The best place to currently watch a movie in Portland.
This theater is of a long-gone style called a "film palace" apparently and it feels of that mostly in good ways though the steep ramps to the upper galleries may give unwelcome insight into the state of one's cardio.
A fine place; I have no real reservations.
And they vend beer.
Show up early for the best seats. Come see a film showing here. Especially 70mm! The image is huge and bright with sound at appropriate levels (decently loud!) Leave your cellphone off or in the car, they will remove you. Check the website for parking directions at the nearby medical facility. Not having to find parking in the neighborhood relieves much stress.
Great old time feel, diverse environment, fun and still very affordable.
Love this place on so many levels. The movies, the volunteers/staff, the snacks, the ambiance the entire theater itself is a great experience. Very much the theater of a different era. Even a working pipe organ with bellows in the basement. Check this place out now f u get a chance. Always a great movie selections playing. Not the mainstream or art house norms.
This is my favorite place in Portland. With many monthly events including Kung-Fu theater and a wide variety of limited run movies there is almost always something worth seeing. The concessions are affordable and delicious with a variety of microbrews and a pizza window for slices of Sizzle Pie, directly from the kitchen next door.
I have lived in Portland for decades and have not been very happy with all of the changes that have been happening here. However, the changes that have happened with the Hollywood Theater since it became a nonprofit are the sorts of things that make me still love this city. The programming is innovative, the theater is comfortable, the beer excellent and the vibe is movie nerd friendly. Love this place!
Beautiful restored historic three screen theater showing a variety of current, limited release and vintage films. Good selection of food and beverages available.
A gem of a theater, one of the best on the West Coast. So lucky to have it right here in Portland. Incredible projection, clear, vibrant, rich sound, all of the themed movie nights, the numerous guests such as actors, directors, musicians and more that accompany the films, wrap it all up and you have The Hollywood Theatre.
Not to mention what they do for the arts community, they recently saved one of the biggest film rental stores in the nation from going extinct.
Absolutely incredible and there is a Mini-Holly Theatre at the Portland International Airport in which they showcase independent short films.
A true treasure
Long live The Hollywood Theatre!
I love the place and it's beautifully historic! I would give 5 stars, but they were out of most of what I wanted at the snack bar.
Such a beautiful place! Friendly staff and super comfy chairs.
This theatre is one of the most fun in the city. Great movies great food laugh out loud everyone clapping kind of movie theater. Extremely fun with good beer. Don't miss 're-run theater it's a stone blast.
This is a beautiful theater. Plus $2 candy and $4 beers? Heck yes!
Changing to 4 stars because of the attitude of several staff members. Not responding to "thank you" or "have a good night" is rude. I also once inquired about when tickets were going on sale and was just given attitude. Didn't even attempt to help, just told me he had no idea and got frustrated.
Awesome selection! They always have first time premieres and also curate 70mm showings. The only thing they could use is a cocktail bar!
Incomparable moving picture art community. Unusual films presented at high quality in lovely restored period landmark building
A wonderful, historic place. They show everything you don't find at the homogenized mall octoplex from the H P Lovecraft film festival to grind house, art films, old films and documentaries.
Checked out a documentary here. A nice, old theater. Seems they have a lot of theme nights here, so I will be keeping an eye on this place and coming back sometime soon.
Great local theater. Bring a coat to wad up behind your lower back if you like lumbar support.
Saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood when they showed it in 35mm and I was blown away! Definitely will be coming back.
This beautiful historic movie theatre is bringing 70mm back and they are doing it right. I had an incredible experience seeing The Hateful Eight here, and I'll definitely be back.
Awesome old theater and really good customer service.
The best for classic, retro, and new with showings in digital, 35mm and 70mm. Samurai cinema, grindhouse, b-movie bingo, retro and contemporary. Pizza and beer. Only thing that sucks is the parking.
The best theater, period. They have good keynote speakers at The Ritz, Austin TX and New Beverly Cinema, Los Angeles CA, but nobody comes close to Dan Halsted. He's very enthusiastic before the show and gets you really excited about what you're about to see. Always a great time!
It's historical, it shows films natively in 35mm and 70mm, there's beer, a pizza shop is attached to the inside of the building, and it has current films as well as some cult classics.
The inside ranges from beautiful to drab, as do the seats, and rooms - some are fantastic, and others I'd rather just pass on. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. The prices are more than competitive.
They also provide a movie pass feature, and if you like watching movies in the theater it's worth considering getting a pass here instead of a big chain.
Very comfortable, good sound and pic and cool historic cinema.
Beautiful theater, well maintained. Warm and helpful staff. Nice concessions including beer and wine. Pizza by sizzle pie. Great value. Will definitely return.
