Saw a screening of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre here tonight on the second floor theater to the left. Excellent sound quality! Probably the best version of the film I've ever seen; it was incredibly loud, visceral, and intense as hell. Truly a great experience! The sloping pattern of the seat placement makes sure that no one is ever in front of you blocking the screen. The screen is huge and the seats recline back at just the right angle. Comfortable seats and small tables in front for your food and drinks. Get there early for good seating. Been here many, many times. I love the Hollywood Theater. ;)

I can't comment on the new films that they play here, but the flashback movie I saw turned out really well. The projection looked fine and the theater arrangement is what I expected from an older movie house. The two people at the "ticket booth" seemed really flustered even though there wasn't a rush. They didn't know movie times or anything about the movies. Maybe they could help the customers out a little bit buy learning something about what they're selling.

Absolute beautiful theater, a wonderful icon of Portland dating from the 1920's I do believe. Parking is in very short supply, but public trans is like 2 blocks away. Much better option, makes the experience more enjoyable. Mom/Dad got a signed original "2001" record soundtrack album which I now possess. Received it at the movie premier at the Hollywood theater in '68. (( Sorry, L.p. record NOT for sale. ))

I had never been to Ignite Portland and it was hosted by Hollywood Theatre. A great space that wasn't too big or too small. Beer selection was pretty darn amazing too ;) looking forward to going back!

Wonderful historical theatre. Great offerings. And Beer! They also have local offerings like Salt and Straw ice cream and Sizzle Pie pizza. Doesn t get any better. Well, the only down side is that the upper two theatres aren t wheel chair accessible. You might need to call ahead if stairs or a STEEP slope is an issue.

Just a great place overall. You can tell they care as they're always adding new events like Oscar parties and B-Movie Bingo. They just got new, proper theater seating. Very comfy! I heartily recommend!

If this place ever closed, I'd just leave Portland. That's it, the final straw. Forget it.

But yeah, Hollywood is fantastic. Still show 70mm films. Best experience was several years ago seeing Wild at Heart on Valentine's Day- option to purchase a bottle of champagne with a locket that had Nic Cage's face in it. The best.

I like that they've finally put in new chairs. We love going here. We get to see older movies, special flicks, and independent films. They have beer and yummy things to eat. A much better theater experience than regular theaters.

Always a great place to catch a show. 35mm, 70mm (only place in Oregon that can show this format!), indie and doc films. More obscure horror, queer, kung-fu and pop-culture movies than you can shake a stick at - there's something new every weekend! And they regularly bring in special guests, from directors to actors to musicians of the featured film.

We're so lucky to have the Hollywood Theater. They have great programming and you gotta love the building itself. Go for one of the 70mm screenings. It's usually worth it to buy tickets in advance, because showings often sell out.

The Hollywood Theater is a Portland landmark, and one of the many unsung heroes in the fight to preserve classic film, and ultimately, the best possible way to experience watching films. They serve fantastic food, including the local iconic Sizzle Pie pizza, and many fantastic local libations. If you're a fan of video(as in VHS), check out their cousin, Movie Madness!

I was there for the opening night of the Cascade Festival of African Film. The film viewing part was great, but I find the chairs uncomfortable and the rows too close to each other. The floors could use a little TLC.

Magnificent. Stupendous. Majestic, virtually regal (not to be confused with the chain). It has been and is everything which befits the name "Hollywood". A tremendous atmosphere, especially when they have the 70mm specials, which they did just recently showing "2001: A Space Odyssey" and i'm thinking of taking in "Swiss Family Robinson", which I've only seen on TV. The beer, wine and pizza along with other concession items, really round out the bill of fare which you'd expect of a great movie house.

This is what a non multi-plex movie house is supposed to be! The Bagdad blew it, the Laurelhurst followed suit, but the Hollywood Theatre keeps it going.
First run, second run, revivals, festivals, events, curiosities...a film community paradise.

A serious treasure to the Portland community. I'm a big movie buff and these days it is hard to find a theater that is about movies, not just big blockbusters and selling you junk food at a huge mark-up. The Hollywood is a classy venue and they do a great job fostering a community people who just love film.

I'm a member of this iconic Portland theater, and glad to be a supporter of the fine cinema they purvey. I don't think there's really anything bad to say about the Hollywood Theater. They're awesome and great and you should go there a lot and see movies and eat popcorn and drink beer.

Nicely kept up, old movie theater with 1 large auditorium downstairs and 2 smaller screens upstairs.
From what I gather, it's a non-profit and is heavily member funded, but that allows them to do fun side projects like run old classics. We stopped by to see Casablanca on 35mm one Sunday and were surprised to find it sold out well in advance.
My only gripe with this place is parking, which could be said for most of the neighborhood. Either don't drive or plan on an extra 10-15 minutes to find parking.

I absolutely love this theater. It has a great mix of first run, art, and event screenings (including 70mm showings). Admission is shockingly cheap even more so with a membership. Food is also cheap with my usual tab for popcorn, drink and maybe candy being less than a popcorn at a major theater. There is a whole lot to love here.

Historic, gorgeous venue with a great connection to the community. Snacks, drinks, and food offerings are fairly priced and wide.

Seats are older and not quite as comfortable as some modern offerings - so bring a lumbar pillow.

Many classic movies to relive on a gorgeous screen in a classic format.

Beautiful old theater, surprisingly affordable prices on concessions, and there's always B-Movie Bingo the first Tuesday of every month. The only downside is the lack of stadium seating, which is to be expected from an old theater, but it bears mentioning.

This theater is hella old, so keep that in mind.. but their seats are very comfortable. Besides that.. this place is an amazing treat. Sort of my home away from home. You can see so many classic movies here.. without the Hollywood Theater, I would have never gotten the chance to see so many great films in the theater. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Love coming here for their awesome events. You can tell those who own and operate this venue are true Cinema lovers but they also have a good grasp on the demographics of the area. You're just as likely to sit next to a 30-something guy with neck tattoos and curly mustache as you are a 75yo dude in a Mr. Rogers sweater. They offer fun events like B Movie Bingo and 3D showings of classic sci-fis. These people want to put the love of Cinema in everyone's hearts.

The newly renovated Hollywood Theatre is everything more than it was before. If you've been here before it was remodeled, give it another chance, you will surely be impressed on the big changes that have been made!
