headquarters of the Prime Minister, the Council of Ministers and the British General. Later for security reasons the Council of Ministers was transferred to Papandreou's historic villa in Kastri together with the Chief of the City Police. At the end of 1944, EAM planted explosives on the foundations of its hotel, with the aim of blowing it up, killing at the same time Churchill, who was mistakenly thought to have landed there. The operation was canceled due to the intervention of a British patrol.

Jewel.

This was probably once a grand hotel. Now it is a hotel living on its grand reputation. In particular the rooms are tired and internal telephone is intermittent and wifi second rate. Service is spotty, sometimes great but often gruff and condescending. Breakfast is disappointing and bland; but the view of the Acropolis from breakfast is outstanding . The high point is afternoon tea, which is outstanding and posh for real. Stay somewhere else and join the fine ladies for tea.