My favorite theatre in Portland! Gorgeous building, great screens and sound, and the best popcorn!!! And it's nonprofit!!!
Very nice historic theater with wide screens and comfortable seats. Also a pretty good price for the beautiful venue.
Historical non-profit theatre showing great movies with great beer and good pizza.
What a great venue. Just watched the premier of The Irishman. Great movie. Even better theater. Great food and beer with stupid low prices. Have lived in the Portland Metro area for over twenty five years and can't believe I didn't find this place sooner.
Great old time theater with a modern twist. Staff is helpful and friendly and you can get the usual soda, candy and popcorn. Additionally, they offer craft beer and pizza if you're up for something more filling. The seating is modern and some seating isles have a long, raised table to set your goodies, along with the standard seat cup holders. Lines for treats can get long on weekends, but the staff is fast enough to keep it going at a fair clip. All in all, a great time to be had with more charm and character than average theater fair.
Cute downtown historic theater. Would benefit from more parking available.
I love this theater. Oftentimes they will be playing movies I have never heard of, but due to their reputation, I can trust that whatever they choose to throw on those screens is going to be great. They also have really fun events like B-Movie bingo. The Hollywood district was named after the original theater, and I think this Portland gem deserves that honor.
very interesting and different restaurants but to sit where your favorite stars sat is awesome! lots of homeless though.
One of the great places in Portland, OR. Large theater that can show real live 70mm movies, affordable snacks and beer, and a wonderfully curated slate of movies throughout the year
great decor, it reminded me of our Castro theatre back in SF!
An important institution for all film geeks in Portland. A local treasure!
We saw Hateful Eight in 70mm and more recently, the re-release of 2001 A Space Odyssey. This is a nice old historic theater run by folks passionate about film. You will meet a lot of people here that really love movies and are looking for an experience that's different from the big theater chains. Grab a beer at concessions and enjoy
Great theater for drinks, food, and booze without breaking the bank.
Hollywood Theatre is a fantastic community asset. Congratulations to all the volunteers, employees and patrons for making and maintaining this a beautiful Portland landmark.
Wonderful restored historical theater, a bit worn in spots but lovely nonetheless. I attended the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival here. If I lived in Portland, this would become a regular visiting place for me. The concession stand offers a wide array of fare, including really good pizza from Sizzle Pie. Bonus: the concession prices were reasonable!
Great old style theater. Independent flicks. Atomic pizza. Beer. What more can you ask for?
The historic Hollywood Theatre is a treasure, not just of Portland but for the entire world of film. The love and devotion shown to the theatre itself and the selection of films is outstanding. Special screenings of classics old and new in 70 and 35mm., director and composer events, community building. This gem does it all. Memberships are a great way to support and be able to get early ticket s for special events. I can not recommended this place strongly enough. If you consider yourself a film aficionado you must go to the Hollywood Theatre.
At the Portland horror film festival.
I was drugged that night, fortunately the drink ordered by my wife was for me and not her, so it just ruined my night.
Either the crowd is shady or the staff has a bad apple. Watch you drinks.
Everything about this place is amazing! Fair prices, amazing films. I've seen some of my favorite movies here. Good rotating beer, yummy pizza, comfy seats, and superb equipment. I'm proud to be a member.
Watched "The Shape of Water." Another McMenamin's prize.
Great value with quality film. Beer and buttered popcorn a bonus.
I love you theater! There's so much history here and I absolutely love it. They have 8 great concession stand and it feels good to be able to watch an 8 millimeter film. Makes you nostalgic.
well seasoned selection of movies, sponsor local community events. easy street parking
One of my favorite theaters to go to. I frequently go there.
Always have great films showing, it's really atmospheric, cool, I absolutely love this theater. The staff are always very friendly!
Great staple of old Portland life. Love going for Indy films and some B movie bingo!
Beautiful, historic theater perfect for cinema buffs who enjoy new and classic film experiences.
Great movies but possibly the worst sound in town and awful seats.
Oldest 70mm theater in the country. It is an amazing nonprofit and it cares about its audience
This is my favorite theatre in Portland. Reasonable prices and great programming. You can't beat the experience at this historical location.
Saw the premiere "This is Tim" and had a wonderful evening. Theater was cozy, yet spacious and the upstairs concession and restrooms had no waiting in line.
Saw Once Upon A Time In Hollywood on 35mm, and it was amazing!
Shows films you won't see elsewhere. Community oriented.
I love the Hollywood Theatre! Comfortable seats, great concessions, lovely staff, and a beautiful space. It does get crowded, so plan accordingly to get good parking and beat the lines.
I adore this theater. A great piece of portland history and a fun place to see a movie.
