Hollywood Theater is easily the cooles theater in the Portland area and always fun to visit. Tonight was no exception. Snacks are cheaper too. I did not bother with the Sizzle Pie pizza though from down the hall since it is always soggy crust.

The Hollywood Theater may just be the best movie theater in the country. No joke. They play a good mix of first run films with a lot of options that are off the beaten path a little. This year I became a member and I have no regrets!

What isn't amazing about the Hollywood theatre?! The staff is great, their theaters are comfortable and air-conditioned, and the movies OH GOD THE MOVIES!!! There's a 70mm projector to delight your inner film geek. Showing an incredible range of current films and older classics, they also have film series focusing on music films, cult classics, b movies so-bad-they're-good, and to top it all of they also run an education and youth outreach program in the public school system.

This is one of the premier movie theatres in the nation and I am honored and proud to be their patron.

Yes, full 5 stars. In my estimation, this is one of the most iconic buildings in the whole of Portland. So many of the old theaters that we all like to visit, are somewhat janky, but charming. Hollywood Theater has been kept up and maintained to a large degree. The pizza is by Sizzle Pie, and the snacks are reasonably priced, and the concession stand has plentiful options regarding beer and cider and wine. Big, beautiful, modern screens and sound system. Please support this locally owned non-profit, or even become a member.

I don't write reviews and find the star rating system woefully inadequate of it's existence. However, after watching Quentin Tarantino's "Once upon a time ... In Hollywood", I am compelled to do just that. This theater is a movie lovers den. I imagine many people might have reasons to see movies elsewhere but, for a true film experience with fellow cinephiles, the difference between a reason and an excuse doesn't cut the mustard. Spend one opening weekend of a Director you love here and you'll be back for more.

Was excited to try this historic theatre! Walked in and line was out the door. Where to buy tickets and where tickets are scanned isn t marked very well. We bought tickets early and returned not knowing if we had to wait in long line again or not. Person at cashier got mad at me when I had to open my purse and grab my ticket stating I have a line here in a rude tone. Went upstairs to where movie was playing and didn t even have the time our movie was playing on the door. A few people were asking other people which theatre it was in because it wasent marked. Never will return. Not very organized.

I was able to attend the roadshow showing of The Hateful Eight in 70 mm at the Hollywood Theatre. I love the old-timey feel, the history, the super friendly staff, and the the reasonably priced concessions and local beers. Since you reserve tickets online, the only thing that would make it better is if you could also reserve your seat in advance. Many other theatres have moved to this system, and it allows you to show up closer to the showtime without needing to scramble to find a seat. (Here, many people "save" their seats and then head out to the concession line.) I recommend getting on the e-mail list, as you'll get a heads up about what's coming, but you'll also get a lot of slightly annoying requests to become a member, which probably isn't such a bad idea if you come here often.

The Hollywood is a Portland treasure. They show the best, if not necessarily the biggest films, as well as a plethora of classic and cult movies. It is a nonprofit that also runs Portland's best video/DVD rental store Movie Madness.

UPDATE 2015: I have grown to love this place even more over the years and after experiencing what it's like to partake in shows being produced, I love them even more. Great space, great food, great people. The remodel of the inner space and the outer sign has really polished their overall and I couldn't be happier.

FIRST REVIEW:
I have not been disappointed by this theater yet. They play interesting films and it's getting me out of my box with what I like to go and see. The prices are great and the food is so much better than your typical cineplex. I only wish they had a little more money to make the interior look more utilized. A lot of empty space upstairs.

Overall, a great place to go hang out with friends and see something interesting and fun! And catch your favorite TV show with 100s of people.

Loved this place so much we became members. Now we get advance notice on special events like special screenings and guests - which helps because Portland is a city full of super fans of just about every genre and niche interest, so this stuff sells out quickly. If you are when a little interested, go for it.

For the rest of y'all, this is still a place worth checking out. It's a beautifully restored movie palace with one large downstairs theater and two smaller upstairs theaters. They show first run, special interest, super obscure, and lovingly preserved movies. There are often special events with Q&A opportunities with the makers.

There are definite quirks that come with an older building (I think only the downstairs theater is fully ADA compliant, and the upstairs bathrooms have fiddly plumbing), but it mostly adds to the charm of the place.

And seriously, the programming can't be beat.
